Haven't picked this one today, I finished another book I was struggling with.

I agree with you Jen on most things. I like the mythology and the mermaids.. still don't know who Issa is but hopefully tomorrow will find out. And the writing isn't the best but in this case I'm not hating on it much even thought there are first time authors on whose writing I get angry. But I also didn't really connect to the characters.

Hey guys.. I finally managed to finish it... by speeding the audiobook on 3,5x. I may have missed some things but also I DON'T care.

Somewhere half-way through I just wanted it to be over. It was feeling flat, nothing interesting was happening.. and Fie started annoying me...great.

I still want to give the second book a try, but also if it makes me slumply again like this book did I'm gonna dnf it.

I'm feeling a bit slumpish on top of still adjusting to work and being tired.. and the books I've been reading are definitely not helping 😅

That's why I commented 😂 Don't give up. It was a 🤯 book for me when I finished it because wow

First time I tried reading it I dnf-ed it 😂 The 2nd PoV was confusing and annoying me, however the second time I picked it up, and got over the narration after a few chapters, I loved it.

Okay, I'll move it to the 15th

I can change the dates if you want, but you can also read it mostly whenever.. you start later and will finish it later, no problem if it's in your already planned schedule, and as long as you discuss it. I really like seeing people discuss the books with their buddies.

Chapter 2-4
Having mermaids mixed with African mythology is cool. It's new to so it's interesting, but adding some of the reality - Yemoja has passed to be in the sea because she wants to help the souls of the people that have been stolen from their land.

I'm a bit annoyed with Kola insisting for her to call Yemoja immediately. Like dude, she saved you when she was supposed to take your soul. And she has to call a goddess because you, a human, want that...like let her have a day to think what excuse she's going to present to the goddess.

So... since she's having nightmares and ship is mentioned, also drowning, I think she was a slave too that drowned. Which would make her being a Mami Wata kinda logical. Made to help those whose fate she had experienced.
Oh, okay.. if I had waited literally for the next page I would've seen that 😂

It would be shocking to find out that Kola has been somehow involved with the kidnappings, and that's the only thing that comes to mind to be his secret. Maybe he's forced into it to save his family or something... it's a weak theory, but I don't know what else could he hide.

It's nice that we get to see her memories, to see what happened in her human life.. but I find the memories just jump into the story, and may be to frequent, at least they are too frequent for me.

I wanted to finish it all today, but I'm starting to fall asleep so hopefully I'll finish the last 70 pages tomorrow.

I'm a little sad that by rereading this I'm going to change my thoughts about it.. I was pretty sure I enjoyed it to some extent the first time I read it, but now i'm just a flat line of emotions. I really don't care about anyone and anything. First time I rooted for Fie and Tavin.. now I am not, but also I'm cringing a bit at their romance.

Hey, at least we all survived this meh book. And we'll continue reading it. If I didn't already have the second book close to hand.. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even consider the sequel.

Ohh,.. I didn't know this was a retelling. Now I'm a little interested. I just saw Marissa Meyer and was eh, okay. I've read some books by her and they were enjoyable but I wasn't crazy about them.
