7638 I started this one, but I just didn't like it. Got about a third through, but I wasn't reading very quickly so the library loan expired and I just didn't care. Not a book I cared for.

7638 I really liked this one too - I wonder if there's maybe a difference in the total decay of "normalcy" between the larger cities and the smaller ones, Elizabeth. I live in such a rural area that's used to self-sufficiency, so I guess I can sort of see people who are left here functioning longer and more easily.

7638 I also liked this one - the concept seemed kind of bizarre, but the story, the characters and plot were all enjoyable. It was a different concept too, which I like. It's fun when there is something so original.

That's wonderful news, and a Baby-moon is a great idea. I'm so happy for you!

7638 I was at the HPB store at Plano and nearly cried...it's the same size as our local b&n.

7638 Just finished the most recent Prey novel - Gathering Prey - another good one! Rumor has it that Sandford is talking retirement. I'll really miss him if he's not publishing any more new books, but I guess there are probably close to 40 to re-read. Love him.

7638 I finished The House at Riverton tonight, which was a Bee book from 2010 but I couldn't find the thread for it. I thought it was quite good, a fun gothic-style mystery but it was able to hold a few secrets for me through the end. (I did find a good deal rather predictable, but that's all right) I enjoyed it quite a lot!

I have a few books to finish - for some reason I'm finding Those Who Save Us hard to keep going with. I don't know if I've read too many books in that era that I just don't want to keep going, or what. It's fine, I don't dislike the story or writing at all. I just don't seem to care if I get back to it.

Are you enjoying it? I have debated picking this one up.
7638 I don't think you were misreading it Angela - if you have an area that's densely populated with the people of the same faith, they are going to become a voting block and a good-old-boys network is more likely to appear in local law enforcement. If your loyalty is to the prophet first and your country second, then it's easy to see how the police in one of those communities dominated by the FLDS could devolve into a prison without bars.

7638 I read Beloved in college too, and found it soul crushing. I do t know that I had enough of life to prepare me for that kind of brutal honesty. I'd be interested in looking at her work with older eyes.

7638 A friend sent me a text saying Gil died on her birthday...I was so confused because he was alive thru the whole series. She meant the actor. Very sad.

7638 I finished today and did really like it - I gave it 5 stars. I thought the narration was fabulous, loved the opening line and it kept me reading.

I was disturbed to some point at the extent to which the world spends billions of dollars to save a man - basically because it's politically compelling. It's actually something I could see happening. NASA talks about rallying Congress for more funds...and you know this isn't an idealized society where there is no more starvation or poverty. But billions of dollars for one guy.

The fact that I was thinking about this and it makes me find the book that much more compelling, because if it could make me mad about that, I was totally sucked in.

I tried The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and just couldn't get into it. But the descriptions of his multi-layered writing are pulling me back. I now want to try picking up another one of his books!
