Thanks! Yeah, I like to see what's beyond the /main/ mainstream. I wanted a list where people wouldn't be raving about the stuff everyone and its dog have heard of already.

Why is hunger games on this list? It's a great book, but its not fantasy. And nether is Murder on the Orient Express

I've read that one, and it certainly isn't fantasy. Not familiar with Hunger Games, so I left it.

Nice list, Artemis foul is where it should be, overall the fantasy list is awesome.

I would argue that The Hunger Games still counts as fantasy. Sure it takes place in the future and sure it mentions some futuristic tech but the way it is written is more in line with my general idea of fantasy. Since that won't count for much, I would point out that the FOCUS is not at all the future, it's the dystopia and the struggle against it that the author happens to set in the future (sort of as a "this could happen if we don't pay attention" food for thought. The characters fight a lot in gladiatorial battles and even use "old" weaponry for most of the time.
I guess I would agree with Mark. It is not really either, but unless you want to do away with the hordes of people that will vote for it (and I did too), you did good to keep it on the list.

In general I don't like to put the MANY books I read in order so I don't know if I even agree with my votes. :\

DUNE is DEFINITELY sci-fi. Get it off this list. Great book, though

Finally, why ever did you say no religious books. That rather biased in my opinion. Even if I wasn't (which I am) I would hope I would grant that fantasy books with a religious side can be just as good or well-written. I haven't read it but I've heard that The Golden Compass is quite anti-religious so shouldn't it be removed on this basis, too? Just something to think about.

Hmm. By no religious books, I pretty much just meant texts that are commonly used by religions. I added that in so that people wouldn't put them in in order to mock them (by calling them fantasy). You're free to put in real fantasy with religious elements.

Oh, and a note about the books you suggested I take off, is it actually possible for me to take them off? That would be great to know.

And Mark, if you like fantasy novels, you should try L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluse series. It started in 1991 but went on into the 2000s. Less "trendy", though. I liked them a lot. Also, have you read the Terry Brookes novels that the first comment mentioned? The first seemed very Lord of the Rings-esque to me but the others (and the first still) are pretty good. And it has to be older because my mom read them in college (I'm 17) and the copies in our library are in great disrepair.

A librarian on Goodreads is someone who has read and agreed to a bunch of rules and has been granted the power to add and edit extra content that normal users can't. For instance, librarians can add extra editions of books that are missing or add new books altogether . It's pretty easy to become one, though, as long as you're willing to read all the initial stuff and contact Goodreads to ask to become one (unless the policy has changed recently).

I was very happy to find some Dave Duncan on the list. I had no idea how little known he was until I came here - He's been one of my favourite authors since I read "the reluctant swordsman" in the 90s and fell in love with his witty writing and his aproach to magic.

I'm not sure why The Hunger Games is #3 - it's Sci-Fi. Although they are similar, there is still a gap that separtates them! The Hunger Games is defintely not a fantasy - it is a 'futuristic dystopian sci-fi thriller romance'. :Nerd: 8-|

Dune and the Hunger Games, as have been said before, are not fantasy. It doesn't matter the style they are written or what they evoke. They use science instead of magic, and thus they are science fiction. Dune does have so elements that might be considered magical, but they are explained through genetics and a drug.

Wow. It's been a long time, and people are still liking this list; so, I came back and checked it out today. Lots of books (and they mostly appear to be on-topic)! Good job, everyone. Apparently, Dune was *still* on the list, however (so, I took it off; that seems unlike me to have left it on). Yes, I know it's not fantasy. :) And, apparently I need to change my own votes (because when years pass, opinions, feelings, and morals can change). I changed my votes, but they're not really in order.
