Only as part of them, not as a genre itself. We are one short of 12 though.

Faye, that's a very good idea. I think if we don't have YA, many people would feel left out as it is a large part of Goodreads.

That would work.
How would you define Contemporary then?

Literary could be paired with Classic, that would work. We can move Dystopian/Utopian to Science Fiction.
There seems to be two definitions of 'contemporary' literature: being set in the timeframe it was written in, and dealing with modern issues.

Taking into mind, Contemporary, Classic and YA books can be of any genre, it's just the age range/time they were written. For example, you could have a dystopian YA book, a mystery Contemporary and a romantic Classic.
Or we could have Classic, Young Adult, General?

There's too many to pick from! Literary always confused me, I must admit! Adventure could come under Fantasy and Science Fiction. Unless we combine Fantasy and Science-Fiction, and have Adventure as a separate genre.
So, it would look like this:
Fantasy/Science-Fiction
Adventure
Horror
Crime/Mystery
Historical
Chick-lit
Non-Fiction
Contemporary
Classic
Young Adult
Utopian/Dystopian
Humour

So you don't think separate them? I just think otherwise it will be very hard to get people to join in as there is no set genre for the group. That's why I was thinking more than one, so we can get a bit of variety, just like the group will have a lot of people with a large amount of variety...

Contemporary and Chick-Lit sounds great!
We could merge Crime/Mystery, to make things less confusing.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a fantastic novel. Definitely one of my highlights too this year!

Hi everyone,
A key part of any group I think is it's group reads. It brings people together, and can definitely help people keep going when they hit a bad patch of reading.
Due to the wide variety of the group and it's members, I was considering doing three group reads each month, to cover the main sections of reading. Of course, you don't have to take part, it would just be a nice way of making people band together!
I was thinking these three group reads:
- Contemporary (perhaps books since 2000)
- Classics
- Young Adult
What do people think? Would you consider joining in and voting? Or is three too much?

I really need to get back to my blogging... Haven't done it in a while!

Welcome everyone!
I hope you all enjoy it here. 2014 is coming up worryingly fast!

Looks like a tough challenge! It will be interesting to see what books you pick!

Thinking off the top of my head, these are ones I can think of that are
big genres:
Fantasy
Science-Fiction
Horror
Crime
Historical
Romance
Non-Fiction
Mystery
Classic
Young Adult
Utopian/Dystopian
and I can't think of one more...
What does everyone think?

These all sound like wonderful goals! It's good that people are pushing themselves, and I can't wait to get started with 2014!

That's excellent! We should try formulate a genre list.

Oh dear god highlighting hurts. I could never do that. I've only done it once in a textbook because I needed to get the information down to the key points, and there was so much of it...
I've started doing underlinings and quick notes in the margins, in pencil of course. Paradise Lost is being good practice, as I'm generally writing really simply what is happening, and if there is anything that stands out, or references I don't understand. Perhaps I'll get better at it, I don't know!

The idea of people calling December/January summed always confuses me.
Hopefully I can get everything else that I have planned finished by then!

I really hope I don't start talking in blank verse... That would sound monumentally weird... I am enjoying it so far though, and am trying to get a book a day read.

Geoff, Catch-22 is one I'm definitely interested in, I just don't know if I'm going to have time during all my other group reads. I found it really hard to get into, so I put it down a few days ago, but reading with someone else would definitely be a push I might need...
