Connie (sunstormsandthunderclouds) | 3978 comments I read a book from the library years and years ago, but I haven't been able to find it since and I was wondering if you could help!

It's about a girl who's parents died in a car accident and she lives with her older brother but she's heavily into self harm etc and nobody knows and she tries super hard to hide this from people. She ends up falling in love and telling her brother and getting better etc etc

Some points I remember;

-She has ginger hair
-When her and her boy first get together they end up having a conversation about mirrors
-Her brother is lovely
-Her name was maybe Claire???
-I thought the book was called Scarred and had a girl in a yellow dress on the cover but I can't find anything like that??

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments I need some help finding books for two tasks in a Danish reading challenge.

One is a book written by a Swedish author. I know lots, but most are thrillers or crime. I'd like something YA or NA, or maybe kidslit.

The other is a book written under a pseudonym. Again, I'd like kidslit, YA or NA.

I'd recommend the Lemony Snicket books. :) A Series of Unfortunate Events Box The Complete Wreck (Books 1-13) by Lemony Snicket

for the Swedish author: The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson

There are many authors who write under pseudonyms. Try Robert Galbraith aka J.K Rowling or J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts

message 711: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Lisa, oh yeah, Lemony Snicker! I think I'll go with that since it's short :D I've akready read the two other you recommended :)

Fuzaila - I didn't know about Robb/Roberts, thanks for bringing it to my attention :)

message 726: by Joanne (last edited Sep 15, 2019 03:50PM) (new)

Joanne | 17 comments I just looked at your reads for this September and October 2019. Whew! I feel overwhelmed. New here. Can someone help me find a book I'll like? I just finished the Constellation Series by Claudia Gray. Defy the Stars That's the link for the first one. I have been interested in sci fi and fantasy. I like the writing to not be too much about the typical stuff I see often. Sword and sorcerer medieval-ish. Getting bored with that. I want something fresh and interesting. Stories that are taking place in the current day world or near future are good. A world that is easy to understand and doesn't have a lot of difficult names in it. I need something I can get in audio book because I have trouble with my eyes. Here are some of my other favorites. Not all these are YA. I like YA though because by definition it steers away from adult rated content that I don't like.

Anyway, books I liked:

Raising Stony Mayhall
The Great Passage
Ms Ice Sandwich
The Samurai's Garden
Semiosis
Beautiful Creatures
Graceling

Lounis Tiar (lounistiar) The Painted Room by Lounis Tiar

We follow Vanessa's journey, when her symptoms that she tried to ignore lead to a mental health breakdown affecting her life. She escapes in a world between hallucination and realism where Eddie guides her through his paintings

This book deals with some heavy topics in a sensitive yet powerful way.

message 730: by noa🐢 (new)

noa🐢 well unfortunately i don’t think i have any books with someone with ZERO friends but i do have some about someone (who does feel lonely) with very very few friends. does that help you? lmk if you want the titles :)

I haven't read a thousand pieces of you. I could give that a try. Thank you :)

message 739: by fish cat (new)

fish cat | 7 comments Hello? Can you suggest a book where a cliche or trope is turned around unexpectedly? Something like Carry On (Simon Snow), Young Elites, In Other Lands.
Stuff like the protagonist isn't really the hero, they don't fall in love with the love interest, etc.

message 740: by [deleted user] (new)

Elena Granger | 1047 comments I'm also into asian books and if you haven't read already I'll recommend all the Murakami's books. They are just magical!
I've also started some asian series and first books were amazing so far:
The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang is an amazing book loved by so many people and I think you might love it too as it's full of asian culture and it's also a fantasy.
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress, #1) by Julie C. Dao is a palace setting with all the asian magic. It's a bit cruel and has not extremely likable MC but also addictive and pretty good.
The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson it was my 2020 discovery, I had no expectations starting this book but it was so good! All the spiritual magic kinda reminded me of Spirited Away anime (which is my all-time favourite classics).
Shadow of the Fox (Shadow of the Fox, #1) by Julie Kagawa I think it's more on the Japanese side (at least feels like that, it reminded me of the atmosphere in all the Japanese countryside animes.
And those books are on my TBR but I haven't read them yet.
Wicked Fox (Gumiho, #1) by Kat Cho The Empress of Salt and Fortune (The Singing Hills Cycle, #1) by Nghi Vo The Moon in the Palace (Empress of Bright Moon, #1) by Weina Dai Randel Descendant of the Crane by Joan He White Tiger (Dark Heavens, #1) by Kylie Chan

And by war I mean about world war two and that kind of war, so not fantasy and stuff. She also likes it when it is heavy and emotional. Please recommend one if you know a good book that fits this description! :))

Phew that’s a hard one! I have heard of Poppy Day (No Greater Love #1) by Amanda Prowse which is about a woman who’s husband disappears in a war and goes to find him, but I’m not really sure if that’s what you’re looking for.. I don’t really know any other books about war as far as I know, so good luck!
