Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Welcome back Esther! Happy birthday Amanda!

I just use a veggie peeler to make veggie chips or veggie noodles, depending on how I cook them.

Tasha I have a samsung and love it. I used to have an iphone but love my samsung and don't think I would go back. Although my husband is thinking of going back to the iphone bc he prefers itunes over what android offers. I don't listen to much music these days so it doesn't matter to me.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) We have that debate as well, my oldest son has an android, and will not have any Apple products, on the other hand the rest of us have iPhones, I need to upgrade because I need more storage space, and there is no external storage for iPhones, Which is another argument my son has for the Android phones he has a LGG3 and loves it, I'm sticking with the iPhone because it is user-friendly, at least for me ;-)

Husband needs a good app it sounds like. My standard media player is crap but luckily there is an app for everything these days.

CFDeeDee I loved apple way before iPhone came out .. I always wanted a mac book ..
But when it comes to phones, iPhone is much more secured and got no viruses .. It only depends on what you prefer !

Today I'm having a lovely evening at some relative's house .. Food here I come :P

Oh, you must not have monthly bills for pbone plans or electric service or credit cards etc.

Wow! That would be so great! LOL!!!

message 58: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments But locked, not customisable, closed systems so you can't go anywhere outside apple, dodgy digital rights, not to mention adding in screws into the phone that serve no functional purpose besides breaking your screen when you drop it so it costs you money to replace your screen, or buy a new phone.

Also the virus argument is pretty irrelevant for phones as most viruses aren't for phones (at the moment of course), also as all apps are monitored and checked. But if you click on a dodgy link then you're going to be as screwed in both operating systems.

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Making monthly payments is pretty much the American way, we don't nothing if we didn't make monthly payments ;-)
As to the quality of music on phones my son specifically got the LGG3 for that reason, it does have really good speakers, and also yes there are tons of apps to improve music quality :-)

Tasha Berit, you reminded me about why I switched. It was all bc of memory space. I'm sure you are already aware of this since you have phone wars at home but one of the main reasons I switched was bc we could buy memory space for much, much cheaper than getting that memory thing iphone has...excuse my very untech savviness. ;) Also, at the time, iphone was still small and I loved the larger screen on my samsung.

Rusalka, I'll see if my hub checked out the app idea. I'm sure he has but maybe not. thanks :)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Yes, that is the main reason I'm getting a new phone, I need more storage, and I'm eligible to EDGE UP ;-)

message 62: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have a Samusung Galaxy 4 (I think) and my last 3 phones have been Samsung Droids. They can't be beat. I don't use a lot of memory, but in our household, our children don't get smart phones until they can pay for them themselves, so often my teens have my phone and use them for everything! They use a lot of memory and are able to each have their own which would not be possible on an iPhone.

message 63: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Tejas: I'm still living with my parents, so they do the electric and water bills every month since I'm unemployed yet !
And all other things I can get I get them by cash ..

@Rusalka: You got a point .. Its only about what you prefer !

message 64: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4526 comments I have today off so I'm looking forward to this long weekend. Summer is a busy time for me at work so having an extra day away from the office is quite welcome. I spent the morning in the vegetable garden weeding, staking tomatoes and generally cleaning up. I'll do some more weeding n the front of the house tomorrow. My street leads down to the park where there is a major fireworks display so at around six it seems like the entire city passes by my house. Then afterwards we get everybody going the other way. We can watch from an upstairs porch.

All this talk about phones reminds me that I'm due for an upgrade. I have an iPhone but I think it's a version 4. I'd have to take off the case to check. I'm not sure what I'll get.

message 65: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am off work today as well. I should be outside working in the yard, but it is too hot. 32C (90F) and due to be 36C (97F) by 4:00pm. I should have been up with the sun to beat the heat, but I slept in on my day off. I am being lazy and just started a new book.

I miss the 4th of July fireworks that our city used to have at the County Fairgrounds every year. It is about 1/2 mile from my house and friends and family would gather at my house, put the little kids in strollers and wagons and we would all walk there, lay out blankets and watch the fireworks and the people around us. They decided it cost too much money for the fireworks and stopped doing it about 7 years ago.

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm enjoying a much deserved relax with a beer and a book. I spent today baby oiling up my boat...because I love it so much! Seriously, the stuff does wonders on bringing the paint job up. Also i washed the windows, food shopping, cooked dinner, and a few other odd jobs. I think i will ache tomorrow. So excited though as we should have our solar operational tomorrow. It's been a long time coming. Everything takes longer living on a boat.

Tasha My husband is taking my daughter to picnic and fireworks tonight so I have the night off ;) I'll order a pizza for my son and I and then I'll be drinking a guinness and catching up on a couple of shows, Bones and Orange/Black. I am so behind on both of these and need to catch up! I'll read a bit after that. I'm looking forward to a quiet night. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59881 comments For me, iPhone is what I'm used to. It does everything I want and need. I can't deal with the learning curve of switching over to something else. I don't want to spend 15 minutes to figure out how to do something that should only take seconds. Yeah, I'd probably figure it out eventually, but I don't have the patience for it.

I've used DOS, then Windows since personal computers came out (yes, I'm that old). A few years ago, I bought a Mac Book. I don't use it because I can't be bothered to spend the time to become fluent with it.

message 72: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments So true, Janice, about there being huge overhead in switching. I think iPhones are superior in some respects, but their monthly plans are rather pricey for my limited needs. I bought my Samsung android smart phone 4 or even 5 years ago for $400 up front, but then I only spend about $35 per month on my calling/data/texting plan. I'm very happy with how this has worked out for me and continue to add on features and apps when I find something useful.

Wishing everyone a good weekend - and happy fourth of July for those celebrating this holiday.

Kandice My husband has been working on an outdoor aviary for the last couple of weeks. He finished at the beginning of this week and we placed our love birds and single dove. Tuesday we added three more doves and tonight we added 4 finches. It looks and sounds so happy! I love it.

Our hope is to eventually build a walk in aviary in one corner of our yard and include a lot more birds, a pond and some tortoises.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments After a night of drinking I wake up look at my phone and see a different color audible icon. Apparently it updated when I got in wifi range. I then went to start my book and saw the speed was at 1.5 instead of 2x. Whoa. Speed settings have been increased 2 is now about at the old 3x. The old 3x was really double speed if you looked at the time counter. Pretty sure 1.5 is my new setting. Wonder though if the speed settings must ve different on different devices which would explain how some people can't believe I listen at 2x. If their was as fast as my new 2x ai understand completely. 3x must be chipmunk.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Ugh, it is 8:30pm and it is still 90F(32C) out. Not a breeze in sight. I am home alone for a change and don't feel like going to watch fireworks. I may turn on the TV after I take a shower.

Happy 4th of July

message 81: by Kandice (new)

Kandice My family went off to watch the fireworks and I am home with the dogs so they don't go insane due to the sounds, etc. They get so pitifully afraid. They are both in my lap as I type and strangely enough they both hang their tongues out and pant when they are frightened. I don't remember any other dogs of ours doing that in the past and wonder if they both do it because they learned it one from the other.

message 93: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2098 comments @Sarah: the solar panels look great! How much do you estimate you'll get electricity from them in the summertime?

On another note: I just got a phone call from the US. My younger daughter (she's 16) is currently there on a three-week cross-country trip (it's sort of a language course, they travel in a group, with adult leaders, so it's perfectly safe). They started out in LA on Friday and are now in Las Vegas. The leader of her group called me and told me that my daughter has been taken to a hospital, as she has been repeatedly throwing up and was dehydrated. They suspect a sunstroke, most likely nothing more serious, so she will be put on i.v. to get some liquids into her. They were due to continue towards Grand Canyon on Monday morning (they travel by minibus), the leader was still unsure whether she will be able to follow the group or whether she will have to fly and catch up with the group later. I'm not too worried as I know she is taken good care of, I'm just sorry that her trip hast started out a bit badly.

message 94: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Sorry to hear about you daughter. I hope she feels better soon so she can join in with the rest of the travels. It sucks when you're ill on holiday.

Difficult to say about the solar. we have a monitor which tells us how much power we are getting from the panels but I guess the test will be this week to see how well they keep our batteries full. During the brief period of Sun yesterday, we were getting 8 amps of power. We do not have many electrical devices at present - lights, water pump, chargers for phones, kindles and laptops. Our main draw is the fridge which takes 4 amps so we've not had it on much but now we have solar we can keep it on during the day. we are going to replace the toolbox for a proper fridge soon which will be more efficient still. Other people we've talked to say during the summer that they don't have to run their engines at all to charge the batteries which is good news.

message 95: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sorry to hear that about your daughter Camilla. Hopefully she recovers quickly.

Stephanie Sorry to hear about your daughter, Camilla :( hope she feels better soon!

message 98: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2098 comments Thank you all for the well wishes! I already received a text message from the group leader, they will discharge my daughter after she is finished with the i.v. fluid bag currently running and give her some antibiotics to go. Not sure why the antibiotics if it was supposed to be a heat stroke, maybe they are suspecting some nasty stomach bug after all. But currently it seems that she will be able to continue with the rest of the group in the morning. I have also been in contact with our insurance agency, they will handle all the bills resulting from this; in cases like this you are really happy that you have a travel insurance!

message 99: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Hope she enjoys the rest of her trip! Glad it's not too dire. My understanding from friends who have ended up in hospital in the States randomly is that antibiotics are a bit more commonplace. Hope it's just heatstroke and that she drinks lots of water for the rest of the trip.

Hope your mum worrying instincts are okay :)

message 100: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59881 comments It sounds like your daughter is recovering well. It's too bad that her trip was interrupted this way.
