7638 I have this one - I have to move it into my active piles, especially since it seems like such a quick read.

7638 Amy - re-reading might be just what's required, because nothing is hitting the mark right now...

7638 Oh - digging deep for old and good...

Ishmael An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit by Daniel Quinn

Read this my freshman year, and would love to re-read!

7638 It's in my best books I've ever read list. Seriously amazing.

7638 When I was a kid I remember watching The Last Picture Show, and it became a running joke in our family as the worst movie we'd ever seen. I'm sort of intrigued at the thought of reading it.

7638 Adonica, you are SUCH a show off!

7638 I'm now at 11 of 12!!!! Loving most of my list so far - I didn't realize that I was quite this far, but I will take it!
7638 I started this week - I like it so far - I think the tone of the author is real, and shows what an ass he was. Clearly since he's got this book thing going he must reform. :)

7638 I totally agree about the cover turn off. I hate the cover. Even now, after I get it, after I love the book SO MUCH - I hate that picture. But I understand why the author does it, how uncomfortable she wants us to be. It hurts to love something that embodies suffering to this extent. It's a painfully, brutally beautiful book. I know it's a loud statement of a book cover- but it is also brave of her not to pull away from that, and to fight for it.
The Enchanted (32 new)

7638 1. The novel opens with the line, "This is an enchanted place. Others don't see it but I do." The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word "enchant" as, "to attract and hold the attention of (someone) by being interesting, pretty, etc.; to put a magic spell on (someone or something)." Why does the narrator call this place enchanted? What beauty does he find in his surroundings that others do not? What does this tell us about the narrator?

So - I do feel this was magical - in a way it is a bit like The Green Mile - though Arden is much less compelling than Coffey - and yet...there is magic. There is the beautiful sense of place, and also there is a reverence for books that is also lovely. I think it was an enchanted read.

7638 I figured if Adonica hated it, I don't even have to try.

7638 FOR REAL. I just told Amy, this one makes me want to scream to the world - HOLY SHIT, READ THIS NOW!!!!!

This book is everything that fiction and novels should be - it's challenging and hard and beautiful and compelling and fantastic.

Please, don't wait. Go buy it. This author deserves the love.

7638 It's classified as sci fi??? That's weird to me.
7638 I love beautiful quotes, and I am SO lazy about actually writing them down, but I totally should. I hope that I manage to be inspired to do so...

7638 I also finished Finders Keepers (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #2) by Stephen King - loved this one. I'm such a huge fan of Stephen King, but I also find myself being really picky with any errors in his books. I feel like he and his editors should be above that...but another gripping story - and it's even got a *little* supernatural in it!

I am currently reading Epitaph, by Mary Doria Russell (the link won't work for some reason) and I'm plowing through this one as well. I LOVE her writing. I'm still a bit confused as to why the shootout at the O.K. Corral was such a big deal in history, but I love her story telling.

7638 I've read a lot in the past few weeks. I devoured the MaddAddam series Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam, #1) by Margaret Atwood MaddAddam (MaddAddam, #3) by Margaret Atwood The Year of the Flood (MaddAddam, #2) by Margaret Atwood

I LOVED this series. It's another dystopian world, but in this one another race that's been designed to be better than humans (and much more innocent) is in the mix. It's an AMAZING trilogy, and I've totally rediscovered Margaret Atwood now because of it. I had read a few of her books in grad school, but I'm not sure if I just prefer the MaddAddam trilogy or if I needed a few more years on me to really enjoy her writing.

7638 Garlan wrote: "I just picked up Rock with Wings (Navajo Mysteries, #20) by Anne Hillerman by Anne Hillerman. She is the daughter of Tony Hillerman, and is continuing his series with the Navajo tribal police featuring Joe Leaphorn, J..."

That sounds so familiar - I wonder if I have read one of those books along the way.
7638 Petra sent it to me, so if after I finish it anyone else wants to try it, I'll send it on!
