35559 Hello everyone!

I'm Jackie and I live in North Carolina. I'm retired from a career in Information Technology so I have plenty of time to indulge my reading habit. I read almost anything but favorites are mystery, thrillers, fantasy, and historical fiction.

I've done Wheel before perhaps two or three times, and it's one of my favorite team challenges. Looking forward to reading with all of you!

My shelf is correct.

35559 DQs Day 6
Ch 51 - End

25. Willowdean, oh Willowdean. You are your own worst enemy. First she breaks Mitch's heart because she is finally (somewhat) honest with him, and then she lets her insecurities get in the way of Bo sharing his feelings. Have you ever let your insecurities and other people's opinions stop you from doing something?

I really liked Mitch and honestly would have liked to see Will realize that he was a good friend and given him more of a chance. But we can't necessarily choose who we fall in love with so it's understandable. And yes, I have allowed my insecurities stop me from doing things, especially when I was Will's age.

26. Will sees Ellen crying, but lets the moment pass. Later on the judges ask her about loyalty during her interview and she has some some hard realizations about her friendship with Ellen, and finally gets her moment to apologize. Did you think their make up scene was realistic? Have you ever had a friendship end on bad terms?
Realistic enough. They had so much history between them. All they really needed was to talk and open up to each other.

27. Will digs deep to find her confidence and walks the stage in her swimsuit. That takes courage, regardless of your body shape or size! No way I could do it. And then she goes completely off script for her talent and does her best Jolene (great song, btw). Do you think her mom did the right thing by disqualifying her? If you had been the pagent director, would you have let her compete?
Her mom was right in disqualifying her. No way she should make an exception for her daughter.

28. Will and her mother have a nice moment when Will is helping her get dressed. What do you think about their mother-daughter relationship? Do you think they are finally beginning to understand each other?
I was happy to see this. I do think they were beginning to understand each other and hopefully have a much better relationship in the future.

29. Willowdean leaves the pageant after Millie is named second-runner up. It makes me a little crazy that they leave it unknown. Who do you think is crowned the winner? Did you like the ending?
I think the ending was appropriate. Will accomplished what she set out to do. I loved the fact that Millie placed so high since it meant so much to her.
35559 DQs Day 5: Chapters 44 - 51

20. Willowdean and her mum seem to briefly reach an understanding over the dress fitting but after the alterations are made they come to blows. It’s the first time that her mum tells her she expected her to lose weight and she fights back. Why do you think this is?

I think Will's mom expects that Will would choose to lose the excess weight like she did when she was a teenager. I can understand her wanting Will to be slimmer for health reasons but not to win a beauty pageant. Also, she has to know that Will has tried unsuccessfully to lose weight in the past.

21. After the talent show Willowdean seeks help from the entertainers at The Hideaway, where they were shown how to walk in heels by pretending to walk the sobriety line. Why did she go to them and have you ever tried to walk the sobriety line, drunk or sober?
It seems that these entertainers were the only ones that would be willing to really help the girls. Goodhearted people.

22. Willowdean is invited to Bo’s to study where she meets his stepmum properly and they discuss astrology. Is what she is told accurate from what we know of her? Does your star sign reflect you?
Well, if Leo's are opinionated and stubborn, she fits.

23. Bo lays his cards on the line with Willowdean and says he doesn’t want their relationship to be a secret, he wants to do it right. She is reluctant to give him an answer but accepts Mitch’s offer to be her escort to the pageant. Is this right? What do you think is going to happen? What would you do?
Will needs to be honest with Mitch first of all and quit stringing him along. And I get so frustrated with Will. Sometimes she acts like she doesn't care what anyone else thinks about her and then she rejects Bo because she's afraid of what people will say about them being together. Make up your mind!!

24. The slumber party brings out a few secrets. Will this change how Willowdean perceives herself and the other girls? Knowing Hannah’s reasons for entering do you think she will go through with trying to ruin it?
I can understand why Hannah is bitter but I don't think she will do anything to ruin the pageant now. I do think that Will is really becoming close to these girls which is good because she needs their friendship.
35559 DQ Day 4
Chapters 33 to 43

16. Dolly Parton night was a surprising treat for the girls! Definitely a different experience. It felt to me like it could have been a healing point or turning point for Will in more ways than one. What do you think about the scene, did it add anything special to the book, and do you think it will hold significance in some way later in the story?

This was one of my favorite parts of the book so far. It was good for Will to see Lucy in a different light and to realize how much she meant to other people.

17. I’m almost over Callie and Ellen myself at this point. Friends fight, but this has really blown up. When Callie approaches Will in the bathroom with her mini speech and says that she knows Ellen has always “been good to Will”, what do you think her point was with the speech? Was she truly angry on her friend’s behalf when she went into her admonishment on how wrong it was for Will to be upset that Ellen was entering the pageant? Do you think she’s trying to help Will in a twisted way with her rude advice, or do you think she’s just trying to rub salt in wounds? Would you keep trying to speak to Ellen and make up after the rebuff she issued at Harpy’s after two months when Will tried again to make up?
Callie is just a troublemaker. I don't think she's trying to help either Ellen or Will. At this point, I would be done with trying to repair the friendship if I was Will.

18. Mitch and Bo affect Will in different ways, but it’s pretty clear Will is using Mitch in more ways than one. She has him to hang out with on weekends when Ellen is gone, and she went from having a dance partner where she rested her head on his chest throughout several dances before pulling away from him immediately when they get outside so he doesn’t “get the wrong idea”. Mixed signals overdose! Do you think she doesn’t realize what she is doing, that she is subconsciously using him, or do you think she isn’t considering his feelings enough? What do you think is going to happen between them?
Mitch is a good guy, much better than Will deserves, I think. I hate that she's using him the way she is.

19. The Sadie Hawkins dance seems important in Clover City. I had heard of a song about it, but had no idea it was an actual dance at a school. What do you think about the traditions of finding inventive ways to ask people to the dance? Were you surprised that Bo was finally grabbed up for a date? What did you think of Will’s attempt to ask Mitch immediately afterward, and her creativity in doing so?
I wasn't surprised that Bo was asked. And it's pretty typical of Will to ask Mitch just afterward. Again, she is being very unfair to Mitch.
35559 DQ Day 3
Chapters 21 to 33

11. For someone claiming and trying to be body positive about herself, Willowdean sure isn't giving anyone else any slack. Her description of Hannah, like with others, was just mean. Do you think the author is projecting Willowdean's insecurities on how she sees herself onto others?

I agree that Will is probably projecting her insecurities through her descriptions of the other girls.

12. What did you think about the incident Patrick kneed in the balls incident? He didn't seem like Mitch's best friend saying that (honestly, maybe Patrick and Willowdean should date). What did you think about her mom's reaction and the resulting blow up between mom & daughter?
Side note: to anyone with teenagers, we are here for you.

Patrick is a jerk and I think Will's reaction was due to years of listening to his abuse of herself and others. It was an extreme reaction but one that he had coming. I can understand her mother's reaction and her grounding Will.

13. Did anyone else want to high five Ellen for calling out Willowdean on her crap? What did you think of their argument? Do you think the rift will be repaired? If so, do you think a Dolly Parton sing-along (thanks Cat) will be part of their healing process?
Definitely Ellen should have called Will out. Ellen has as much right as anyone else to enter the pageant, and Will is being a jerk. It's getting hard to sympathize with Will as she behaves so badly to everyone. I don't know if the friendship will survive. For that to happen, Will really needs to get over herself and start acting like a friend.

14. Based on the blurb, Millie's attitude and pep talk while at the restaurant is what I would of expected from Williowdean. What do you think of these girls deciding to enter the pageant? What did you think of Millie's pep talk?
Will's entering the pageant was good motivation for these other girls but she is too wrapped up in herself. I guess that's pretty typical teenage behavior however, and I think Will is a good person at heart. Maybe Millie's pep talk will make Will see how she can take this pageant and show that she and the other girls are worthy contestants. You shouldn't have to be slim and pretty to be worthy.

15. Thoughts on Mitch? Where do you think his and Willowdean's relationship will go? Do you think she'll crush his poor soft heart?
I really like Mitch but I think Will is still hung up on Bo. I wish she could see Mitch for the good guy/boyfriend that he can be.
35559 DQ for Day 2
Chapters 11-20

6. Picking up on the previous grief question to turn it around towards Willowdean and her mother. Will seems to think (I'm paraphrasing here) that her mother is a heartless cow and wants to use Lucy's room all to herself without any consideration whatsoever for anyone else. I can't help but wonder though if the mother isn't somehow trying to be close to Lucy - her own sister - by setting up a craft room in Lucy's space. Everyone deals with grief in their own way, and while yes, I agree with her (unlike Will) that the dusty old things will eventually need to go, I feel like she's trying to find a way to cope at the same time.

I agree that people deal with grief in different ways. Using Lucy's room for something that she enjoys doing may be Will's mom's way of dealing with her grief.

7. Will and Bo. Thoughts? More particularly, Will's reaction to finding out that Bo will start going to the same school?
I can see why Will was upset that Bo hadn't told her that he was changing schools. If he didn't want to keep their relationship a secret, he would have told her.

8. The more I read, the more I wonder how Ellen and Will are (still) friends with the way they talk to each other. According to Will, they are drifting apart because Ellen is having sex and because of Callie (she doesn't quite say it but it is definitely there). Their interactions however do make me wonder, a lot. I feel like they're friends more because it's a habit than anything else. They're both dependent on each other - Will because she doesn't seem to have other friends and can't stay in the pool alone? Ellen because she needs a back-up when she goes to pick up her pay check?) What do you make of their friendship now that we know more. Irreparable rift? Habit? Undying friendship?
Their friendship does seem to be unhealthy for both of them, sort of a co-dependency. And why in the world can't Ellen pick up her paycheck without backup? It's hard to see this friendship lasting but I don't know. Their shared history may be enough to see them through this patch.

9. And this inevitably brings me to Will's interactions with Callie. It seems like Callie is at least trying, even though there is the fat-girl-issue, but she isn't completely ignoring Will, unlike Will herself, who barely manages to be civil to the girl. Sure, I completely understand the jealousy of thinking that someone is stealing your (best) friend from you, but it isn't helping Will's case that she is basically being a douche to the girl.
Callie is the type to be nice to your face and then talk about you behind your back like she did in the store. I don't blame Will for treating Callie the way she does.

10. Did anyone else have that moment of "oh shit, something really terrible is going to happen on the date" when Ellen and Tim tell Will that Patrick Thomas is Mitch's best friend. Or is it just me who thinks that there is a very obvious lack of mobbing and finger-pointing? Not that this is a bad thing, on the contrary! Though I do find it odd since Will has A LOT of issues and basically hates people who are not Ellen (and Bo).
Mitch seemed a pretty good guy and I was hoping that he and Will would hit it off. Interesting that Will didn't feel out of place going out with Mitch when she thought that she and Bo would make people talk about how unlikely a pair they made. I guess because Mitch was a big guy, it wouldn't surprise anyone. Still seems like an odd way of thinking.
35559 DQs Day 1 - Chaps 1 - 10

1. What do you think of Willowdean? Does she feel like a sufficiently real person?

She feels like a real person to me. She seems mature in some ways and not so much in others. Typical teenager in that respect, a mixture of conflicting emotions and behaviors.

2. What you you think about her relationship with Ellen? They are starting to keep secrets from each other now - do you think that this is the start of a drifting apart or will they stay close?
It could be a trend but I think maybe this is a temporary thing. They have been friends for so long, maybe their close friendship will survive.

3. Bo is interesting - the opposite of Will in terms of being reserved in comparison to her chattiness, but with something lurking in his backstory. Do you want to have a guess at what's up with him? Would anyone NOT have done the same as Will and followed him to the abandoned school in the hopes of more making out?!
Bo is a mystery at this point and I'm not sure if he is going to be a positive or negative force in Will's life. At her age, I probably would have been too chicken to go with him. I think Will is hungry for attention and proof that Bo finds her attractive.

4. Will claims ownership of "fat" when she introduces herself to Bo. How successful do you think she is in her aim to stop it from being an insult?
I think this is a defense mechanism that Will uses. It's like if she insults herself, others won't

5. Lucy has clearly been a big influence in both Will and Ellen's lives, and yet they haven't been talking about her at all since her death. Do you think this is a normal reaction to a sudden death? Would you be like Will's mother, and get rid of everything, or keep it?
Lucy's death was probably the first experience with death that Will and Ellen have had and they're not really sure how to process it. It appears that they are just now starting to talk about it with each other and hopefully that is a good step in their grieving process. It's been six months so it makes sense that Will's mom would want to remove most of Lucy's possessions. Hopefully, she would keep some things to remember her by however.
