35559 #15: The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith

I enjoyed this one. It was well written, not surprisingly since it's a pseudonym for JK Rowling. The characters were interesting, and I found the plot engaging. I had no idea who had committed the murder until the reveal. I did get some of the many characters confused at times, so all the reveals didn't land as hard as they could have. But it was good enough that I plan to read the next one in the series. I listened to this on audio, and thought the narrator did an excellent job. 3.75 stars.

35559 so can you swap out your books as you read if you end up reading longer ones later?

can you read more than the number of books you say you can?

35559 I intentionally purge my tbr of anything under 3.5. I would definitely have to skip that one!

35559 hi everyone. thinking of joining for the first time but super nervous. I alternate between contemporary fiction, graphic novels, and mm romance. I read a lot, but varied. Like at the moment I am slowly working my way through Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, listening to I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy on audio, and cramming in some mm romance novellas for the trans rights readathon. I probably read at least 100 pages a day, but sometimes take a week to finish because I have several going at once. Would that be helpful for a team or would they hate me?

35559 #14 Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare

Listened on audio and I didn't love the narrator. She did a good job with voices and accents, but not great with inflection. I enjoyed the paranormal and steampunk parts of the story, but feel like I've just outgrown this kind of love triangle. The lack of communication made me crazy and I don't feel like reading two more books for them to finally admit their feelings. I would have loved this when I was younger. I don't plan to read the sequels.

35559 Okay, I edited my post because I was wrong! It was a 25 book detour total. 13 books the wrong way and 12 books to get back. I knew it was 25, just forgot it wasn't 25 each way. Sorry... but honestly, it was still a really long detour. lol

35559 In my first maze I didn't understand the pattern and went left when I should have gone right. Went on a 13 book detour before hitting the dead end. Then had to read all the way back. It was crazy!

A Little Life is about a group of friends.
Cemetery Boys might also work.
The Tea Dragon Society is a young adult graphic novel and definitely fits. So does the Heartstopper: Volume One series.

Pretty sure Remarkably Bright Creatures has a penguin in it, if you're interested.

35559 My kindle says that in Scythe by Neal Schusterman you can find "in the heat of frustrated moments."

And the Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas has it!

35559 Demon Ex Machina (Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom, #5) by Julie Kenner

DNF at 50%. It was boring, and kept going around in circles. I loved this series back in the day, but I think my tastes have just evolved. This also means I got to delete the sequel from my list, so 2 for the price of 1!

So far I have read 5, DNF'd 3, and deleted 5. That puts me at 13 down, 17 to go to reach my goal of 30.

35559 It's by Charlie Cochet and has lion shifters.

35559 I read The Soldati Prince for this prompt last year. It was short and sweet.

35559 An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (The Carls, #1) by Hank Green

Finished this one this morning. It's been on my TBR since 2017. I listened to it on audio and really enjoyed it. It was fast, entertaining, and quite modern as the protagonist lives her life on twitter and other social media. It held up really well. My only complaint is it ends in a cliffhanger, so although I get to cross this off my TBR, I now have to add a new title. sigh...

35559 I recommend Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation for anyone who wants to know what Kindred is about but isn't interested in reading the whole book. Particularly for those that tried and DNF'd it. It's a faster, pared down version but still hits the important points.

35559 Finished #6: As You Wish Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes

This was a great audio book, read by the author and star of the movie Cary Elwes, with loads of cameos by other stars and the director. We've seen the movie a dozen times and showed it to our kids as soon as they were old enough to appreciate it, so this was a fun flashback.

35559 #9 When Everything Changed The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present by Gail Collins

This book was clearly well researched and comprehensive, but would really make a better textbook as it would be supplemented by discussions and other sources. Just listening to it on audio was dull. Every paragraph throws out a new name and event, and it ended up just a jumble in my brain. I wasn't really connecting with the material in the same way I have with other books on the same topic (like The Witches are Coming by Lindy West). I DNF'd it at 30%.
