7638 I am still working my way through The Farmer's Daughter and I am NOT loving it. Has anyone else read Jim Harrison? I love the titles he uses, but I'm struggling to find what's so fabulous about the writing. Thoughts?

7638 I agree with Garlan and Enders Game - it's pretty amazing. And I honestly was very disappointed in Memiors of a Geisha.

7638 He did dislocate his shoulder at work. It's probably his 5th or 6th injury there. It's just not a great place, I believe we can make this work, it's just hard for Mike to think it's OK, I think a lot because of the "man" thing...it's more acceptable for it to be the mom who stays home, somehow.

7638 I went into my profile and it explains how the recommendations work there - it'll recommend based on each shelf you have, so it works best for lots of shelves, and you can uncheck a shelf that you don't want recs on - I have an "abandoned" shelf and a "later" shelf and I don't want to see what's recommended based on those. I am creating more specific shelves and then it creats a list of recommendations based on that shelf, so I've got an "Amazing" shelf for the books that have blown me away, a "Candy" shelf with my fluffy reads, etc. :)

7638 I started The Farmer's Daughter by Jim Harrison for a Hive challenge last night and got thru the first of the novellas, but I was a little disturbed by it. There was a scene of sexual abuse that was just raw, and then the romance aspects were pretty grim as well. The story is set in Montana - just one state over from me, but apparently the state is it's own universe.

Sounds like some interesting books!!!

7638 I think several of my random "why did I pick this?" were from giveaways I entered. I agree with Stephanie, that I value the Bees opinions a lot, it should almost be it's own category on my TBR.

7638 Reviewing the TBR and editing is probably a good idea, Stephanie. I should try doing that 1/year or so.

7638 Yes, I need to create a "5 star reads" shelf for myself and see what that inspires. :)
7638 Oh, I loved The Witching Hour - and all the Mayfair Witches books...I loaned it to someone and never saw it again though.

7638 Asking for thoughts/support....

We're seriously considering a move to a 1 income household (mine) so Mike can pursue his painting and leave a job that makes him miserable. I think we can do this...but I know some of you have made a similar move and am looking for thoughts/ideas on how you made the transition work.

(Tami, if you read this, shush, please. It's not family news yet, but this is sort of my "safe" place for venting.)
7638 I finished this one up today - I really enjoyed it, and found myself really angry with the cousin Charles. What a jerk...

I would have loved an epilogue on this one.

7638 The transition is hard - Kasia had some bumps in K too. :( It's a huge jump to be a big kid in school!

7638 Your beads are so beautiful! I love how you photographed the green ones in all different lights and they looked different in each one. You're very talented.

7638 I agree, we're in a cycle of extremes for sure. It seems that huge disasters are the norm more than the exception anymore.

7638 It sounds like your friend is awfully lucky to have you be her sub!

Question - we're already thinking of Christmas at our house, have you gotten Delaney any of the AG furniture? Julie's bed would match Kasia's room, and she has Julie...and I'm debating, but it's awfully pricey if it's not well-made. Thoughts?

7638 I'm making good progress on Bridge of Sighs by Richard Russo - I really like it so far, Russo can just pull me into his tales so well.

I've also got The Farmer's Daughter by Jim Harrison on the nightstand and ready to go for a Hive task, I'm excited to read it!

March by Geraldine Brooks and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Shirley Jackson I'm making slower progress on. I find it a little funny it's the shorter ones I'm reading more slowly...
