Sarah | 18549 comments I had lots of posts to catch up on in this thread.

Congrats on the job Amanda. Sorry to hear about your grandmother. My Grand Aunt had a stroke last week and it was pretty bad. I think she was 85-ish. Unfortunately she got a chest infection and died a couple days ago. Even though I knew it was coming, it's still sad.

I hope you enjoy Blur Rusalka. They were on the radio earlier and I did wonder when the gig was coming up for you and now I know!

Love the picture TJ. Very cute.

We must have some of that stormy weather you're getting Peggy. Friday was awful here, raining really heavily. Yesterday was back to summery weather and then today it's really windy and raining heavy again. We've even had to light the woodburner as it's a bit chilly in the boat. But that's mainly because we've had to have all the windows and doors open to air the boat because we painted the inside of the hull with extremely smelly bitumen paint.

Bella | 502 comments UGH! KIDS!! GRRRRRR!!!! The kids claimed they didn't have enough clothes to go on vacation for 10 days, so my husband told them they needed to gather together all of their clothes so we can see what they have that fits. Before we spend money on new clothes. I don't know where they were keeping it- maybe some parallel universe connected to their bedrooms- but now I have like 15 extra loads of laundry. (In addition to the 10-15 loads I do during the week.)

Every time I start pulling stuff out of the huge, stinky pile (I have two boys)- I think, "Oh, there's that set of sheets, towels, shirts, etc."

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Laundry, it's never ending ;-)

message 407: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I also do about 10-12 loads a week. Most of my friends think that sounds excessive, but obviously you guys do too, so it's not that excessive!

Sorry Bella!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So oroud of my wife. She left the dark side of iphone's and went and got her first droid today. I've hated appke forever and told her not to get that thing 5 or 6 years ago. She said she is sick of having her iohone be awesome unyil the next newest model comes out then her phone goes slow. Where she works evwryone has a droid her iphone is the only one that doesn't get rception. Although it did a year ago. And internet. I asked her to check something on facebook the other day 5 minutes later it had almost loaded. Said that starts as soon as a new iphone is released. Well thats apple. They control you

Kandice Tonight we are attending the National Youth Arts awards because my son won Best Actor in a Musical. I am so excited I can't stand it. He gave his bedridden grandfather his acceptance speech last night since his granpa can't attend and it made me cry. :*)

Yeah we do 10-15 loads a week here. Probably more in the winter as there are more clothes worn daily and less in summer with less and lighter clothing

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Goodness, this was a busy group over the weekend. I started to get online yesterday to check in, but that would have involved getting out of the comfy recliner to get the laptop, I just didn't want to get up. LOL. I am exhausted and sore all over from our trip to Spring River.

Before we got started Saturday morning the company we had transport our canoe for us gave us an overview of what to expect. Supposedly 2 miles into the trip should have been the first big set of falls (Deadman's Curve) and there should have been signs alerting us that it was ahead and to keep to the right. Well, they lied. Maybe 20/30 minutes in to the float we came to a set of falls that we later learned actually was Deadman's Curve. We went left. We hit a rock. We flipped. :( I have several small scrapes and bruises on my right shin, a big scrape and bruise about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide on my left thigh, and a golf ball size bruise on my hip. Plus various other bruises and sore muscles.

Since we did not know that was actually Deadman's Curve, I thought there was a much worse area ahead of us and was freaking out a little bit. I actually felt like I was on the verge of a panic attack for a good part of the day. If we ever go again I think I will enjoy it much more since I know what to expect now. The unknown and anticipation of a really bad drop/curve that never came had me in the wrong mindset to really enjoy our trip.

message 420: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds scary! Hope the bruises will fade away soon!

message 421: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Stephanie - We always have cicadas (or locusts as some people call them) here, but they were extremely prevalent this year. The old wives tale is that every 7 years is "the year of the locust" and they swarm like crazy. But, it hasn't been 7 years since the last time they were this bad. During the spring this year they were so loud at some places it sounded like a train or really loud motor of some sort running. I could even hear them inside my car while I was driving 60 mph with the radio on!

@Amanda, I'm very sorry to hear about your grandmother. But, congrats on the new job! How do you feel about going back to your childhood home to live/work?

@TJ, triple the cuteness in that picture!

Condolences, Sarah, for your loss. My heart goes out to you, Amanda, about your grandmother going into hospice care.

Kandice, hope you all enjoyed the awards night. That's awesome!

message 425: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Thanks for the well wishes! If I could just remember not to try to cross my legs while sitting at my desk and pushing on the big bruise, I would be doing much better! LOL.

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments I am currently losing steam at work. I work at two museums. Today I have a full day at the one and I am writing school programming for high school students for next school year. I have 2/3 done but I don't think what I picked for the last 1/3 will work. Bummer! Back to the drawing board for that part!

A new job for Amanda and going back home - super.
Sorry about your grandmother.
Sarah - sorry for your loss.
KimeyDiane - wow - I have never gone canoing anywhere with falls! Hope your bruises heal quickly.
TJ - the three boys are so cute in their Oshkoss denims.
Peggy - glad to hear your storm is over. We had a damp weekend here. Cooled things off.
Kandice - congratulations on your son's award.
Travis - how was Ant Man? My grandson and daughter went to see it last night, but I have not talked to them today.
Caitlin - you work at two museums?
LOL, I am not going to talk about laundry or having to buy new cloths for kids. That is all I hear from my daughters.

message 432: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments This is kind of a alleviation post... sorry...

I had hyper-insulinemia during my last 3 pregnancies, which means I clean the sugar in my blood too efficiently because I segregate a lot more insulin than necessary. The thing is that this means my pancreas works more than it should and it would eventually wear out and develop a diabetes. A hyper insulenemia not treated becomes a diabetes in 10 or 15 years.
It seems I don't suffer it when I'm not pregnant, but I never had a blood work done to confirm this. (I had 3 babies in 4 years, who has time to do blood work???).
The thing is that my father was diagnosed with diabetes type II a year ago, and this absolutely changes my panorama. I didn't have until this moment any other relative with diabetes. Now I have a direct family antecedent.
SO I'll be doing the blood work soon to finally know my actual situation. So far I have reduced drastically the amount of carbohydrates I consume, and I'm trying to slowly introduce physical activity to my life. At least I'm weighting 135 pounds, and a correct weight is a very important part of the treatment.
I'm not scared, but I admit I'm a little worried, since I'm only 36, and I feel that even taking care of my health, I have so many years still to live (the women in my family all usually reach their nineties) that eventually I'll develop the disease.

message 433: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I understand why you're worried Sandra. Hopefully it turns out to be a pregnancy thing, and I'm sure that if you are at risk of developing actual diabetes, your doctor can give you some tips to prevent it or at least delay onset. When is your appointment?

message 434: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Fingers crossed for you Sandra. It's the right thing to do so you know where you stand.

message 435: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Fingers crossed here as well, Sandra. Hope all turns out to be ok :-)

message 436: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm glad that you are going to get tested Sandra! Diabetes is a scary disease, but is very manageable. If you do have it, there is no reason you can't still live a long and healthy life as long as you follow doctor's orders. Managing your weight and being cautious with what you eat will make a big difference. My grandmother had diabetes and lived to her late 80's. My mother and one of my sisters also have it, as well as one of my good friends.

message 437: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Fingers crossed, everything turns out Sandra :-) hopefully it is just a pregnancy thing, your body goes all crazy when you're pregnant, and you know better than most ;-)

message 438: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I've got my fingers crossed for you Sandra. Hopefully it will just be a pregnancy related thing.

My appointment is only in October. This is suppose to be a very good doctor I was recommended, and I decide to wait (this stupid amount of time) to consult him.

Roz | 4528 comments I have 2 friends with diabetes ( one in her 40s, the other early 60s). It's a manageable disease. Diet and exercise are important.

message 443: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Fingers crossed for you Sandra. Hopefully it's just gestational, and your pancreas calms down. Sounds like you're doing all the right things with diet and exercise already :)

I agree with the others. I believe we have a thread somewhere in here on Diabetes books and recipes. I should revisit it actually and add in a few more tips and resources I've discovered this year (Lexx is a T1 Diabetic).

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Just a stalker in the graphic novel group. Don't think I've ever commented yhere at all but just got email that the mod/creator was killed by a drunk driver. It os just sad. Even if I don't know who he was drunk driving is completely preventable by the drunk driver by not driving

message 445: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments When I read Kenny was killed by drunk dtiver I actually thought it wad a thread for a south park graphic novel anf I was like hey those bastards killed Kenny. Then after a whilr I went wait wasn't the mod named kenny oh crap that was a mean thing to think

message 446: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments That's sad, Travis. It's incredible how irresponsible some people can be. It's most than known by now the consequences of DUI...

@Rusalka, I didn't know about Lexx being diabetic. I'll see if I can find the thread. Thank you for the tip.

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments How sad, Travis.

message 448: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Horrible Travis. Drunk driving makes me SO mad, I just can't understand why people do it. If something happens, innocent people are often the victim.

message 449: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That is sad Travis. I remember when I was younger there used to be adverts on TV about drink driving and what could happen (like we don't already know) but they seem to have vanished off the screens now. I reckon they should bring them back as well as ones which tell people not to be dumb and ring 999 for an ambulance when they have a cold. But I guess they would be government funded and we're going through a time of austerity.

message 450: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments So it's now school holidays for the summer here in the UK. Which means EVERYONE seems to have hired a narrowboat to go cruising along the stretch of canal we're on. We had a lot of rain over the weekend so the ground is soft. This combined with the speeding hire boaters has meant that the mooring pins which hold our boat to the bank keep coming out and the boat is all over the place. Luckily we've not ended up across the other side of the canal although other neighbouring boats have. I had to repin us 3 times yesterday plus help with another boat getting muddy and stung by nettles in the process. On a plus, we've been treated to water vole sightings for the last two nights around sunset.
