The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes was very good (although there have been mixed reviews, but I liked it alot).

Would you include mental issues as illness? I can think of some where the girl has amnesia, or another mental problem.

Not sure what to suggest as I wasn't that big a fan of this is not a test. this is a survival story - The Raft by S.A. Bodeen and i didn't like this much either so maybe you will like it!
also - After The Virus by Meghan Ciana Doidge

message 324: by Mei (last edited Nov 18, 2013 04:01AM) (new)

Mei (meijey) | 3810 comments Kirstin, I recommend:
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - it's dystopian set in 2044 but people are crazed about the 80s. Their world is set in an online game.
Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson - this is a retelling of Peter Pan. This one's slow pace, though!
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami - this has the same concept as the Hunger Games. High school students kill each other to survive. It's a very long book, by the way, so I hope you can manage to keep your interest going :)

kirstin ✿ (shoutohdoroki) | 290 comments @Mei: Ooooh, your recommendations look awesome! Ready Player One sounds like my type of thing. I'm a gamer myself! ^-^ And Peter Pan's one of my favorite fairytale as a child. I've heard about Battle Royale ever since I've heard about The Hunger Games, but I never really bothered reading it. I'll probably give it a try ;)

message 334: by kirstin ✿ (new)

kirstin ✿ (shoutohdoroki) | 290 comments Naah, I love the 80s! I'm not from that era but I've heard good things about it. In the radios or TVs or whatnot. They say it's the Golden Era or something. Besides, I love retros ;)

Mei (meijey) | 3810 comments Hi, I will be attending a Christmas party and I need a unisex gift. I figured a book would be good to give, but I don't know if they'll like it. Since most of us in my group are boys, it's highly likely I get a guy, so its preferrable if what I'll give is a standalone and a book that for a first time reader, will definitely capture his attention. Can anyone recommend any?

What's the recipient's age?

message 348: by Mei (new)

Mei (meijey) | 3810 comments Oh, that's the problem and surprise. We don't know who we will be exchanging gifts with, but all of us are teenagers. 19 years old is the oldest age we've got. We are only 5 girls so it's most likely that I'll get a guy.

C.I. DeMann this 1st one's a remarkably rich and fun and nerdy and deep novel about superheroes. Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman

this 2nd one's just funny. so, so good. Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett

and this last one completely blew me away. the movie is no comparison. the book is brilliant. World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks
