Jeff I'm the only person who voted for The March by E.L. Doctorow?

Looks like it. You are probably the only one who read it. My husband could vote for more on this list than I can.

message 4: by David (new)

David Vanness Any person with any Civil War leanings should read. It's a historical read of events occuring in & around MO. & their results.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You can add books to the list up where it says "all votes/add books to this list," if you haven't already.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads What is, RJ?

message 7: by Susan (new)

Susan Need to remove Doctor Zhivago - #94 - that is not a novel about the US Civil War.

Also need to remove - #68 The English Civil Wars, 1640 1660
by Blair Worden -again not about the US Civil War

message 8: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Thanks Susan, changes made.

Diane Emery Jeff wrote: "I'm the only person who voted for The March by E.L. Doctorow?"

I didn't vote on this list, but The March is one of if not the best CIvil War novels written. So, Jeff, you are right on !!!

Mind Bird Jeff wrote: "I'm the only person who voted for The March by E.L. Doctorow?"

Nope. But it's not as good as RAGTIME, which is one of the greatest of books.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Not a Civil War setting, though.

Mind Bird Susanna wrote: "Not a Civil War setting, though."

True, true. Best CW-era books I've read are "Andersonville," and "Cold Mountain," but I have high expectations for the Shaara books.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The Killer Angels is certainly excellent.

message 14: by Mind (last edited Jul 20, 2013 08:46PM) (new)

Mind Bird The movie based on it, "Gettysburg," was so good I watched it twice in a row.

Loved Cold Mountain, but I had trouble getting through Andersonville. So much that I put it down. Maybe I should give it another try.

message 16: by Diane (new)

Diane Emery No. I had just finished " the pale king " by David Foster Wallace , so maybe I was a bit tired. I'm certainly willing to give Andersonville another go.

message 17: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Glave No Greater Glory by Cindy Nord NO GREATER GLORY is an epic Civil War historical romance on par with GWTW or North & South. An incredible story, as well as excellent historical detailing and insight into the eastern theatre of the war in Virginia. For nearly a full year, this book was the #1 Civil War Romance at Amazon. All the 5-star reviews are correct -- I couldn't put this one down. ~ Jeremy Glave

Donna Davis Gone: #272, The Spanish Civil War. Thread clearly states it is the American Civil War, leading up to and from. I question the book on Freedom Summer that appears on page 4. I understand the thinking--that the Civil Rights movement had its roots in slavery--but if we open that door, a lot more can come in and dilute the thread.

On the other hand, I added WEB DuBois's biography of John Brown as my first choice. Brown didn't live to see the Civil War, but his entire life was focused on freeing slaves; he was a big part of the drumroll leading into the war.

If you are interested in the life of John Brown, you might try The Good Lord Bird by James McBride. It illustrates beautifully his role in the lead up to the Civil War.

Thanks; I will add that to my to-read shelf.

Lobstergirl Title change reverted.

message 30: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis Lobstergirl wrote: "Title change reverted."

Thank you! I recently learned there is a cowboy librarian out there changing just about anything she feels like changing. *Shudder* Thank you for your eagle eyes and your work ethic, Lob.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Should we flag those? I'm inclined not to, because I don't think it's against policy. It is annoying, however.

message 32: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Does flagging work? I don't know if it's against the "rules" to change a title in listopia. More likely staff doesn't care about such low level stuff. Maybe just a private message to the offender?

message 33: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis Someone told me that an individual that was doing these things had in fact been reported, and that she has lost her librarian privileges. Possibly it is the same person that did this. Let us hope there's not more than one of them running around changing essential list components at whim. And now I wish I could recall who it was that shared this information; it was within the last week, that much I know. Knock wood.

message 34: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I just checked the profile of this particular person and she's still a librarian. I don't think it's something she should lose her librarian status over, she just needs to be told to stop.

message 35: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis Lobstergirl wrote: "I just checked the profile of this particular person and she's still a librarian. I don't think it's something she should lose her librarian status over, she just needs to be told to stop."

How does one go about that, then?

message 36: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl At the top of her profile, click on "More" - dropdown box, select "Message."

message 37: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl What page is it on? If you want a book removed, please mention the page - otherwise a librarian has to go through all the pages of the list.
