973201 December 2024 Word of the Month: Celebrating 200 Years of RSPCA / CHRISTMAS

Since 1824, the RSPCA has worked to prevent cruelty, promote kindness towards, and reduce the suffering of animals. Their vision is of a caring world in which all animals are respected and treated with compassion.

🎁🎁 Pets are for life, not just for Christmas 🎁🎁

Surprising someone with a pet as a gift is not always the best idea. With cats and dogs living up to 20 years old and some birds up to 80, you wouldn't want to spring this level of responsibility on anyone, especially if they are not emotionally or financially ready.

There is a yearly increase in the number of pets surrendered to shelters after Christmas. Don't gift animals this festive season, pets can't be exchanged or returned like socks.

If a pet is decided upon, adopt not shop this holiday season.

As well as being wonderful new furry family members, adopting a pet has the added benefit of reducing the burden on shelters and, even better, helps lower euthanasia rates.

Giving an animal a second chance at a forever home is one of the most wonderful and rewarding things someone can do. Contact your local council pound, animal shelter or rehoming organisation to find out more.

Along with the ‘adopt not shop’ message, government & animal welfare associations are reminding pet owners of the three easy steps of responsible pet ownership – microchipping, desexing and registering their pet.

Keep your pet safe over Christmas

Christmas is a time of cheer for humans. But for pets, it can mean a time of change. There will be more noises and visitors, as well as new objects and smells.

Decorations and presents all pose a risk if they are consumed, keep them out of reach. Things such as candy canes & chocolate, sparkly & breakable items, ribbons & tinsel, can be dangerous for your pet, & may cause indigestion, lacerations or intestinal obstruction (a surgical emergency).

Human foods are not a treat for pets. Many sweet treats are toxic for pets, and can even be fatal. This includes: chocolate, Christmas pudding, currants, grapes, lollies (candy), raisins & sugar-free sweet products.

Christmas Day tips
Some suggestions to keep your pet healthy and happy on Christmas Day:

* Create a calm, quiet spot for your pet away from the noise
* Exercise your pet before any guests arrive
* Keep Christmas flowers and plants out of your pet’s reach
* Quickly clean up any bows, plastic and ribbons so there’s no chance of pets swallowing them by mistake
