Book Review Wednesday | Between Girlfriends by Elizabeth Dean

I foundthis book, Between Girlfriends by Elizabeth Dean,in a box my wife had out in storage. It’s one of several lesbian fiction titles that I selected to read, then donate to the needy gay folk in the surrounding cities. The idea intrigued me: “They’re here. They’re queer. They’re also outrageous, unstoppable, fashionable, hilarious, insightful, and hopeful… [A] woman’s best defense is always the comfort shared between girlfriends.”

I thought it would be a fun, quick read, so I cracked the...

The Ghoul Next Door | Weekly Flash Fiction

I got the inspiration for this week’s dark comedy story from Inspiration Monday, and I think that any introduction would just spoil the surprise.

The Ghoul Next Door

The day Shyla Kutner died, I was ecstatic.

No, I was elated. Enraptured? Jubilant. That’s not right either. That came after. Let me start again.

The day Shyla Kutner died was the happiest day of my life.

Do you mind if I smoke? Thanks. Where was I? Oh, yes, the day she died.

It was a glistening day in early January. The stillne...

Book Review Wednesday | Nala’s Story by Mark Gardner

Mark Gardner is the kind of author who keeps you coming back for more by feeding you bit by bit of an engaging tale. That’s what he initially did with Nala’s Story, over on his blog, Article 94. I followed each entry into this novelette like a hound with the scent of blood on her nose. I wanted more.

nalas story

My first look at Nala was in Mark Gardner’s novel, Champion Standing. When I read that book, I knew he had crafted a tale that lent itself to many off-shoots, sequels, and prequels, so I wasn’t...

The Last Pick | Weekly Flash Fiction

This week’s prompts, Wendy Strain’s WOW555 and Inspiration Monday by Stephanie Orges, led to an amusing littletale about a group of… well, I’m not really even sure. You tell me: what are the little buggers?

leaves

The Last Pick

The bright lights and loud music had drawn them in. Finnegan said they were like junebugs, bouncing around the crowd, sticking on in a jovial act of sober drunkenness just long enough to take what they wanted. They knew it was true, and so did most in the crowd, but events...

Book Review Wednesday | The Anastasia Syndrome and Other Stories by Mary Higgins Clark

Despite my love for suspense, thrillers, and mystery stories, I have never read anything by Mary Higgins Clark before. But when I saw The Anastasia Syndrome and Other Stories at a library book sale, for some reason, I knew I should buy it. And I’m so glad that I did.

The Anastasia Syndrome and Other Stories Mary Higgins Clark

The book was published in 1989, when I was only five years old andhad just learnedto read. Surprisingly, though, it still holds up, even with all the technological changes that have exploded in the world since it was written.

It...

The Pants Plot and a Maladaptation Update

A few days ago, I found myself in a discussion with fellow writer (and my friend), Mark Gardner, aboutthe age old question:Plotor Pants? He wrote about one of his current works-in-progress, Victorious Maiden, and how he solves the Plot/Pants dilemma. Ingeniously, he combines them to suit his particular writing style, andnew writers could learn a lot from him on proliferation.

It made me think about my own journey writing Maladaptation. It has been literally years since I started writing it. W...
