I have read the Left Behind series, and I can't possibly imagine Tom Perrota writing ANYTHING like it...so I'll have to get my hands on this soon and check it out. I've got a Nick Hornby in the queue next.

Yeah, I was wrong, I had a little over 100 pages left. And I'm enjoying them a lot (I lean a bit to the left, and this part panders to my way of thinking)

I too feel like some of this is re-hashed, particularily from A Widow for One Year by John Irving (which is my favorite) but it didn't borrow the part I love, somehow. If the last part keeps going, I'll be in the 3 1/2 category too.

@KrisT - I don't think I could have gotten through it on audio. I've only got 50 pages or so left and I just don't care enough. A typical Irving I would have stayed up to finish last night with only 50 pages left. Oh well...

7638 I'm about 2/3 of the way through Last Night in Twisted River and so far I'm a bit disappointed. I think it's because I really love John Irving, and so far this one is falling flat for me. I expect more...still, 1/3 of the book can pull the whole works together and make me love it, so I'm hoping I will still learn to love it.

I'm excited to read this one - as well as The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta - two authors I really enjoy!

I had to start The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan yesterday. My co-worker's son loaned me his copy of the book, but it evidently pained him to part with it, so his mom promised I'd read it fast. I'm hoping to have it back to him on Monday. I'm really loving this new installment. It's nice to see Percy again.

7638 Tara, that's hilarious. And frightening. Boys don't learn to think when they grow up either, do they?

7638 I'm soooooooooo frustrated...my family has conspired against me all day. Every time I've sat down with a book, someone needs me, or they just come sit and talk to me while I'm trying to read. now, I do love that my children and husband like me enough to want to chat, but really? Can't I read a couple pages? Please????

7638 Congratulations on the new job! And good luck with the mom/work/you balance. It's a challenge I struggle with too.

I really love John Irving, but I haven't read that one either. Last Night in Twisted River is next on my tbr for a challenge too.

7638 Good for you!!! Congratulations!!!!!

(and I hear you on the classics. I did Anna Karenina so far in 2011 that's it. I was going to do better too!)

7638 Thanks Tara, I added that to my TBR. I DID just love A Fortunate Age A Novel by Joanna Smith Rakoff - so I'm un-slumping. :) I'm about halfway through Watership Down by Richard Adams and getting more into it, but I think it would be more fun as a team read. I'm semi working on Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë because that's on my phone's Kindle app, so it's there for my 5 minutes here and there when I need a book.

Kasia is at the dentist having fillings, and I'm rather a wreck over it. I HATE the dentist (read, am terrified of it) so Mike has to take the kids and I pretty much need a tranquilizer to get there myself. So, I'm in knots waiting for her to get home, but have to not spaz at her when she does. maybe I need a tranquilizer now?

With a good voice cast, I can see Mudbound being a great audiobook.

7638 I just finished A Fortunate Age A Novel by Joanna Smith Rakoff and LOVED it. I'm not sure if this is one that you have to be the right demographic for - the reviews are certainly all over and it's not rated very well here on GR, but I really enjoyed it. The characters were well-drawn, their relationships utterly believable, and the time frame from 1998 - 2004 (or so) was my time in college/grad school and my happy twenties, so I could relate very closely to the characters and their frames of reference. I too had a "group" Mine was comprised of 2 women and 3 men (originally 4 women and 3 men, but of course inter-dating messed with the dynamic) but the 5 of us are still close, and the relationships, shifting from young colleges students to young marrieds was so well done...I just really enjoyed this book. I now want to call my boys and go hug my girls and have a reunion!

7638 I drank mine as we shopped at Target. It was just the boost I needed. I'd been unhappily yanked from my book to go shopping.

7638 So, I ordered a ginormous Salted Caramel Mocha at Starbucks today and thought of you. Is it strange that I think of my "book friend" when we've never actually met? :)

7638 I started A Fortunate Age A Novel by Joanna Smith Rakoff last night and am only a few chapters in, but am REALLY enjoying it so far. The prose is great, and the characters are already well drawn.

7638 Mike's had the conversation with the assistant store manager, and he seemed open to the idea of a new position being created for an Inventory Controller. Here's hoping the folks up the chain of command agree!

I'm home with sick Kasia today - our rooms are on different levels of the house, and I could hear her couthing at midnight, and this morning she was droopy eyed and tired, with a raspy cough. She's not running a temp, but I figured a day of resting should help her fight whatever is brewing. And, I've got a pot of duck soup started on the stove as well. :)

I'm looking for the latest book to fall in love with. So far nothing's really "wowed" me, although Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King was very enjoyable for me as a King fan. I'm still working on Boneshaker (The Clockwork Century, #1) by Cherie Priest , which is fairly well written, but has virtually no character development at all. I'm just reading through one action scene after another. I'm over 1/2 done, and I HAVE to finish it as Mike loved it and I NEVER read anything he recommends. It's too bad that the few books he reads are so un-enjoyable for me. :?

7638 Thanks guys! :) I went to the assembly today and Gabe was recognized in front of all of the students in his school for his act of generosity. He was very excited, and the other children were very supportive and congratulatory of him. Kasia became very overwhelmed at all the kids applauding for her brother and sobbed...and sobbed! I'm a proud Mama today.

7638 I too love his connections - lots of things tie to The Dark Tower Series Collection: Gunslinger, Drawing of the Three, Waste Lands, Wizard and Glass, Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, the Dark Tower as well as the Flagg character. I think The Tommyknockers references It, and I know Insomnia also was tied to other books. He even has the "Low Men" from Hearts in Atlantis in UR....

Yeah, I'm a geek...

7638 I started Watership Down last night - primarily due to Elizabeth's high recommendation. I'm not very far into it, but enjoying it so far.

I'm close to halfway through Boneshaker and do hope that it moves along soon. It's a lot of action, but I don't feel like I'm really getting anywhere. It's written fairly well though, so I'll keep plugging along.
