118012 I agree with Emad on those books. And the Hitchhikers series is truly hilarious!

118012 Marie, they are rather simple books, although the mythology is rather interesting. If you're looking for something light to read, I'd recommend them. I remember giving up half way through the series, but they're reasonable enough to read.

118012 Bouchra, my first experience with Russian Lit was Crime and Punishment and it was a really amazing start. If you want something shorter, I'm planning on reading Dosotevsky's Notes from Underground in 2014.

I've also read Tolstoy's short story The Death of Ivan Ilych, which would be a great short book to get you used to the names and the style of writing!

118012 Although it's more general, Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything is a great all round history of science book. He writes in a very readable way!

Narin, seriously, it seems like yesterday I was 15, and it's already been 2 years! It will fly by!

118012 Rob, they are two great goals! It will be interesting to see what you end up reading from your list. 92 books this year is very good though!

118012 Bouchra, that's an amazing goal! I'd love to aim as high as 150 books, but at 100, I'm pushing it!

Good luck to you!

118012 There is already a thread about our planned January Reading. You can find it here.

I've also made a general 'long list' thread of books people plan to read in the whole of 2014.

118012 You've got some amazing selections in that first challenge!

Alias Grace, The Book Thief, Rebecca and Middlemarch are all up there in my favourite novels collection!

118012 Natalie, Casey, Jade and Rachael, welcome to the group! I hope you enjoy yourself here, and good luck with your 2014 reading!

We currently have a number of Group Read Nomination threads running for January. Feel free to get involved if you wish!

118012 Poe is definitely on my to-read list for 2014!
Dec 18, 2013 10:56AM

118012 There is Personal Challenges that people can set up, but I'll definitely make that thread!
Dec 18, 2013 10:54AM

118012 Fahrenheit 451 is weird, but an amazing book! The Lord of the Rings are phenomenal as well!

I'd definitely be interested in doing a group read of Anna Karenina, or Les Mis! I'm also planning on reading The Canterbury Tales and Wuthering Heights too this year!
Dec 18, 2013 10:29AM

118012 It was interesting. And it ended very differently to how I imagined it would!
Dec 18, 2013 10:28AM

118012 Sarah, I must admit I'm prone to planning ahead too! I have a list of books in my mind that I really want to read in 2014! I can't wait to find out which ones you've picked!

Everyone's goals look amazing, and it's going to be so exciting working through them all!
Dec 17, 2013 09:25AM

118012 Casey, I internet-high-five you. I don't know how you've gotten so far. I think I just need to break through the middle bit of A Clash of Kings to get back into them again.
Dec 17, 2013 04:00AM

118012 As far as I know, it will, Ola. Then the 2013 one will be crossed off.
Dec 16, 2013 08:08AM

118012 Glady, I have the exact same problem. I'll binge-read for 3 weeks then completely stop. I won't be able to do that when I start my English Lit degree!

I hope you enjoy the group!
Dec 16, 2013 08:07AM

118012 Now all I want to read is Russian Literature! I started The Death of Ivan Ilych last night, and it's weird trying to get back into the ideas of Russian Lit.

Both of you have read some really big novels! I'm utterly jealous!

118012 Someone recommended doing a list of 'suggested' reads for each month, ones that are widely well known, or 'typical' for that genre. Feel free to post to add ideas. I will delete your post after I've added it, just to make it nice and tidy, but please give suggestions for what books you think are 'key' ones for each genre!

118012 Debi, I think we all have that feeling! My personal challenge this year is to read all the classics gathering dust on my shelves...

75 is the same goal I'm going for, although I'm tempted to push it to 100...
