118012 I absolutely love both of your blogs, Michael. I feel a bit stalkerish when I always comment on them!

118012 I think you can get far more out of a book by seeing other people's reactions and views. We're doing Wuthering Heights in another group, and I never knew so many people hated it!

118012 After finishing A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens has definitely become less daunting! I found it a really interesting story, and while it was long (and slightly rambling), it still was a really lovely novel.

I'm planning on reading A Christmas Carol next month. If anyone wants to read it with me, I've made a post about it in the buddy-reads thread

118012 Book blogging has recently become a (small) obsession for me. I find it rather liberating writing about everything I read!

Does anyone else own a blog? Book-based or otherwise!

118012 2013/14 Classic Bookshelf Challenge

I've notorious for buying books, putting them on my bookshelf, then reading something else. It's lead me having a classics bookshelf full of books I haven't read, and it's starting to bug me. Hence, this challenge. Below in the list is the titles I most want to read of books I already own, and I'm hoping to get them read before 31st December 2014. There are some mammoth ones, but we'll get there eventually. Hopefully. I'll also probably update this list after Christmas, where I'm bound to get some more classics!

My list:
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
Emma by Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Persuasion by Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Other Poems by Samuel T. Coleridge
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Middlemarch by George Eliot
Selected Poems by T.S. Eliot
Grimms Fairy Tales by Brothers Grimm
Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
The Odyssey by Homer
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (I've failed once before)
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Paradise Lost by John Milton
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
Le Morte D'Arthur by Thomas Malory
Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian
Dracula by Bram Stoker
The Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson
Gullivers Travels by Jonathon Swift
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

118012 If you are thinking of reading a book and want to read it with other people, feel free to post in this thread to see if anyone else wants to read it with you! If a person, or people seem interested, you can make a thread in this folder to discuss the book.

Posting in this thread:
- Please request a buddy read for a specific book, rather than just posting a link to your whole TBR shelf.
- If possible, put when you're roughly thinking of starting it.

118012 I'd glad! It just seemed such a lovely way to get everyone out of their comfort zone, if they wish to participate of course!

I know personally that I stick way too much in my comfort zone (either classics or dystopias) and I know I need to start experiencing some books I wouldn't normally read!

118012 I'm aware of this, Michael, believe me I did not mean to 'steal' anything. I just thought it was such a lovely idea, and would be well suited to a group of this sort.

If you have any problems with it, feel free to message me about it. I'll be happy to remove the thread if you are in any way offended or concerned.

118012 I wish I could study those books. I'm stuck with Brideshead Revisited. I had Gatsby last year which I absolutely hated.

118012 I haven't it a clue where to start with him. Might see what they have in the library...
Nov 11, 2013 11:44AM

118012 I'm completely the same, Kirk! Although a long book does intimidate me a bit. It's why I put Middlemarch off for so long!
Nov 11, 2013 11:32AM

118012 That is true. I've been reading plays/short stories over the last few days, and it's felt really refreshing not having like 600 pages to go like I had with Middlemarch!

118012 I really need to start reading short story collections... I read The Yellow Wallpaper, which was really interesting.

I know The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has been nominated in another group, so that will be another short story I will have read. I might try some Poe if I can get it out my school library...

118012 It's interesting how people are different! Like, Michael, you say you don't have the attention span to read one book. I don't have the attention span to read more than one book. I know that if I start another one, I'll never finish the original one, and then I'll be left with a pile of unfinished books
Nov 11, 2013 11:15AM

118012 I must admit, it does depend what you're reading, and how much time you have. You could edit it a bit to do 4 books a month, Kirk.
Nov 11, 2013 10:34AM

118012 That sounds like a wonderful idea, Faye!

118012 I've seen this in another group and it looks like a really nice idea!

Each month has a set genre/theme (e.g. Romance, Science Fiction) and participants aim to read one or more books from that genre during the month. You can if you wish, post the books you're aiming to read for the whole year in regards to the genres at the start of the year, to get books that you've wanted to read for ages read.

For example, say February might by Dystopian/Utopian month and so I aim read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. If I wanted to, I could read another one in that genre (e.g. The Maze Runner).

If people are interested in this, we can use this thread to discuss what genres everyone wants!

THE GENRE LIST
January - Historical
February - Romance/Chick-Lit
March - Young Adult
April - Humour
May - Fantasy/Science-Fiction
June - Contemporary
July - Utopian/Dystopian
August - Crime/Mystery
September - Classic/Literary
October - Horror
November - Non-Fiction
December - Adventure

118012 Watching TV shows has been the biggest downfall of my reading this year! I'm now basically abstaining myself from watching anything. It's amazing how much my reading has gone up since I've stopped watching TV...

Now, I don't even consider watching TV any more. It's always 'I've got to read the next chapter in my book' rather than 'I've got to watch the latest episode of Show X'.

118012 That's a lovely idea, Vicky! I've been aiming to do that this year, but things have been going a lot faster than that, and months are far more busier than others for me.

It's a lovely goal, and I'd love to see how it works out!

118012 I really need to catch up on Dickens...
