7638 I love this exchange too! It's usually the best gift I receive.

7638 Hello my fellow Bees!

Labor Day is past, my daughter is obsessing about her Halloween costume and it is time again to focus on giving and receiving a bookish gift.

For any who are new since last year here's how we roll -

All are welcome to sign up, US, Canadian, French & Australian (I think I've covered our countries in this, but any others too!) You may get an international Bee. You may receive a gift from a different country. Keep this in mind when figuring mailing times.

You give and you receive a package with requested books and any additional items you care to send.

Participants sign up in this thread and list the books they'd love to see under their tree or on their e-reader. Please specify the formats you prefer (HC, TPB, MMPB, if used is OK, Nook, Kindle etc)

PM me with your real name, address and what your account info is for gifting of eBooks if you've specified you want Kindle/Nook/iBook/Audible etc.

We open on Boxing Day. I'm going to be honest - this many years in I don't remember who has given to whom, so you may have a repeat. Please let me know of any issues, etc. Please also be aware, that I do know who has been a Bad Santa in the past. I hate saying this, but I do feel I must. So, play nice or don't play at all.

Sign up will be open through October 11, and I'll work to assign shortly after.

Happy wishing, hoping and dreaming bookish dreams my friends!

7638 I have read The Beet Queen and The Bingo Palace. They both seed too much like work. Not very enjoyable IMO.

And so you have written, it was available to borrow on my library site, so it's now on my Kindle!!! Thanks for the recommendation.

7638 This is sitting on my real shelves, just waiting for this nudge!!! Will get it in soon.

7638 I read it in an afternoon when I saw it was on our up-coming list and it was available from the library. It is a very sweet book, and is a powerful look at how we treat animals, and how change can be made.

7638 My favorite feature on the app is in the bookstore so I can review my lists. :) But it's not fantastic for group participation at all!

7638 Love this idea! I've read lots of good books this year!

Broken Pieces by Rachel Thompson Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara Slam by Nick Hornby The Great Santini by Pat Conroy Epitaph by Mary Doria Russell Finders Keepers (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #2) by Stephen King The MaddAddam Trilogy Oryx and Crake; The Year of the Flood; MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood The Martian by Andy Weir Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel Mad River (Virgil Flowers, #6) by John Sandford Z A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler Lexicon by Max Barry The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff

There have been a lot this year - thinking why, I realize that I've been a bit more mindful of the books I've chosen and looked to see what my Bees have thought, their ratings or they are favorite authors.

7638 I would like to like her writing...but I just haven't loved anything I've read by Erdrich since Love Medicine.

7638 As much as I love my GR app, the full site is just better. I just need to log on more too, rather than checking my phone in the break room at work!

7638 I love the idea of questions thread, and I like the idea of books that are different "levels" Maybe one of the books we select can be a discussion book, others less structured? I think of the ones we typically choose, there is usually one that stands out as having more potential for discussion (like A Little Life, for example) vs The Forgotten Garden)

I really like the idea of the person nominating it to give a little blurb about why they love it or why they are interested in reading it. Kind of like when you're hosting the club meeting. :)

7638 I'm a terrible poster in the summer - I read, but just don't get in here much to post. Fall and winter I'm a Bee-addict. I would really love it if there were some reminder/PM about polls going up. I've missed them for about the last 12 months - and I do check in daily to read threads, but the app is set up so it only alerts me if threads I've already read are active, not if new ones are posted. So an in-box with the polls would be super helpful.

7638 Looks like B&N is pretty excited about their new nook tablet. Anyone getting one/have one? I'm always excited about new tech.

7638 I loved both Doc and Epitaph - Russell is just an amazing author.

7638 I read Armada by Ernest Cline and really liked it, but it doesn't compare to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline IMO. However, I think Armada will be enjoyed more by some of the younger kids not quite as immersed in 80's pop culture as some of us (more mature?) readers.

I've read a few NetGalley books this month - Terms by Ben Lyle - this is going to be released in September I think - it was a well-done story that focuses on 12 year old boy in boarding school - there is a lot of angst, misunderstanding and grandiose thinking that really portrays the age well. It's not a happy read - I kept thinking in my head it was a grey book. That's the color I saw in my head when I pictured any of the scenes.

Dead in the Water by Peter Tickler - private eye detective novel, which was a bit like the Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith. I liked it.

I also caught up on the last two books in Karen Monings Fever series - Iced (Fever, #6) by Karen Marie Moning and Burned (Fever, #7) by Karen Marie Moning - love these books. Total brain candy.

I love Willa Cather's work - I haven't read it since grad school, when I took a course called Cather and Wharton - it was so interesting to compare these two contemporary women authors who wrote about such completely different societies.

I'm a fan of Kate Morton's books too. They are good, engaging and have some really interesting settings.

7638 Love my Bees.

I adore August's middle name. Kasia chose it, and I think it's beautiful on so many levels.

I thought we had a Bee Blog thread but I couldn't find it. Please, remind me if I've lost it.

7638 Hello my Bees -

Plugging along, nearly through another summer and (not) ready for the kids to start school next week.

I've been having a good summer of reading, hanging with my family and trying to figure out some sort of balance.

We managed to get another cat. We have 4 now. Good grief. Her name is August Elizabeth - she IS named after August in Wonder so at least there is something bookish with this baby. My husband and daughter are totally responsible for this latest addition, but she IS cute and sweet and fantastic.

I did actually start a blog, if any of you are interested. I'm still sort of playing around, but it's fun.
