DQ Day 5: Chapters 19-end20. Charlotte has a very bad reaction to being returned. Do you think this is normal? Why do you think she reacted so extremely?
I think Charlotte truly loves Bess and wants to be with her. Going back to Alexandra must be like going back to prison.
21. Do you agree with Alexandra's decision to not pay Ned? Do you think she was right in doing this?
He certainly doesn't deserve to be paid. And Alexandra certainly doesn't have any compunction to be generous.
22. Alexandra seems to be very affected by the events that have happened. She seems less afraid, although maybe more reactive. She also manages to go outside for a short time. Do you think it will last? Will she improve? Why?
This just does not ring true. Hard to believe she could do such a turnaround.
23. The two women come up with an interesting arrangement for Charlotte and came to understand each other better in the end. Do you think that this could have happened if Bess hadn't lied?
No way.
24. The ending had lots of happy events. Did you like it? Do you think it was realistic?
I'm glad it ended the way it did but it really was very unrealistic. Mainly I'm glad it ended. I did not care for either woman.

DQ Day 4 - Chapters 14-1815. Knowing how Alexandra's parents died and seeing her state of mind after being surprised by Dr. Mead, Eliza, and Charlotte in masks, has your perception of Alexandra changed in any way?
No, I believe she is mentally ill and can't help her paranoia/fears.
16. What do you think of Bess running away with Charlotte? Looking at her reasons do you think she is being selfish or doing what is best for Charlotte?
I believe she thinks she's doing the best for Charlotte but she hasn't really thought it through. She's fooling herself into thinking that she can take care of Charlotte.
17. What do you think of Lyle and his willingness to help Bess escape with her daughter? Do you think he will remain in Bess's life?
I believe that Lyle cares for Bess and that he will remain in her life. Bess seems to care for him too so hopefully they will be together in the future.
18. Was anyone surprised by Ned's theft of Eliza's money or subsequent betrayal of Bess? What kind of deal do you think he made for himself in exchange for information about Bess?
I wasn't surprised by Ned's theft, despicable as it was. He has evidently gotten himself in an extremely difficult position and doesn't care who he hurts.
19. Charlotte certainly went through a lot in a short time during this section. How well do you think she handled the reality of being on the run with Bess? What do you think her reaction will be to being returned to Alexandra?
I feel sorry for Charlotte. I think she handled being on the run as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Going back to Alexandra is going to be difficult too.

DQ Day 3: Ch. 11-1311. Do you think the author has been able to give Bess and Alexandra individual voices? Do you like books with multiple points of view?
I normally like books with multiple points of view and I think this one has been done well.
12. What do you think ‘Eliza’ and Agnes were talking about in the kitchen? Do you think either Agnes or Maria know that Charlotte came from the Foundling home?
Probably they were talking about Alexandra's fears and her behavior toward Charlotte. Unless Agnes and Maria were with her when she got Charlotte, I doubt that they know that she came from the Foundling home.
13. I think that Alexandra will get much worse re her fears of the outside after the mask prank. Do you think her thoughts about ‘Eliza’ will suffer because of it?
I wonder if Alexandra might actually get better after talking about what happened to her parents. That may be expecting too much. It appears that she directing her animosity toward Dr. Mead so maybe Eliza will be spared.
14. Do you believe that Dr Mead was telling the truth about not knowing about what happened to Alexandra’s parents? Why has he lied about who ‘Eliza’ is?
I'm really not sure about Dr. Mead. It's quite possible that Daniel never told him about Alexandra's parents, but this whole thing with bringing Eliza into the house is a mystery. He seems to care somewhat for Alexandra so maybe he thinks Eliza would help both with Charlotte and Alexandra.

DQ Day 2: Ch. 6-106. Were you surprised to find out Daniel had a wife? I personally was super surprised as I originally believed him when he said he was single. What do you think of the way Daniel died?
Not really. There wasn't really a relationship between Daniel and Bess except in Bess' mind. It sounds like Daniel died of an aneurysm.
7. How do you think Alexandra Callard knew about Bess and her daughter?
Probably from that friend of Daniel's that told Bess he was dead.
8. What do you think of the way Alexandra and Charlotte live? Do you think Alexandra keeps Charlotte home to stop her from being recognized or because she is truly scared of the real world?
I think Alexandra is seriously mentally ill, suffering from paranoia. I think she is petrified of everything.
9. "Eliza" has been fired on her first day. What do you think of Alexandra's reasoning for firing her? Do you think part of Alexandra knows that she is Charlotte's real mom?
Again, I think Alexandra is mentally ill and fears Eliza's influence on Charlotte. Plus she is jealous of the fondness she sees between the two after just one day.
10. Do you think Bess will find a way to still see her daughter? How?
I think she will especially since she has now met her. She will find a way.

DQ Day 1 - Chapters 1-51. How are you liking the writing style ? Are you enjoying the story so far?
I like the writing style and am enjoying the story.
2. After reading that opening scene, what do you think of the practice of the Hospital taking babies based on a lottery (the coloured balls in the bag) ?
It seems probably the fairest way to do it. There were so many babies and a limited number of spots.
3. At some point Bess says that "knowing she [Clara] could be anywhere instead of nowhere at all was torture even more exquisite." Implying that not knowing where her child is is worse than knowing she's dead. What's your opinion ? Or would you rather not know ?
I can understand that. I think the uncertainty is worse than losing her to death. The not knowing and wondering what happened to her, whether if she is alive, what kind of circumstances she's in - all this would be torture to a mother.
4. What do you make of the child's father, Daniel Callard ? Everyone keeps asking Bess if he's really dead. Do you suspect there's more to Daniel than we've been told so far ?
I think there might be some mystery there that will come to play later in the book.
5. Time for your theories ! Who do you think claimed Clara on the 28th of November 1747, the day after Bess gave up her baby ?
I have no idea. I don't believe it could be any character that has been introduced so far. Whoever it is, of course, knew of Clara's birth and knew of Bess' plans to leave her at the hospital.
I'm planning to start The Foundling this week also.
I'm not sure what I'll read first for TT. I have several to finish for other challenges that end this week so haven't really planned beyond that. :)

Maritza, I'm currently reading the first in the Rock Chick series and enjoying it. A friend loved the series and highly recommended it.

Hello team! I'm Jackie and live in North Carolina. I'm retired and enjoy reading challenges probably more than I should. :)
I've done TT a couple times before. I'll read almost anything and have also read some books that I wouldn't have read otherwise except for a challenge. Part of the fun for me is searching for books that fit.
My favorite genres are mystery, thriller, fantasy (epic, urban, and middle grade, I like them all), and historical fiction. In the past year, I've also started to read a lot of science fiction. I also have really gotten into audiobooks over the last couple of years so that is my chosen medium if I can get it.
Looking forward to TT and getting to know you all!
