Chris Hicks I'm concerning myself less with a number this year (I set it at an optimistic 20), and more on focusing on new reads. I want to try out different authors, different works I haven't yet read from authors I already love, and tackling some classics I have been meaning to get to.

message 52: by Amy (new)

Amy Brown I want to read at least 250 books this year. I think that I can do it.

message 53: by Tammy (new)

Tammy My goal is the same as last year; 38 since I did not reach it. I read a very wide variety and lots of lengthy and slow books so i hope to meet my goal! It has been my goal since the first time I participated in the challenge!

message 54: by Suvi (last edited Jan 01, 2015 07:35AM) (new)

Suvi I'm also setting my goal lower, but only because I know I'm going to be busy this year, so I'm making sure I will complete the challenge (not completing it is out of the question ;D). Reading 80 books in 2015 is definitely more realistic than the 120 books of 2014.

I agree with others that the purple logo is beautiful! Really fresh.

Happy 2015 everyone! :)

message 55: by Antonio (new)

Antonio I'll repeat the same challenge for last year (15 books), because, this time I want to focus in books ONLY. Also, I don't want to let the most of them until the deadline is near as f..k XD

This time I want to know which my limits are :P

message 56: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I love reading before I go to sleep, in my free time, and if I am taking a bath. I honestly did not read a lot of books last year, so my goal will be low. I like the idea of not rushing to read 50 books in a year, to read a couple of books with a lot of pages. Since I did not read a lot last year, my goal is to read at least 20 books. If I read more than 20, that's great, but I am going to stick with 20 books for a goal this year.

message 57: by Diana (new)

Diana Bustamante My goal is to read 75 books. I track from mid-June to mid-June when I began logging what I'd read when I retired the first time. I give myself permission not to finish anything that doesn't grab me regardless of others' reviews.

message 58: by Shrouk (new)

Shrouk 2014 was first year for me here , and I completed my first challenge ,I could not believe that I did ....
2015 Challenge that I read 35 book help me to grow and know myself better and meet new friends and travel to new countries :) , How want come with me ?? :D

message 59: by Marilee (new)

Marilee I set my challenge at 45 in '14 and surpassed that, so I'm upping the ante to 55 for '15. I respond positively to the motivation of a challenge, which prompts me to stop wasting time on the computer and read books instead.

About a quarter of the books I "read" are recorded, which I listen to when in the car, walking, flying… I can't sit down in a chair to listen or I fall asleep, which doesn't happen with the written word, though I'll admit a slow moving book read at night is a great antidote for occasional insomnia.

I'd like to read more non-fiction this year in the form of memoirs, biographies, travel adventure as well as social histories.

message 60: by Renate (new)

Renate Wow 4 challenges already completed.... Do these people not really understand how the challenge works or do they want to mess with the statistics for fun? I ask the same with regard to those people who challenge themselves to read 500 books and end up reading 3 or 4 books. Are they sincere when they start their challenge or are they just here to mess up the statistics for those of us who are serious with it?

message 61: by Andrzej (new)

Andrzej Well, I barely made my target for 2014 and the 2015 is going to be a real rollercoaster for me - but I aim for 60 again :)

message 62: by Yan (new)

Yan I exceeded my reading target in 2014 and read 28 books ( rather than 20 books as planned). I really enjoyed the experience and would like to take up the challenge again this year.

I set my target as 25 books and hopefully I am able to finish one book per two weeks. Instead of reading for the sake of reaching target, I would also like to put in some deep thoughts while reading. I plan to write a book journal for this year whenever possible. I had listed several books in my want to read list, and hopefully I can exceed my expectation again.

2015 - is going to be another great year for reading! I hope I can also improve my writing and other career goals, too. :-)

message 63: by Krystal (last edited Jan 01, 2015 08:59AM) (new)

Krystal I think I'll stick to 25. I'm not even sure where to start this year. I put my books in to categories like HF, Drama, bio's. Then I separated my HF's by country. I'm going to start with the books on my own shelf, then bookclub. Then I can start on my shelfs on goodreads. It took me 4 months to read one book that was 500 pages. But then I read The Kings Curse by Philppa Gregory and I had it for 1 week. So it's funny.

message 64: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Souvanna I read all the time, that is not the problem. My problem is that I always read the same type of books. This year my goal is 24 books.... 12 books that have to do with my career (I'm a teacher) and 12 books that are considered classics.

message 65: by Cathleen (new)

Cathleen I achieved my challenge for 2014 which was at times difficult to do. I am happy I succeeded but this year my goal will be a fewer number of books this way I can enjoy the read more then feeling pressured to achieve a goal.

message 66: by Traci (new)

Traci I met my 2014 goal of 30 books a few weeks before the end of the year, so I think that is an achievable number for me again this year. I considered upping it by five books for 2015, but have decided to tackle some of the big books I've been avoiding -- The Lord of the Rings is on the top of that list. Ken Follet's "Winter of the World" and "Edge of Eternity" are waiting for some attention and I also have had a copy of The Mists of Avalon for over 20 years that I really should get to one of these days...

message 67: by Mikayla (last edited Jan 01, 2015 09:06AM) (new)

Mikayla My challenge is set at 25 books for now. Though, I know I will surpass this challenge, I can easily increase the number as I read throughout the year, to keep myself challenged.

I also aim to read more adult books, weather it be fiction, non-fiction or even historical fiction such as The Book Thief. I've only read five adult novels and all of t hem have been very good, so look forward to see if any other authors can bring anything as good as those five.

Graphic novels are also on my to read list, as I've read none up to now. Though I don't think genre or being age appropriate really counts with this, as I just want to see if I like any of the things graphic novels have to offer.

message 68: by Negar (new)

Negar I have an MA entrance exam this year, and I have to be reading a lot, but I can't put time for novels. I'll join you in 2016 though.

You can update your challenge throughout the year if needed. I did it after setting the bar to high for myself (at 50 books), though after reading the lower amount of books I changed the number of my challenge to keep me focused on reading.

message 70: by Mike (new)

Mike I enjoy the GoodReads goal but have always wished 'Words Read' was tracked as a stat too. For 2014, I read 16% more books but 28% more pages by increasing my goal by 5 books from 2013. I don't know how different Words per Page would impact the stats but think it would be a helpful metric for a reading goal since that is the base unit of a book. I know this info isn't made available for a book but would think with ebooks so prevalent these days that it could be something made available. I will increase my Book goal for 2015 but will always give really close attention to Pages Read as a true measuring stick.

message 71: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Belk In 2015 I plan to read more novels than in 2014. I want to read books by authors I haven't read before. Also, more historical fiction, trilogies (which I love) and more Southern authors. I challenge myself to 50 books.

message 72: by Brandon (new)

Brandon James I've been thinking along the same lines as a few of you - quality vs. quantity. Or rather, fewer books with more meat rather than many smaller books. I've had some larger books on my reading list for the last coupe of years that I've yet to tackle (Lonesome Dove, Brothers Karamazov) that I hope to read this year.

I also use Goodreads to keep track of the graphic novels I read and I wish they could be included in some other category as I feel, for me personally, they clog up my reading challenge. I know I could do that myself but.. I also like to have a nice and complete yearly reading list.

message 73: by Gabby (new)

Gabby This is my first real reading challenge! Considering I have a ton of exams in the first half of this year I'm not sure how much casual reading I'll be able to do before July.

Hopefully I'll have considerably more free time later this year, but for now I'll go with a modest goal of 40 books but I'll definitely aim higher. Ultimately though, as some of you have said, the quality of the books I read will be more important than the quantity. :)

message 74: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Hamel Looking to get back on track with reading this year. Since I work full-time, have aging parents and in-laws, and am a church musician, I am setting my goal at 36: 24 fiction and 12 non-fiction.

message 75: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn I would like to read at least 52 books ... one per week ... this year. However, to be realistic and account for the fact that I read books of different lengths and some that are more serious and thoughtful, while others are just short and/or for fun, I will set a goal of 40 books. This goal will also allow for fallow periods when I just don't have time to read books, although I am still keeping up with news articles and magazine articles on the Internet.

message 76: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Now that I'm done with uni, I'm ready to get back into reading. My goal for this year is 50, with a sub-goal of cleaning out the books I own but haven't gotten to yet.

I'm less concerned with length and the like, because the stress of full-time uni and full-time work means I've only read maybe 4-5 books in the last two years. Having time to read and finishing a story is fantastic, no matter how long it is. :)

message 77: by Rose (new)

Rose My goal is to read 80 books. That was my goal last year, and I reached it by reading 92 books.

message 78: by Deann (new)

Deann Doolittle My goal has also come down this year. Last year my goal was 100 books. I read 120 but I was also depressed and did nothing but go back to bed and read all day long. This year I am putting my goal at 54 books for myself (I found a reading challenge on pinterest that I'm planning on doing) plus I plan on reading at least 15 Newberry Award winning books with my girls. Any more that I read will just be an added bonus.

message 79: by Kelly Brigid ♡ (new)

Kelly Brigid ♡ I barely developed an interest in reading two years ago (how, awful!), and successfully read 50 books last year (including 7 short stories), in my first reading challenge. This year I want to read 60 books. :)

message 80: by Laurie (new)

Laurie I'm terrible setting goals and meeting them. I always set them higher then I can achieve. My goal for 2015 is to read at least 12 books.

message 81: by Mochajunkie (new)

Mochajunkie We've been doing some work around the house. I had to empty some bookshelves to move them. I discovered several books that I had never read. I would like to say that I will buy no more new books this year until I finish what I have, but I don't think that is reasonable.

I will create a new shelf of 'want to read - already own' and aim to read 24 of them this year.

message 82: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 01, 2015 11:12AM) (new)

Add me to the list of people who are slowing down the pace a bit in 2015 :) I read around 125 books in 2014, around the same amount in 2013 and in 2012 I read over 300 book, a personal best. But, while I was reading larger quantities of books, many of them weren't very 'deep', and I'd forget about them as soon as I finished them. The page number average was also smaller (very rarely would I read a book that had more than 300 pages).

I've decided to change focus, and I'll be working through Boxall's 1001 Book List (2012 edition). The list is composed mostly of literary fiction, award winners and Classics. There's also some massive books on the list as well, including several that are over 1,000 pages.

My 2015 reading goal is 45 books, the smallest year long goal I've ever made, but I'll be focusing on books that make me think, that will challenge me, and that will really broaden my reading horizons!

That's my new motto too :)

message 84: by Marijke (new)

Marijke This year I want to read 52 books; every week a book. In 2014 I didn't read as much as I wanted (though I read maaaaany manga). 2015 will be the year of the books. (:

message 85: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem I was going to make my goal 70, of which seven would apply to the BIG book challenge (400+ pgs), but now it sounds a little crazy. So for my 2015 challenge I will keep a low number since I want to tackle Infinite Jest this year. =D

message 86: by Marwa (new)

Marwa Hassan This year, I am going to change my strategy. It's no matter how many books to read , It's depend on the knowledge that you get from , on the last 2 years I read more than a 100 books but what I still remember is not that equivalent to 100 books , This year I preferred to concentrate on a book / week ,with rate 4/month and 48 / year, Especially, That I have other academic tasks more than before. By the way, I wish to read more than I am challenging myself to
Here we start the challenge,
Good Luck for every one !

message 87: by Viola (new)

Viola I set a small goal in 2014 and surpassed it. This year I am going to increase the number to 24 which is still small but doable. In 2014, the typical romance bored me so I read other genres and discovered I liked the change. I am going to focus on reading classics, thrillers, more non fiction, and the occasional romance. I love book series, so I'll add one or two in the mix. When stumped on what to read, ask for suggestions. That helped last year. Good luck and happy reading!

message 88: by Colin (new)

Colin Mitchell I'd like to exceed the 29051 pages of 2014.

message 89: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I love that I found this last year! Since I'm a slow reader, I made a goal to read 6 books last year, and I reached that goal. I realized I could have read more, but I just didn't give myself the time to, and wasted it doing other things.

So This year, I have a goal of 12 books, one book a month. I already have 5-6 books in mind of what to read this year, and got my fiance joining me on the challenge.

message 90: by J. (new)

J. I've started a little email publishing company and that's going to claim a lot of my time, of course. So my yearly goal is shrinking significantly. Never thought of counting books by pages; might have to give that a try.

Oh, and do we have a 2015 Reading Challenge widget yet? My blog looks so empty without one.

message 91: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Marina wrote: "Last year i finished to read 304 novels.. so i hope i can set 700 books for this year (400 novels and 300 japan comics).. i'm so excited!

I am so envious that you can read that many books!! How is the world do you do it? I'm completely over the moon jealous!!!

message 92: by Deb (new)

Deb Great to see everyone challenging themselves. As for myself, I'm just getting back into reading books again. I'm going to turn off the T.V. more and turn onto books more. :) That's for me and right now, I'll challenge myself to read 1 book a month, if I'm lucky, maybe 2. LOL Good luck with your "2015" goals everyone. Let's do it - we know we can. Happy New Year!

message 93: by NON (new)

NON For last year, I gave myself a goal to read 180 (39046 pages) and I achieved that a week before the year ended. Woot! ^_^
This year, however, I'm planing to read books that have many pages (most of my books are 400 pages and above with the expectation of light novels and manga) so I aim for 100 this year.

message 94: by Ebb (last edited Jan 01, 2015 01:53PM) (new)

Ebb My goal is going to be quality over quantity. I'm setting my goal low but I have a personal goal and list of books that I've been meaning to read for a long time and books that I have started and never finished. My goal is to finish that list. I also need to get back to reading mainly nonfiction (history) which is my favorite genre but for the past two years I've gotten caught up in reading a lot of good fiction. It's been a great two years but I need to get back to my first love :) I won't completely exclude fiction this year but I'm definitely going to tone it down a bit. Last year I read 72 books. This year I'm toning it down to 30 because I plan on reading longer books as well.

message 95: by Karen (new)

Karen Drammeh I do most of my reading in the car via audiobooks. I've been doing mostly light stuff lately (mysteries, young adult, sci-fi/fantasy) but would like to delve a bit deeper this year. Just joined this site and hope it will prompt me when I'm looking for my next book.

message 96: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Brown My goal is to read more than last year. I'd also like to read more books by local authors.I read a good bit in 2014 but I plan to make more time for reading in 2015. First on my list is to reread Cory's Way by A.J Brown. Reading it once just wasn't enough. It's really good.

As far as I know re-reads only count if not read in the same year. I was wondering more for the example of I read book in series in January, next book comes out in October since I have read so much in between I will refresh my memory by reading the one from January and as of last years challenge Goodreads won't count the re-read towards the challenge. I am working my way up to the book a day :-) Maybe when my kids are grown up.
