October 2024 Word of the Month: Celebrating 200 Years of RSPCA / KITTENSSince 1824, the RSPCA has worked to prevent cruelty, promote kindness towards, and reduce the suffering of animals. Their vision is of a caring world in which all animals are respected and treated with compassion.
Tis the Season… for Kittens!
In 2022-23, RSPCA Australia received 33,747 cats, almost 40% of all animals, and approximately 2/3 of these were kittens.
Unfortunately, 18.44% of these felines had to be euthanased; however, a staggering 64.41% were rehomed - go RSCPA & all the adopters!
Cats start breeding when the days start getting longer, usually around August here in the southern hemisphere, and they continue to breed throughout spring and summer. This means kittens are starting to arrive in our shelters now by the hundreds.
A queen (female cat) can start to breed from as young as 4 months of age and can produce up to two litters every season. That can quickly add up to a lot of cats – in just two years, a single pair of undesexed cats could could become 50 cats. They and their litters could go on to produce up to 20,000 more cats in just two years.
Kitten season can be a stressful time for your cat. A queen in season is a handful. They become agitated, roll on the ground, rub against everything and yowl repeatedly, and loudly! They also become desperate to get outside, especially at night.
Your undesexed tomcat will also become agitated, might spray urine and will also be desperate to get outside and find the ladies. Toms will often get into fights and can sustain terrible injuries or contract diseases like feline immunodeficiency virus (Feline AIDS). They are also more likely to roam and be injured or killed on the road.
All this cat action in the neighbourhood can also be very unsettling for your desexed cat and can put them at risk of being injured, especially if they roam away from home.
RSPCA works with communities all over the country to improve access to desexing so that fewer kittens find themselves without a home to go to. The relatively low cost of preventing cats from producing so many unwanted offspring far outweighs the cost to the community of caring for kittens in shelters. With community programs offering discounted or subsidised desexing, it’s never been easier for people to stop the cycle of unwanted cats and kittens.
