Sarah | 18549 comments Now the Nunchucks in the face sound painful.

Yesterday we saw a water vole, the same one twice in the same spot so he must live there. They are becoming quite rare apparently.

And a parrot! obviously it's not native to here. someone on one of the visiting boats had one escape. it was a blue and yellow maccaw (sp?). It's been living in the trees for the last four days making a right noise. I don't think it wants to get back in the cage. I don't blame him really but I would be worried about whether it could survive a winter or not.

No, she's not home yet. They arrived in New York yesterday after having been in Washington D.C. and will return to Finland on Thursday. She has been fine after that one incident and has enjoyed the trip a lot. I haven't spoken to her, but she sends text messages or WhatsApps every couple of days. Thank you for asking!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Wow, glad to know she is having a great time!

message 307: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sarah, we had a parrot (Blue&gold macaw) that flew up to the trees/woods in the back of our house and was up there for a couple of days. He made lots of noise but as his wings were clipped, I think he was afraid of coming back down. Thankfully it was spring or summer so he didn't freeze but we worried about him. I forget how he came down but he eventually did. I bet that one is scared if he is someone's pet. Hopefully he gets down soon.

Glad to hear she has been doing much better after that first incident!

message 309: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Birds that have clipped wings have a harder time of landing than flying so they sometimes can't land where they want even if they are trying to get back! That being said, can't blame them for avoiding the cage after a taste of freedom!

Stephanie Glad to hear your daughter is doing better, Camilla!! How did she like DC? We are about a 100 miles or so from there :) but it can take forever to get to because of traffic :(

Actually, I don't know how she liked it, as we haven't spoken after she visited D.C. We tried both FaceTime and WA phone call yesterday evening, but the internet connection was too spotty on her side, it kept breaking up all the time. I guess I'll hear more tomorrow. I know she liked San Antonio, I suspect most because she had a chance to do some shopping as well as visit Six Flags, LOL!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So I ordered all three books in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. I wanted the same edition for all of them and the first book was hard to find, so I got that one secondhand. The other two arrived today and although tsotw and tag are the same editions, the first is much larger. I can live with that, although it annoys me a bit already. But the copy of tpoh I got is a totally different condition than the other two, and than the one I ordered. I want to send it back and get the edition I want, but maybe I'm being too fussy?

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I should have my own thread - The Things I See Out My Window

This morning, I heard something odd. So I looked out my patio door, and there was a guy throwing up on my lawn. Good morning! Rough night last night? Even rougher morning this morning? Thank you for sharing.

Just now, I looked out my office window and there are three young women standing in the parking lot right outside the entrance, passing a joint back and forth, bold as you please.

And I want to move? And miss all the entertainment? What is wrong with me?

message 314: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Ew! Sorry you had to see that Janice :(

message 315: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm not one to normally say this, but I LOVE the class I am taking for Microsoft office! I'm learning so much that I didn't know :) in regards to a job, while I am in school, I am going to have to focus on finding one that is very part time as I am finding out that the schooling is a lot more than I anticipated. Each item that I listen to is an hour long plus I pause a lot to take notes and I'm not the best note taker..any advice on taking notes? I tend to right down the things I feel are important but end up not being on the quiz after each section :(

Sarah | 18549 comments I've got to go to the dentist today and I don't want to. I'm fine now with dentists but I have an ulcer and my mouth hurts and I don't want her to prod it about and make it feel worse.

message 323: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh Janice. lol. You just have to laugh.

message 324: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Rub Vegemite on the ulcer Sarah. Swear by it. I had bracers for 4 years as a teenager, and my mouth was permanently ulcerated. My older brother told me to do it, and it cleared up my mouth when medicated gels and such didn't work. Just stick your finger in the jar and rub it on the ulcer.

It will hurt like buggery for a few seconds, but the salt kills the bacteria and the salt and the vitamin E heals the skin.

message 325: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Will marmite work just as well? ;-)

message 326: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments @Janice, I agree with Rusalka. First, laugh. Then, move!

@Sarah, I have mouth ulcers all the time. Generally only one or two, but I can have 6 or 7 at the same time. No doctor or dentist has found a solution. My buccal mucosa is my weak point, and all the stress is expressed there. It's really painful when the dentist first touches it, but then the same pain works as a anesthesia (same thing when eating), and you don't feel it any more. Good luck!

message 327: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sarah wrote: "Will marmite work just as well? ;-)"

message 328: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Mmmm... I'll try it too.

message 329: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments But.. but.. doesn't that mean you'll have a constant vegemite taste in your mouth? I think I'd prefer a hurting ulcer ;-)

I got this gel at the drugstore which is supposed to help by numbing and putting some kind of protective layer over it. The stuff worked, but I usually have these ulcers in places that are always in contact with other parts of my mouth, so the gel never stays where it's supposed to be, basically making it useless.

message 330: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I found that most of the over the counter gels are full of sugar and numbed for a few mins, and the medicated one I was prescribed didn't work plus really gritty.

So yeasty, salty flavour (which I am used to being an Aussie and it being a family institution) for 5 mins over an ulcer corresponding with every. single. tooth. (yes, I am not joking), I take Vegemite.

message 331: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jul 23, 2015 07:28AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I'm really not meaning to sound harsh or blunt. I don't care honestly about the spread (although I haven't heard in detail over family dinners the chemical compound of Marmite, I have for Vegemite). And I know we are odd for eating it. (seriously though, you need to eat my Vegemite toast).

I realised that from talking about ulcers my back's been all prickly and my shoulders tense. Who would have thought that pain from 10-12 years ago is still so embedded it makes you all tense.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Oh, Janice, I feel for you, I really do! Any luck on finding a better place to stay yet?

We are taking the camper and canoe to the Spring River in Arkansas this weekend. Spring River is a fast moving river with class I and II rapids. We have never canoed in water with rapids before so I'm a little nervous. Almost 10 million gallons of water flow through per hour. Plus it is fed from an underground river so the water temps are a constant 58 degrees F. That'll be nice in the heat, but probably quite a shock to the system if the boat turns over and we're toppled out. We have never flipped our canoe (which is made more like a kayak), but I'm afraid we may this weekend. I know I shouldn't be this nervous about this trip, but I am for some reason. I'm thinking about going to buy a better life jacket and actually wearing it. I've never worn a life jacket in a canoe before!

You could try rinsing your mouth with salt water Sarah. I find that works pretty well for me in getting rid of ulcers.

message 336: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I will get vegemite from the health food store and give it a try. I like vegemite anyway but I already have marmite and couldn't resist asking. when I get some, I'll compare ingredients and let you know Rusalka. Back from dentist. Looks like I've been grinding my teeth while I'm asleep which explains the achy teeth. the ulcer is just a one off even if it is big and painful. I feel for you Sandra having them all the time.

message 337: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Sarah, I also evidently grind my teeth whilst asleep :( Additionally, I have TMJ disorder. Difficult to sort out which came first. Various other factors - childhood neck injury, jaw misalignment, carrying tension in jaw, and more recently chronic acid reflux.

I've learned various physical therapy "exercises" for back/neck/jaw alignment (and tongue placement - isn't that funny!). I wear a dental guard at night to protect my teeth from further damage. I couldn't wear big bulky kind. Would jerk awake in a panic. But fortunately I found slimline version that works great for me.

KimeyDiann, my spouse and I camped along the Spring River once many years ago. In Missouri tho, not Arkansas. So pretty but we got massively rained out. Wound up holed up in small motel laundering all our wet, muddy clothing and gear.

We meant to go back some time. Maybe we can do that pretty soon in our little camper van.

Janice, good thing you keep a sense of humor. Doesn't change the situation, but does make it more tolerable. We have new neighbors who pose a challenge for us. Their driveway light stays on all night, every night, and is pointed straight into our front doorway window. They often keep odd hours and play loud music or talk in loud voices outside late at night. They recently poured grill grease and waste down the storm sewer and stunk up the neighborhood with smell of rotting meat and rancid oil. Called the city about that one. Any way, you get the picture. Ugh.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am at work and cannot listen to the song threads, but will when I get home.

The Vegemite/Marmite comments made me LOL again! I haven't found it here to try still.

My best results for mouth ulcers have been to use an asprin placed directly on the sore. It has to be one without a coating (like the old Bayer kind.) Place it on the sore spot and hold it there for a minute or two until it starts to get soft but not so long it disolves and falls appart. Then remove it. It leaves a coating on the sore. The salicylic acid in the asprin is what helps.

message 343: by Kandice (new)

Kandice You can also just use BC Powders, Stanbeck's or any other headache powder. They're great for sore teeth too.

Stephanie Anyone here get cicadas (insect) where they are? They are sooooo loud right now here! We had one in the breezeway of the apartment building this morning when I took Blake out.

message 349: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments None here either. We get grasshoppers which make a bit of a noise but nowhere near as loud as cicadas. I've experienced their noise in Thailand though. Amazing really.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have no motivation at all for work since I started again on Monday. I always need a couple of days to get into it, but now with thesis-pressure gone, half of my colleagues on holiday and no students around, I don't feel the urge to do anything.

I spent Wednesday afternoon, yesterday, and the last two hours translating the four pages of my English thesis summary into Dutch. And though it is a bit more to it than just a simple translation, there's no way it should take me 2 days ;-) I did go shopping instead of working this morning and am very excited about our summer holiday next year (Norway - normally we don't think about it so far ahead, or we do think about it but make no decisions until the end of the year, but somehow on Cuba we decided it would be Norway next year. Rob really wants to go someplace without heat) so I keep googling information about that too. Ah well, maybe I will do better next week. I'm now debating whether I should waste more time doing nothing behind my computer or go sit outside and read a book.
