After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we know what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.
- Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase the number of books later.
- Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).
- Reading shouldn't feel like a chore. Remember, this challenge is all about what you want to read. But don't take our word for it: See what these experts have to say.

- Rereading counts! So by all means, go ahead and dive into those old favorites.
- Listen to audiobooks. This is a great way to read more and multitask.
- Check out books at your local library so it's easier to start your next book. Add your local library's website to your Book Links to request a book and have it ready for pickup later.
- Keep yourself accountable. Sharing an activity with others makes you more likely to focus. Join one of our thousands of reading groups devoted to a range of topics, themes, and genres.
- Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next. You can also create custom bookshelves for easy sorting.

- Scroll through Goodreads' News and Interviews for articles on new books, favorite authors, and more.
- Look back at the 2018 Goodreads Choice Awards for more than 400 reader-approved winners and nominees across 21 categories.
- Browse thousands of reading lists on Listopia.

I really don't feel that reading any type of book is cheating. I listen to audiobooks while driving as it would be unsafe to drive and read at the same time. :-) I have to go with my hubby to Las Vegas twice a month to drop off our grandsons at their dads and it is a 4 hour drive each way (after an already long day). My hubby and I listen to books on the way home to help keep us awake. I read with my grandsons each week and they are not short books. They are both reading at 7th grade levels and having to test on the books. We discuss the books so they will do well on their tests. I don't count the children's board books that I read with my granddaughters but other books I read with them are counted as they do take time away from reading my books.
What type of books do you like to read? I love mysteries but also read lots of others so I don't get in a rut. I love biographies on past presidents.
I like the comment "65 is 1.25 per week" so I will aim for that. this is my first challenge so hope I am not overreaching! I have no idea how many books I actually read, but I do know that it is not nearly as many as I WANT to read. The competition is with myself. Best wishes to all!!

What an awesome goal. I'd love to read more but I watch my grandchildren in the afternoons so that does cut into my reading.
"Check out books at your local library so it's easier to start your next book. Add your local library's website to your Book Links to request a book and have it ready for pickup later."This is AMAZING!!!!! I wish I had know about this feature before. I am so glad I found out about this. Thank you for allowing me to link directly to my library. This is life changing.
I'm going for 100. My goal last year was 75, and I read 97. That was a personal best. At least half of those were children's books in our education program. I love that reading is part of my work. I also read many are graphic novels.
At the end of the challenge year, I love to see the number of PAGES I've read! That's meaningful to me, as some books are so much longer than others.
I have no idea how many books I read per year because I read when the spirit moves me - I think 24 will be a good start for me.
I will commit to 24. That's 2 a month. Considering I knit, paint and my daughter and grandchildren are moving in with us next month, this is about all i can do (including audio books). :)
I am going to start with 25! Traveling a lot this year so hopefully I will get off Netflix Series and read more 😳
I turned off cable three years ago and have no internet at home so for 2018 I read 269 books. Love to read when not at work. Will try for a bit more this year
I'm going to try listening to audiobooks this year; see if I can get through all books from the A shelf at the library, possibly the B's if I manage
Going to read 72 books, one for each year I've lived. My biggest problem is getting back to the website to record my books! I read when I travel, rather than text or watch movies.
Will commit to 12. Every extra book I read will be a bonus and help to set a higher reading goal for next year.
bring back the update button to where it was. It keeps me motivated. Will read 80 for the challenenge
Read 120 last year, with a goal of 100. I think I'll stick with the same goal, because I have several very long books I want to get into this year!
52 books is a perfect number for me. I tend to read books that require attention to detail ... haven’t read a “romance novel” in years. I just finished The Great Halifax Explosion by John U. Bacon ... excellent!
I'd really like to be able to add subgoals onto this! My total goal is 60, but I'd also like to read 12 by an author of color and 20 nonfiction. There's no way to track those in here.
Alex wrote: "What happened to the "update progress" button under "currently reading" books on one's homepage? That always drove me to keep on reading!"I know I hate that it is missing. It keeps me motivated to see the graph of how far I am in a book. Also where is the link that you can see your history of reading progress on a book? I like to see when I 'got in the chase' of a book and couldn't put it down.
60 Books for me this year. I do hope I surpass it just because there are so many more on my Want to Read List.
Belinda wrote: "If you read a series box set with 7 books in it does it count as 1 or 7?"i find the individual titles and count it as all of them. a boxed set is just a selling feature, a convenience, but there are still however many individual titles inside...
I think I'm going to go for 10 books this year. I'm impressed by other's replies for their number of books. WOW.
Two actual challenges in the commitment to 300 books: 1. Re/reading 300 books I have for sale won't be hard. Fixing the Paypal/Amazon security problem may be. I've been doing book reviews six days a week; will resume when security problem is resolved.
2. How many new books will customers & e-friends allow me to add to the list? How many of the 300 books will come out of storage boxes? How many living authors will the challenge encourage?
