Yes, I'm from England Kevin. There are some non-Americans out there but America is a big country so I guess they are bound to outnumber us!

Hi, I'm Karin and I lve in London, UK. I read everything and anything (as long as it keeps me entertained :D).
We're definitely an international and inclusive group here and love to hear about where members are around the world!

Thank you :)

I wasn't being that serious. To be honest if I can get my book seen I think it will do better in the USA than the UK. Most of the authors writing similar book to mine are American. British tastes seem to revolve around murder mystery, romance and classics.
I would be interested to hear what American readers think about English thrillers and crime writers. I really enjoy Michael Connelly, Lee Child (English I know but writing American books), Patricia Cornwall, Linda Farstein etc. but I also enjoy Ruth Rendell's Wexford, Reginald Hill's Daziel and Pascoe and P.D. James' Dalgliesh. Do you read a lot of English novels? How do you feel they differ to American novels in the same genre?
I probably read more British than American. (I'm American.) It may be because I was exposed to a lot of Mystery! and Masterpiece Theater when young. However, I find them to be a little more layered. I like all the authors you mentioned (except Patricia Cornwell). I especially love D&P.
Yes Reginald Hill is a favourite of mine although his stories sometimes end with a real life type ending i.e. Not neatly tied up with good overcoming evil. I am a sucker for a satisfactory ending where the mystery, case or whatever is resolved and the main characters are happy! I do however find his characters real - warts and all. What is it you don't like about Patricia Cornwall?
Oh, I think she went off the rails a while back. Medical Examiners just do not go chasing off - gun in hand - after the killer.
I have not been hanging out with my GR family as much since Thanksgiving only because I have been working LONG hours. Juveniles continue to commit crimes during the holidays!!! Anyway, I always like to welcome new members so... Welcome Brenda, Liah, Gilli, Kevin, Julia, Karin and Ro. I think that is everyone since I posted last.I am from the U.S. and read authors from all over the world but most of my favorite authors are from either UK or Scandinavian countries. It's like Kirsten said, their writing is a little more layered and usually much darker.
Welcome Romina and anyone else I may have missed.I don't generally pay a lot of attention to where a writer is from so long as I enjoy the book. The only way I my (typically) note where a writer is from is where the story is placed...London, Berlin, Podunk, wherever.

I don't either but 'cause I'm in Europe I tend to relate more to European authors. Having said that Stephen King is my all time fave followed closely by David Sedaris. My books are also set in Europe in the 17th century as that's my education background.
Kirsten, yes I was surprised at some of the things that Medical Examiners seemed to get up to in Patricia Cornwall's books but being British I could suspend disbelief by thinking ' that must be how it happens in America. M.E.s go out detecting.

I'm diverse, not preferring one over the other.

Very interesting points. I think British and American writing differ also in 'big'.
You don't get many British writers writing save-the-world-from-extinction kind of stories.
I read more action thrillers than mysteries so that observation is more relevant to thrillers.
Mystery wise, I really don't find a lot of difference in layers either side of the Atlantic.

Hi everyone. This is such a great and welcoming group. I can't believe it's taken me this long to find Goodreads! (Maybe it was those 20+ years overseas.) I love thrillers and can devour one in a weekend. Easy.
I just published my debut novel. It's a mix between a spy thriller and a moody suspense, centered around a 20 year (wink wink) veteran of the CIA who is returning home. She is asked by her friends to 'take down' the gun lobby so that new legislation can finally pass. And away she goes. Meanwhile, a likable ATF agent and her timid Agency handler are both closing in on her trail. There is also a romantic arc (but no spoilers.)
It took me a year to write and is based on extensive research re: the gun industry and lobby and 'ripped from the headlines' scenarios. I wanted the fiction to be infinitely believable.
Will be posting the new release giveaway tmrw.
Thanks for being such a warm and welcoming group! I am already picking up recommendations for thrillers to read.

Hi, My name is Ken and I live in New Richmond, Wisconsin. I am the proud father of two active-duty U.S. Marine sons and one amazing daughter. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management and have worked for over 25 years in manufacturing. In my spare time, I enjoy many things including reading (mostly fiction thrillers and New Age books). I enjoy writing thriller and YA novels and have just Indie published my first novel, Savages and Saviors. I am a lover of life, people, and adventure, who is eternally grateful for the abundance I have found within our universe.
Hi, Ken! I work for the state and the employment office. My dad worked for a steel mill for 24 years, 3 months shy of full retirement when it went overseas, and he lost all of his retirement, so I understand what tough work Manufacturing can be. Congratulations on your amazing children, I know you are so very proud! I will tell you the same thing I told H.N. I hope you enjoy your time here! I hope their holidays wherever they may be are safe and blessed.
