1) ....Upon gathering all the facts they resolved to save their planet from alien invasion or the diseases earth men brought with them
I like this theory. It seems like the diseases didn't spread right away (going by what's said in the story after this one) - but maybe the Martians could sense disease before it actually broke out, like they can sense thoughts.

Feb 03, 2017 08:23PM

The Martians in this story are definitely more sinister than the ones in "The Earth Men." I guess they just don't like outsiders?
2) What happened to Mrs. Iii?
I agree that she was probably sent to the asylum.
3) What do you think of Bradbury's Mars?
In some ways this setting is closer to the fantasy end of the spectrum than the sf one. The men from Earth don't even need oxygen tanks or suits, for instance.
4) How are you liking the story so far?
This is my 3rd time reading this book, it's one of my favorites of his. There's another story about the Martians in The Stories of Ray Bradbury Volume 2 that wasn't collected here, it's called "Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed."
I'm wondering why the Martians in "The Earth Men" think that the humans are products of other Martians' imaginations, when the Martians in the earlier stories knew they were reading human thoughts.

The Diamond Age: or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer
by Neal Stephenson
The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer is a postcyberpunk novel by Neal Stephenson. It is to some extent a science fiction coming-of-age story, focused on a young girl named Nell, and set in a future world in which nanotechnology affects all aspects of life. The novel deals with themes of education, social class, ethnicity, and the nature of artificial intelligence.

future stops:
for Vladivostok I want to do author/setting too, but spell-it-out is doable. The detour for this one is too hard. For stop #4 or #5 I'd like to do author/setting but I could figure out something for the other options.
Jan 29, 2017 09:27AM

In the meantime I'll log it to the Book Bank."
I haven't read an A book yet. Are we moving on to the detour, then?
