Want to Read More Books in 2019? Take the Goodreads Reading Challenge!

Posted by Marie on January 1, 2019
"Read more books" is a popular New Year's resolution, but—call us biased—we think it should be the only resolution you make. Because what's more fun and rewarding than reading amazing books? And to help you, we have the 2019 Goodreads Reading Challenge!

It's simple: Set a goal of how many books you want to read this year, and we'll help you keep track of it. How many books will you be pledging?

After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we know what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.

Pro Tips for Reaching Your Goal:

Plan Accordingly

  • Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase the number of books later.

  • Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).

  • Reading shouldn't feel like a chore. Remember, this challenge is all about what you want to read. But don't take our word for it: See what these experts have to say.

Alex Cooper What happened to the "update progress" button under "currently reading" books on one's homepage? That always drove me to keep on reading!

message 23: by Renate (new)

Renate this time 50 books!

message 24: by Anna (new)

Anna This is the first year my partner is joining me in the challenge! He hasn't had a lot of free time to read lately (in the past few years, I should say), but we've just moved in together, so I'm hoping we'll get a lot of reading done together. :)
This year I also want to add Spanish to the list of languages in which I can read fluently- I recently came across an original of Márquez's "The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor" and Funakoshi's "Karate-Do" in Spanish, so while it will slow my progress considerably, I'm really excited to get to those and feel comfortable calling myself trilingual again. <3

message 25: by Tyler (new)

Tyler J Gray 65! I read 144 in 2018 and 100 in 2017 so I know I can do it, I just don't want to stress myself out over it (and possibly read some longer books!). 65 is also 1.25 a week.

message 27: by CJS (new)

CJS Read 171 in 2018, first year of retirement. I was going for 175, but only got 5 books read in the past 6 weeks (I hated one that took almost a month, but can’t quit a book without finishing)

message 28: by Iset (new)

Iset Update button has disappeared for me too. It's a definite annoyance. Now I can't quickly and easily update my progress anymore. Bring it back, GoodReads!
