I didn't know what a water vole was so had to google. Looks sweet! Do they cause any trouble in the canals?

message 452: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Not sure about trouble Camilla. They are quite elusive and generally only seen around sunrise and sunset when they are most active. They are apparently the fastest declining mammal here in the UK so I feel privileged to have spotted one. I've heard that the decline is due to the introduction of the American Mink which preys on them. I've not seen one of these minks though. I think they generally eat plants so I don't think the copious amounts of bread people (wrongfully) throw in the canal to feed the ducks encourages them to the area. I'm guessing it does rats although I've only seen the one so far. They also nest in the canal banks so I don't think we're at risk of them stowing away on the boat :-)

Ahhh, but you never know if there's an adventurous one around. You might find yourselves with a new houseboat guest!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm sure is very annoying to have all those boat messing around, Sarah.
The water vole is cute...

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Just got the funniest wrong number :

Woman: hi, I just found the perfect book for you. It has more than 600 pages but you have the whole summer to read it.
Me:awesome, but who are you?

message 457: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments lol, Esther! Are you sure it was a wrong number call? It just sounds like a call for you! :)
Did you at least ask for the title of the book?

Some pictures are just hilarious.

message 460: by Peggy (last edited Jul 30, 2015 02:14AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments LOL Sandra. Several of them seem to be pretty old, 80s or something considering their hair and clothes. Unless that is done on purpose and the pictures were actually taken last year. That would be weird.

I just read on the Dutch news that a plane in Australia hit a kangaroo while taking off. No one got hurt, except maybe the kangaroo. But then I wondered, do Dutch events which are really not important or relevant for the world (just strange or funny) also make it to the US or Australia for example?

message 461: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jul 30, 2015 04:27AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sometimes. Depending on the event.

That doesn't make the news in Aus. We expect it, and have had other things going down at the moment. But also, other countries tend to find our animals being in places they shouldn't more amusing than we do.

message 462: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I think all of the picture are really old. Some of them made me wonder what were they thinking?

I'd say that the news lately have been giving more space to that kind of weird, strange, funny, improbable news. Probably stimulated by the social nets, etc.
I was commenting to my husband just a few days ago how some days I feel annoyed when reading the news on line. I usually check 4 or 5 newspapers on line (from Uruguay, Argentina, from my area, one more US general focused, and one more international focused) and it's incredible how ALL of them are each day more saturated of this new style of news like the viral video, the last memes about an event, what a famous person twitted, the video of the surveillance camera (ex: the old lady hitting the burglar with her bag), etc. I call the people who writes those news the "twitter-youtube journalists".
I'm not saying some of this new are not interesting. I'd have taken a look at the kangaroo-plane one for sure. But it seems that they conquer more and more part of the news.
Printed newspapers charge to advertisers according to the number of copies they sell. On line newspapers charge according the number of clicks they get. So I suppose this kind of news get a lot of clicks.

That is awesome! What was the book? Curious minds want to know!

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments he he... when she realized she was speaking to a stranger she apologized and hanged up before I could asked the title.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Not sure where to post this, but I was taking a shower and out of nowhere thought 'hey! isn't the third kingkiller chronicle book supposed to come out in a couple of months?' Anyone who knows more about it? Did some quick googling on my phone and I guess august is not happening :( (i'm probably way behind with this!). I read December 2016 somewhere, yikes!

message 466: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes it looks like it's delayed. I think I posted about it while you were away. 2016 looks like the date for now.

message 467: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments You know you're too focused on deadlines when....

I just got a text, "What happened to you?"
I was supposed to meet a friend for lunch. She's from out of town and here for a few days.

"OMG," I replied, "I forgot. I'm on my way." I put my soup down, grabbed my purse and slipped on my sandals.

"That was yesterday! LOL!" came her response.

At least she wasn't sitting in the restaurant alone. Two of our friends were there as well.

message 468: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ah, I guess now I have to confess I did not check all unread messages when I got back.

Lol Janice :D Too bad you missed seeing your friend though!

message 469: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Lol, Janice! I'm sorry you missed the lunch, though.

message 470: by Tasha (new)

Tasha So many things to catch up on.

Sarah, sorry for your loss.

Sandra, good luck with testing in October. I think changing your diet and getting in some excersize will make a huge difference.

Travis, that is really a sad thing from your graphic group. That's just horrible.

Janice, you tell us the funniest stories! I just had a nice laugh at your missed lunch. ;)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments OMG! Some of those were hilarious, and others made my eyes pop.

I have seen Still Stripping After 25 Years in many quilt shops. Stripping is a quilting term, but as the title of a book, it's pretty funny.

Do you quilt? I ask because I made all of my daughter's clothes until she started public school and saved them with the intentions of making quilts from pieces of special articles. Let me tell you...quilting is harder than sewing apparently because I have ruined many, many chunks of her favorite dresses in my attempts!

I'll cut a mess of squares, start and then have to pull apart in the hopes that later I can make smaller squares of those I've hopeless ruined. O_o

She's 16 now and I gave up about 3 years ago, but am hoping to at least make a baby sized quilt before she has her first child. Probably a pipe dream....

message 475: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments For some of those titles you really wonder how no-one has noticed the double meaning...

Yes, I quilt. When you have different fabrics in various sizes and shapes, a crazy quilt is the way to go. You can embellish with embroidery and buttons. I've never made one myself, but I've always wanted to. I've seen them made with a mix of velvet, polyester, cotton, rayon - scaps of whatever you have.

message 477: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments The first and only thing I have ever quilted was a crazy patchwork pin cushion from when I was 10. I remember as it had a really nice piece of velvet on it. I'm sure I have it in a cupboard somewhere...

Sandra. Great list. So of them are so... so... wrong. OMG. :)

message 480: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Janice, that is exactly what I had in mind, but there is just something about straight lines that messes me up!

Those titles are infinitely hilarious.

message 487: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Wow. It's been a while since I've had a chance to check in with this group. Work's been a killer, so life has pretty much been eating, sleeping, with only about 30 minutes of reading time in the morning. Today is all about catching up on chores, and hopefully, starting the The Aeneid this afternoon, evening, when my Nook is charged.

message 488: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Nice pictures Stephanie! Your dog looks just my in-laws. Her name is Sally and we call her Sally the Camel for some reason. She is unusually large for a golden.

We have outbuildings in our backyard and there is a litter of bunnies under one. I have a tiny dog that loves to go under there and just hang out with them. I'll be sad when they leave. I'll have to try to get some photos.

Stephanie Thanks all :)
I think Blake is unusually large for a golden as well. He is really tall so people always say "he's so big!" He is about 90lbs now but the vet says his weight is good :)

So he's the same size as Sally! She was 92 last time she was in. She's a girl so even heftier, I guess, but they would be a good match!

We are potty training our 2 years old too. He is doing pretty well. In a couple of weeks, when he is done, we'll have only 1 child with diapers again after 10 years. :)
