Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I haven't heard them here. But look what I found:

http://www.cicadamania.com/audio/

Near the bottom you have a huge amount of audios from cicadas of different types. My kids will love this! And I'll be sorry I showed it to them... I know... :)

message 352: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thanks for sharing that, Sandra!! I think the ones I've heard the last few days sound closest to the 2nd and 3rd from the bottoms of the list.

message 353: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Not only do we get some cicadas, but we get June bugs like crazy! They just show up, usually near the beginning of June< and are complete pests for about 2 weeks and then they disappear again until the next year. Such a strange life cycle.

message 354: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm not sure if I've seen a June bug in person before..I had to look it up.

message 355: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I have to look it up too, but now I see the picture I identify them.
We didn't have many bugs this year in our area. Probably because we are not having summer either...

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Beautiful new profile picture, Stephanie!

message 357: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thanks, Sandra :) it is an old photo from when we lived in Omaha. We need an updated family photo :)

message 358: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Is this what you guys looked at? http://bugguide.net/images/raw/PK0/KE...

message 359: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie That's what I saw on Google :)

message 360: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments yes, it's the same I saw.

message 361: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments We have cicadas here. They've been very busy this year. I know they can be loud but I love the sound of them at night. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my family went to Crystal Beach for the summer. We had a cottage and I slept on the sun porch and listened to the cicadas at night before I fell asleep. It's a memory that always makes me smile.

message 362: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments We used to see june bugs all of the time, but I have not seen any for years. Ours were a dark brown, and I remember them as being kind of furry. They used to stick on the screen door on our front poarch. They were very lathargic and we used to pick them off the screen and put them on our shirt and wear them like pins. My sister hated them because one got tangled in her hair once. (She was such a baby).

I have never heard cicadas. I think they are east of the Mississippi, but I could be wrong.

message 363: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Live bug pins. That is so sweet. Except when they start to move I suppose ; )

Betty T (betty_t) | 24 comments Hey Janice, any more excitement outside your window?

message 365: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We have cicadas but living in the country my entire life leaves me kind of like how a city peraon never hears the traffic. I shall have to give a listen.

message 366: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We have june bugs too. Quite a few this year actually. Every nighy as I was finishing in the barn it would be jist dark enougj outside that the barn lights attracted them and I'd have a pile of them all over the place for probably a good 3 weeks. Probably hundreds came in every night

message 367: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments We have cicadas and june bugs both. The cicadas south of here by the Guadalupe River are different than here and north Texas. Loud, deep whirring sound, almost like an electric or steam engine. I like the ones that are not as loud and make the more pleasant clicking sound.

It was all quiet today. :)

message 369: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments We have cicadas here as well. They can get quite noisy.

I got some good news and some bad news today.

Good news: I got my new job as a nurse practitioner. The practice has various sites and the funny thing is they are assigning me to the one in the town my parents live. It seems that I have come full circle and will be working in the town I grew up in.

Bad news: My grandmother got put on hospice this week. She is in her 90s, but it is still sad.

message 370: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments Congrats on the new job, Amanda.

It doesn't matter what the age, it's still a difficult thing when someone we love it moved into hospice.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments cicadas are a part of life here. it's not summer without hem. loud.so loud.

but in the big smoke at the moment (Sydney) to see blur tonight. very excited. but will be back online tomorrow

message 372: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Congratulations on your job, Amanda!
We had my grandpa in an hospice his last 2 or 3 years since he needed constant attention. It's sad and it seemed unfair, but sometimes there's no other option.

message 373: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm sorry Amanda.

message 374: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Great news about the job Amanda! Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

We're having a summerstorm today, which is apparently quite rare, happening only once every 5 years and there have been only 25 since 1931. Several outside events and festivals that were planned for today have been cancelled. It's 9.45am now and already grey and windy. I have to do groceries on my bike today, so I'll go as soon as I've finished breakfast, so I hopefully won't get caught in the actual storm. Temperatures in the afternoon during rain can drop to 14C, yikes! Average for this time of year is 24C.

message 375: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Good luck with your groceries, Peggy! Stay dry and safe!

message 376: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Almost made it! When I was paying it was still dry, when I wanted to go outside it was raining hard. I figured it would be like that for hours so I just went ahead, but now I'm home and it's dry again. Doesn't that always happen?

message 377: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Congrats on the job, Amanda! Sorry to hear about your grandmother :(

message 378: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments lol, Peggy!

message 379: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Congrats, Amanda! And like everyone else, I'm sorry to hear about your gmom. It's always hard no matter the age.

Sometimes is better for the elders to have special care (and you can always make her happy by visiting!)

message 382: by Peggy (last edited Jul 25, 2015 08:09AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The storm is pretty bad. Nothing compared to tornadoes and such some of you get, but for Dutch standards quite stormy ;-) I'm in the part of the country that gets the least of it (mostly very windy and grey, rain every now and then), but in the west it's much worse. It's apparently the worst July-storm since they started keeping track of such things in 1901 (storms are much more common in autumn). Air traffic is disrupted, trains as well, several highways blocked because of fallen trees, throughout the whole country they advise everyone to stay inside and not go anywhere by car until later this evening when things are quieter, and one person dead because of a tree falling on his car. I'm glad tomorrow will be sort-of-summer again.

message 383: by Kandice (new)

Kandice It's been hot as blazes here recently and feels worse after the rain (unusual) we got last week. My daughter has a soccer tournament this weekend so we will be sitting in the sun much of today and tomorrow.

message 384: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It is quite warm here today because the humidity is making its way back after it not being very humid the last few days.

message 385: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Thanks everyone for the well wishes and sympathy remarks. I am working all weekend, but my husband is going to take the kids tomorrow to visit my gmom.

Kandice My youngest son is taking me to see Ant Man this morning, his treat! It's so lovely when your children begin to earn their own money and want to do nice things for you. :D Not sure if I can actually let him pay, but love the thought!
