Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It's a neat challenge for the elementary. There are 20 tasks each require 15 minutes. We completed reading wearing soneone elses shoes, instead of watching a favorite show, on the floor and one more yeaterday in an hour of reading Fortunately, the Milk. There is read cereal boxes, read cd lyrics while listening to cd. Read before bed or in bed. I think read in bathtub, poetry I can't even rememver them all. There are some very specific amd 1 or 2 that involve writing vs reading

It can seem intimidating, and the first week is pretty hard. I did this for 60 days, and ate strict paleo for about a year. I've never felt so good, my energy was great, and I lost a fare amount of weight. I slowly got away from it, as my job started demanding more and more of my time. I definitely feel the worse for it. I learned I was gluten sensitive, and lactose intolerant - and just cutting out those two things I feel like a different person.

Sarah | 18549 comments Love the challenge they've given your son Travis. I think it's a really fun way to get kids in to reading.

@Rusalka - yes we're on a canal - the Kennet & Avon. This canal is a bit special as it's a canalised river. It has a feed from both the River Avon and the River Kennet. So at these points the flow is quite strong and i believe is closed to navigation but it's ok where we are.

Listening to copious amounts of Motorhead right now after hearing Lemmy died earlier.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Would you believe I post a link to "Ace of Spades" on facebook every few months. Basically every time I do my 2-3 day binge of having to hear ace of spades a hundred times. And I have never gotten so much as 1 like for it. But I keep posting it not my fault my fruends aren't aren't down with motorhead. No one can ever match or sound lije Lemmy had a one of a kind growling voice. At least the cancer took him fast and didn't make him suffer

message 2761: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Lynda, I'm sure that cutting gluten and lactose off your diet totally changed the way you feel. My 7th child is lactose intolerant. He is near 3 now. We found out when he was 10 months, but it took around 5 month to him to start to feel better after we cut lactose of his diet. He wouldn't sleep, and looked uncomfortable all time. At some moments he was obviously in pain, but since he was a baby was hard to know what was exactly the problem. He is great now.

message 2762: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Oh, Sandra, I'm glad you found out about your son's intolerance at such a young age. Food allergies can be hard to diagnose, but make such a large impact on our health.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I need to research more about the whole30 challenges. I keep hearing about it, but I don't really know what it is. I'm planning on starting back on a grain-free diet Monday, but maybe I should consider whole30?
I did grain-free for about 6 months and it was amazing how easily I lost weight and how much better my digestive system was. I've tried to stay grain-free but the holidays and all wreaked havoc on that plan.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I read a little from here yesterday: http://whole30.com/whole30-program-ru...
It looks good. There's also two books to learn more and follow the program, It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways and The Whole 30: The official 30-day guide to total health and food freedom. My local library holds both.

message 2767: by Lynda (last edited Dec 29, 2015 06:13PM) (new)

Lynda | 836 comments The Whole 30 focuses on eliminating the foods that cause most people the most amount of problems, as a way of determining how food effects your system. It's focus is on eating clean, well-sourced protein (grass-fed, pastured), organic veggies/fruits, and healthy fats.

The first book Sandra mentioned goes further into the science behind the nutrition, and why certain foods are omitted. It's scientific, but not dry. The second is more of a summary. The second book is a little repetitive. They both contain some basic recipes, tips. and meal planning suggestions, but they aren't strictly cookbooks; the second more so than the first. That's okay, because just google "Paleo" or search Amazon and there is no shortage of resources.

My first Whole 30 was fits and starts. It took me a couple weeks of trying and re-starting, before it really sunk in and I committed. It's surprising how strong sugar and carb cravings are! But for me, if I can get past the first 7-10 days, I'm okay.

I've put these 2 on hold at the library. I've tried the raw foods diet and really loved it but it's just too hard to keep up with when I have others in the house eating other foods. I've really slipped away from it but want to get back to it however I'm really interested to check this whole 30 foods thing out.

Sarah | 18549 comments Well Storm Frank has been battering us. Winds are just peaking here but should die off in a couple hours. It's been dryish here but now the heavy rain is coming down. Our boat has been rocking some . Not good considering i have a hangover. The last thing i need right now is a swaying motion. Once it dies down we'll be ok though not like those in the North. Wales and Scotland have power issues and train disruption in addition to flooded properties and collapsed bridges now just like Northern England and i think Northern Ireland has been hit with it too. I think it's the wettest December on record.

It must be awful being on a boat Sarah! Your poor head! I can't stand boats at the best of times so being battered around on one by the wind would be my idea of hell. It's blowing a gale here at the moment but the rain has held off so far. Think it's due to start soon though. I think Storm Frankenstein would have been a better name than Frank!

It has been warmer than normal for this time of year but I don't know if it is having any direct bearing on all the rain and storms. We just seem to be getting battered by one storm after another. We are not getting it anywhere near as bad in the south as they are in the north though! I feel so sorry for all the people who have lost their homes due to the floods.

message 2775: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments It's so unusually warm for us. it hasn't felt like Christmas this year because it's so mild. We've only had three frosts, where it's reached 4C. Mostly it's been around 10-13C, overnight too. We were told to expect the coldest winter in decades but it looks like they got that wrong. I think we're in for some colder days this next week.

message 2776: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I'm in central PA, and we are having warm weather too, plus much more rain (no storms) that we usually have at this time of the year. That means a warm humid weather that feels more like Spring, when the snow starts melting. Really weird.
At the same time our families in Uruguay and Argentina were saying to us that they didn't had winter either (last June, July and August). The first part of their winter was like a mild Fall, and the second part like a mild Spring, with more storms in general than the rule.
It seems that this year the winter pattern is repeating itself all around the world. Warm and Humid.

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I feel for you Sarah.

Weather has been mild here as well, but we got 20cm of the white stuff yesterday, so I guess winter has arrived.

message 2778: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments We had a warm winter but not as bad as South America.

Jeez. 10 overnight is what we get here in Canberra now in Summer. We cool down a lot (which is why I like it here, stupid hot during the day but you can sleep at night). Not what you guys should be getting now.

Heres hoping it gets colder, but not so much it freezes all the flood water and then makes the problem last months instead of days.

I keep hearing people saying that January is going to be really cold and that we could get loads of snow then. We shall see....

I don't know why the UK weather forecasters bother with long range forecasts and predictions. They often don't get it right the day before, let alone weeks or months in advance!

message 2780: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sounds like ours Lisa. They tell you something, but 2 hours later it's completely different. The benefit to Aus, is that everyone expects the unexpected. It's just the nature of our weather beast.

Maybe the rest of the world is finally catching our bug?

I wondered if anyone on here liked Motorhead. I personally don't like the music, but Lemmy seemed like a nice guy, well according to so many twitter comments and the DVDs I've seen. And the BF is a big Motorhead fan so it was sad. He lived a good long life, and kept rocking until the end. We watched his last concert and it was really sad to hear 'Ace of Spades', as you could tell he was really struggling, I couldn't make out a lot of the words. It's crazy the prognosis gave him 2-6 months and in 2 days he passed =[ It's sad cuz there is only 1 original surviving member left now. I'm anxious about the other older bands now; Saxon, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth etc =[

Lemmy will be missed

message 2782: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments It has been ridiculously warm in Mississippi this year too. Christmas weekend had temps in the upper 70's F (mid 20's C). It has gotten a little cooler the past couple of days, highs in the upper 40's to low 50's (5-10 degrees C). And as usual when the weather flip flops like this, I'm having sinus troubles and a sore throat.

re: Whole30 Diet - I really like some of the ideas I read about on the links that Sandra shared yesterday. It is definitely a good way to reset your system and find out how different food groups affect your body. A lot of the philosophies I read about makes it sound like it would be a really good diet for people with an unhealthy relationship with food (emotional eaters, constant grazers, etc.).

Since I already know that some of the groups that Whole30 eliminates from your diet are not problems for me, I think I'll stick to my plan of going grain-free. Dairy is not an issue for me and neither are certain sugars (honey and stevia are forbidden on whole30). My grain-free diet eliminates all grains and legumes and focuses on eating real, unprocessed foods, much like the W30.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Just remember everyone that grains and fibre are super important for you gastrointestinal health. Complex fibres are really important to fight against things like bowel cancer (big in my world/life). So while simple carbohydrates aren't great, just make sure you don't cut out too much to keep your bowels healthy. Any diet that cuts out all grains and legumes screams too much/unhealthy/ OTT to me.

message 2784: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I live in Southern California and it has been one of our coldest, wet Winters ever. It seems the world's weather has kind of flip-flopped.

Sharon (missvirginia) | 96 comments The UK isn't that far away from us, but I can't believe the difference in weather we are having.
Yes, it's warm for this time of the year (about 10°C), but most days are full of blue skies and sunshine. :)
I really hope it stays that way so we can enjoy the fireworks.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Rusalka wrote: "Just remember everyone that grains and fibre are super important for you gastrointestinal health. Complex fibres are really important to fight against things like bowel cancer (big in my world/life..."

You are right, Rusalka. That is also why it is so important to research and talk to a medical professional before taking on any major diet changes. A lot of people jump into diets like paleo or atkins or whatever without any thoughts except to lose some pounds and then have side effects like digestion issues (paleo/grain free) or ketoacidosis (low carb/atkins).

For me, grain free helps my digestion, but that is partly because I know to eat plenty of healthy, high fiber fruits, veggies, and nuts instead of bread or rice. Broccoli has about the same amount of fiber as a serving of bran flakes and is the healthier choice for me. I stress for me because everyone is different.

message 2787: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I've been looking at dietary stuff too. It would seem I'm low on iron and possibly b12 according to a recent blood test so I need to up my intake of things rich in these. I need to find some good recipes.

message 2788: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Good point(s), Rusalka. Thanks for noting about the importance of not going too over the top!

A balanced, healthy diet and regular exercise are key, in my opinion any way, to long term good health. But this special Whole30 diest sounds probably okay for the limited amount of time - 30 days - that you do this. The purpose isn't so much to lose weight, as I understand, but to learn more about your body and its response to specific foods, right?

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yikes, lots of posts to catch up on after three days absence! We got the keys to the house and I haven't been home much. But, we're making progress (it is a lot of work though).

I am lactose intolerant. Not very badly, I can handle cookies or cake or chocolate, but not things like ice cream, whipped cream, milk, chocolate milk etc. Luckily there are soy or lactose-free varieties of almost everything, and I have pills I can take when I do eat something with lots of lactose in it, so it's not so hard to live with.

I have never done any of those Whole 30 diets. I have to admit that the things you have to miss in those kind of diets are often the things I like to eat the most, so I don't feel inclined to start ;-)
With regard to diets in order to lose weight, it seems from scientific studies that all diets work (all diets make you cut calories and that's what makes you lose weight), you just have to stick to them. Forever. When you go back to your normal eating patterns, the weight will be back in no time.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It is the FOREVER part that always defeats me, Peggy! The "things to be avoided" are the things I like to eat too. I know I am not allergic nor intolerant, just weak. Probably lazy too, in my doctor's opinion, I am sure.

Congratulations on getting your keys to your new house!

Happy New Year to all the folks down under and where it is my tomorrow already!

Another musical death, the drummer John Bradbury, of The Specials died the same day as Lemmy. That day was a proper knock to the world of music!

NYE tonight. Our original plans have fallen through so we will be having a quiet night in on the boat. Probably going to listen to the Craig Charles (Lister from Red Dwarf) Funk & Soul show on BBC Radio 6. We might play a bit of Backgammon and The Rivals for Catan card game. As well as a few drinks. Although I'm not going to overboard as my stomach is still not right from polishing off the Sloe Gin. Oh yes! I forgot to say that the Sloe Gin was very tasty and I'm wishing I'd made another bottle. Tastes a little like calpol perhaps. Would love to hear what plans you guys have for bringing in the New Year.
