I read Notes from the Underground last year for an intellectual history class and I definitely recommend it.

I would be fine with doing a detour for Omsk and reading horror.

I'd like to do author/setting tasks for some of the other stops, though.

I set out to look for the Bellwether of my flock, which had run away into the forest, or maybe had been stolen, when I passed The Nutcracker and Mouse King in a clearing. They were fighting, and I got out of their way as quickly as I could. I walked a long way until I met The Thief of Always. He hadn't taken my bellwether, so I walked on until I met Hadji Murat, who told me to follow The Sparrow, and I ended up here.

Novelty: Four Stories finished 9/29/2016

Series: Oxford Time Travel #1
First For Kivrin, preparing an on-site study of one of the deadliest eras in humanity's history was as simple as receiving inoculations against the diseases of the fourteenth century and inventing an alibi for a woman traveling alone. For her instructors in the twenty-first century, it meant painstaking calculations and careful monitoring of the rendezvous location where Kivrin would be received.
But a crisis strangely linking past and future strands Kivrin in a bygone age as her fellows try desperately to rescue her. In a time of superstition and fear, Kivrin--barely of age herself--finds she has become an unlikely angel of hope during one of history's darkest hours.
Connie Willis draws upon her understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering, and the indomitable will of the human spirit.

I haven't read all those authors, but I just finished Childhood's End and I was very impressed, it was fascinating. I want to read more of Clarke's work at some point, and also Poul Anderson. I read Starfarers earlier this year and it was pretty good. I'm enjoying listening to Connie Willis's To Say Nothing of the Dog on audio. I didn't realize it was part of a series at first, so I want to read Doomsday Book too. I'm going to start Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson soon.

New buddies - should we make a schedule?"
I requested this buddy read, but since my hold on the ebook came in I've already read a good chunk of it. I still have the book checked out for 13 days, though. I can stick to a schedule for discussion purposes, if anyone else wants to do it that way.
Do you want to pick a day for us and whoever else is joining to discuss part one?
