35559 I like tragedy! At least in fiction. The Pearl is beautiful, but my favorites by Steinbeck are Of Mice and Men and East of Eden. East of Eden was much more dramatic than The Grapes of Wrath, I thought. I think I've read The Red Pony but I can't remember what I thought of it, it was a long time ago.

Cannery Row is one of Steinbeck's lighter books, but I didn't like it. I can't really remember why.

35559 I've just realized that if we move on to Brazil next week, I'll be away from home and (probably) won't have library access the 16th-23rd. So I won't be able to read the book I was planning on, but I might have to take a different letter for that stop. I know I have one for the letter I that I can take on the plane.

NBRC Alphabet 26, Mix & Match (Spell it Out)
35559 13. What is the function of "The Green Morning" as part of the novel?

It’s kind of a Johnny Appleseed story on Mars. However, the story right that comes after it, "The Locusts," is an interesting contrast. This story shows the darker side of the human colonization of Mars — how the settlers aren’t interested in adapting, but want to change Mars to fit what they’re used to. "The rockets came like locusts, swarming and settling in blooms of rosy smoke. And from the rockets ran men with hammers in their hands to beat the world into a shape that was familiar to the eye, to bludgeon away all the strangeness, their mouths fringed with nails so they resembled steel-toothed carnivores, spitting them into their swift hands as they hammered up frame cottages and scuttled over roofs with shingles to blot out the eerie stars, and fit green shades to pull against the night."

14. Is Spender a hero? Why or why not?

I think his goals are heroic, but the way he pursues them is wrong. He can probably be described as a tragic hero in the classic sense. I love the interaction between him and Captain Wilder, it’s one of my favorite parts of the book. There are some great lines here. "Anything that’s strange is no good to the average American. If it doesn’t have Chicago plumbing, it’s nonsense."

These are some of Bradbury’s more ambiguous characters. Even Captain Wilder - the more sensible one usually - loses it and becomes violent in the end, when he catches Sam Parkhill doing target practice in the Martian ruins ("The Captain caught Parkhill and knocked his teeth out," 73-74).

15. Contrast chicken pox and atomic war as types of apocalypse. Note that, in this novel, both are the fault of Earthlings. Does Bradbury have a political message?

The chicken pox is probably a reference to the devastating impact of smallpox in the colonization of North America. It was strictly an accident, while the buildup of weapons that eventually leads to nuclear war is more intentional and calculated, even though what actually sets off the war is an accidental explosion of nuclear weapons in Australia, which destroys the continent ("The Watchers").

16. Was this book what you expected? Would you recommend it to others?

Well, I first read it so long ago that I’m not sure what my expectations were at the time. I’d definitely recommend it overall although I didn’t like all the stories ("The Silent Towns," for example, hasn’t aged well - it’s pretty sexist, I think).

There aren’t any questions about "The Long Years," but I thought this one was interesting because what Hathaway does stands out as one of the more positive examples of technology from the book. It is a little disturbing at first, but is there anything really wrong with it? Hathaway’s robotic family is so human-like that it’s hard to regard them as just machines.

The last story, "The Million-Year Picnic," shows a family that's more willing to genuinely adapt to Mars than most of the previous settlers. That's why the dad burns a map of Earth, to symbolize their need to start over.

5. This book is shelved as short stories on GR but there seems to be an interconnection between chapters. What do you think?

The stories before “And the Moon Be Still As Bright” don’t connect to each other much, but the events of that story are referenced in later ones, so in a way that story is central to the book.

6. After the 4th expedition and planting of trees, the Earth people quickly invaded Mars. Do you think this is a good or bad thing for the Planet Mars?

The first invasions were a tragedy for the Martians, but at this point it’s too late for them. Probably some of the people who came to Mars have better lives than they did before, but unfortunately a lot of what Captain Wilder and Spender were afraid of came true.

7. What do you think actually happened in the chapter 'Night Meeting'. What is your theory?

It seems like a rift in time occurred which allowed Muhe Ca to communicate with Tomas across thousands of years. ("Tonight you could almost touch Time.")

8. Most of the Earth Men want to escape to Mars to get away from Earth. Would you want to move to Mars if you get a chance

I wouldn’t want to go to the Mars depicted in this book. I can understand wanting to leave, but it seem like the people who came to Mars have failed to create something better on Mars than they left behind.

9. What do you think of the Old Martians (blue globes) and do you think they will play any part in this story?

I don’t know, I don’t really remember this part from reading it before.

10. What do you think the author is trying to convey in the story with Mr. Stendahl and his Haunted Mansion?

I think this story is a precursor to Fahrenheit 451, which was published a year later (1951). It shows how people came to Mars looking for a fresh start, but then “good, clean citizens” came along to “make everything safe” and establish a sanitized, conformist civilization.

11. In the chapter 'The Martian', it seemed like the Martian did not have control over his appearance but took the shape of whomsoever the person looking at him is in search for or was missing. But in third expedition the Martians seemed to have full control of the person they were impersonating. What do you think has changed now?

I think maybe the Martian in this story lost control of his abilities for emotional reasons, because of the trauma of being one of the last of his kind.

12. Any predictions on what will happen next?

Nothing to add to what others have said for this question. I remember most of what happens next.
