Sunday Serials | Debate the Case, Part III
“Mrs. Rusa, are you there?” Donna Lee Handy asked her guest. All traces of her smile were gone, and on her brow, heavily lined from years of hard frowns, was her trademark crease of dissatisfaction. “I asked if it was a coincidence that you searched for the exact details that would match the scene of your wife’s murder.”
“I’m here,” Gennie Rusa said through a clog of tearfulness. She cleared her throat. “That’s not true.”
Donna looked down at the paper and started to read....

Elegy to a Space Opera | And Now For Something Completely Different
This week’s Word a Week and terribleminds Flash Fiction Challenge gave me a strange idea. Instead of flash fiction, why not write poetry? It isn’t a form that I often use, but sometimes, I think it helps to kind of scramble my brains back into usefulness.
Here’s “Elegy to a Space Opera“:
O Captain! my Captain! there’s something on the wing;
Bachelorhood has weathered every rack, and he remains as one;
A daring kiss aired, yet no one cared, the ship kept right on flying:
But O heart! heart! he...

Debate the Case, Part II
Music cued the beginning of the real meat of her show, and Donna tried to clear her mind. She shook her head, rolled her shoulders, and stretched her mouth into a wide O. Then she cleared her throat, took a drink of her tea, and sat staring at the camera as the cameraman counted her to one.
“And we’re back. Today we’re going to have a look at the Rusa case. I have with me live over satellite Mrs. Gennie Rusa, wife of the victim, Mrs. Chanel...

Boxshot: 3D Book Cover Generator | Tips for Self-Published Authors
Back in August, Joleene Naylor published a post on Self-Published Authors Helping Other Authors about 3D cover generators. I thought it sounded fun, so I decided to give it a go.
There are other 3D cover generators (she actually discusses another one in her post), but I decided that Boxshot was the one I would try. It seemed easy enough, and I liked the images that she created. At the time, I was still in the last editing phase of Maladaptation, but I was eager to feel like I had made some re...

Book Review Wednesday | NeuroTribes by Steve Silberman
Autism is a subject close to my heart, because I know and love two autistic people, and I struggle daily to understand the trials they endure simply living life with those of us who fall on the neurotypical side of thehuman spectrum. Sometimes it’s painful to watch; at other times, as they overcome their obstacles, it brings me intense joy and pride at their accomplishments and determination.
When I saw that Netgalley was offering a copy of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of...

Dog Gone | Weekly Flash Fiction
This week, I have a story earlier than I normally would to share with you all. In the middle of editing a manuscript, I like to take frequent breaks to keep my mind sharp, and tonight I just felt like writing.
My inspiration came from three sources: my own Word a Weekchallenge, Inspiration Monday, and WOW555. This story happens in the same universe as my Deviant Behaviors book series, a few months before Maladaptation takes place.
Dog Gone
“How the hell did they get it in there?”
“By all ac...

Sunday Serials | Debate the Case, Part I
Readers who come to this blog on a regular basis know that I post flash fiction usually once a week in response to prompts from such sources as WOW555, Inspiration Monday, and terribleminds. These pieces seem to get a lot of responses from you guys, so I wanted to try to add another weekly feature that might feed the need for short fiction.
Some of the blogs I follow, like Mark Gardner’s Article94, haveserial stories that span multiple posts, sometimes going for days or weeks. I always wanted...

Just Desserts | Weekly Flash Fiction
This week’s prompt started out as a flash piece I wrote some time ago. I originally thought the story had been written as far as it could go, but with this week’s prompt from Wendy at WOW555, I realized that I could delve a little further.
The white sand blistered her feet as she trudged toward the complex. She had only a small amount of rations, but for those she was grateful. The old woman hadn’t owed her anything when she went begging on her doorstep, yet she had been welcomed into her h...
