It's simple: Set a goal of how many books you want to read this year, and we'll help you keep track of it. How many books will you be pledging?
After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we know what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.
- Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase the number of books later.
- Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).
- Reading shouldn't feel like a chore. Remember, this challenge is all about what you want to read. But don't take our word for it: See what these experts have to say.

- Rereading counts! So by all means, go ahead and dive into those old favorites.
- Listen to audiobooks. This is a great way to read more and multitask.
- Check out books at your local library so it's easier to start your next book. Add your local library's website to your Book Links to request a book and have it ready for pickup later.
- Keep yourself accountable. Sharing an activity with others makes you more likely to focus. Join one of our thousands of reading groups devoted to a range of topics, themes, and genres.
- Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next. You can also create custom bookshelves for easy sorting.

- Scroll through Goodreads' News and Interviews for articles on new books, favorite authors, and more.
- Look back at the 2018 Goodreads Choice Awards for more than 400 reader-approved winners and nominees across 21 categories.
- Browse thousands of reading lists on Listopia.

12 but hopefully I'll be able to increase that.

I just noticed that. It's a shame they did away with it. Seeing that little bar progress as you read was my motivator.
In 2018, I was 31/35 (I tend to go for the marathon novels that take an eternity). As I was just shy of that goal, I decided to go for it again, and see if I can hit that 35 this year.
Alex wrote: "What happened to the "update progress" button under "currently reading" books on one's homepage? That always drove me to keep on reading!"Same! I love that feature. It motivated me so much. I'd like to know what happened to it as well.
Iset wrote: "Update button has disappeared for me too. It's a definite annoyance. Now I can't quickly and easily update my progress anymore. Bring it back, GoodReads!"I agree!!
New goal for this year!! Up it to 150!!!! Let's Go 2019.. I'm already one down!!! LOL Look at me go!!!Happy Reading y'all!!!
I plan to read 25 books this year. Last year I aimed for 24 and read 17. It was the most books I’ve read in a long time and felt really great to do!
Just joined goodreads and this is the first time I’m doing this challenge. My goal is 10 but definitely hoping for more.
I realized you can still update your progress under "review" when clicking on the book directly. Why Goodreads would make something more complicated than it was before is beyond me.Except they somehow want to increase clicks on the site of the respective book. Monitoring purposes? Maybe clicks are counted while updating the status of a book is not?

Why ?
ha ha ha oh God how do I unfollow this thread? Is this what the rest of my Goodreads life is going to be like? people posting numbers? In other news I always find it hilarious how we manage to find silly ways to make ourselves feel superior to others. Audiobooks are "cheating" well, aren't you just great!
Bummed about the loss of conveniently updating reading progress and seeing percentages on the home page.

535 for 2018 - yes, seriously.but that was insane and i counted everything - big books, little books, kid books, adult books, cookbooks, knitting books, audiobooks, red books, blue books... i split boxed sets into individual titles too.
every dog walk, every hike, every car ride was an opportunity to listen to normal audiobook or use kindle's text-to-speech feature. every 5-10 minutes spent waiting in lobbies or checkout lines was an opportunity to catch up on a short book or novella or kids book.
but it did come at a cost - less netflixing, less knitting, less no-input downtime for the brain.
for 2019, i'm aiming for 300 books, starting with the books in my 'want to read' shelf that don't have page numbers listed, because i find them irksome. anything else is incidental and bonus. happy new year y'all!

omg, how can you did that? I can't imagine where is your time for job, activity...?
I read 62 in 2017, 87 in 2018, and my goal for 2019 is - 40 :DSeriously, no stress. I will up the goal if life is not too busy.
Besides, I do feel like audiobooks, childrens books and mangas are a bit of cheating...
Oh man I wish I could read as many books as you all. With 4 kids I can only read at night till my eyes give out lol
I'm going to aim for the same number I did last year...32. And I am so jealous of those of you who have time to read such a large number of books as what I see posted here!!! :=)
Since last year what I do is start small and then as I see at what rate I read, how much time I have... I go increase the challenge!Probably start with 30 like last year.
112 - I had set my goal at 120 for 2018 and missed it by two. So instead of stressing myself trying to meet that goal again I’m reducing my number slightly with hopes of going over. 😀
I'm gonna try to read 100 books this year, didn't make it last year due to LIFE, but this is a NEW Year!
My usual 50 books. Always make this goal....plus a few. This to include 4 from CLSS booklist - I am a member.
80 books. I usually read 1-2 books at a time, I listen to audio books with my hubby on our twice a month trips to Las Vegas to drop off our grandsons with their dad. I read 2 books a month each with my grandsons that we discuss so they will test well at school. I also read 6 board books a day with my granddaughters that I don't even count as they are the same books each day (the girls are aged 1 and 2). All though, yesterday we read "Peppa the Pig" which was a new one. The 2 year old has started pointing out things in the book and corrects me if I add words. I love this time with them. Three of my four grandsons read at least two years above their grade levels. Sadly, the oldest doesn't read much any more.
24 but I'm planning to be strategic with a lot of poetry, graphic novels and audiobooks this year so I think I'll do better than I think :)

I agree that it is not a competition. I read a lot at night when I can't sleep. I would probably read more except I have to do things like cook for my family and clean once in awhile :-)
