OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This week’s word is:

proletarian– (adjective) 1. pertaining or belonging to the proletariat. 2. (in ancient Rome) belonging to the lowest or poorest class of the people.

(noun) 3. a member of the proletariat.

This word reminds me of 1984, but that’s not where I got it from. It actually came, as several of my WaW words have, from Middlesex.

I look forward to the pieces this vocabulary word spawn...

Baiting Moxie | WOW555 Flash Fiction

Since its inception, I’ve been a big fan of Wendy Strain’s WOW555 flash fiction challenge. Unfortunately, I haven’t always been able to participate, which is a real shame, because I find that I do some of my best flash writing in participating there. That’s why this week I was determined to take part, and I even set aside time in my schedule just to work on this prompt, which brought me into a genre in which I sometimes dabble.

Book Review Wednesday | The Art of Work by Jeff Goins

I’m not sure what prompted me to pick up a copy of The Art of Work by Jeff Goins. Maybe it was advertised in an e-mail newsletter, or it could have been recommended to me on Amazon, or it could have been dropped on my doorstep by the ghost of Poor Richard himself. Whatever the case, I’m really glad I got a chance to read this book, and I plan to read it again — more than once, if necessary.

Elevator Club | Weekly Flash Fiction

It’s that time again. I finally snagged enough time to sit down, collect some weekly prompts, and put my fingers to the keys. This story comes from several prompts: Sunday Photo Fiction, Today’s Author: Write Now, Inspiration Monday, and my own Word a Week.

(Check out the links if you’re looking for creative inspiration. There are a lot of great prompts out there, but these were what spoke to me this week, and I’d love to see what my fellow writers can create with the same inspiration.)

It wa...

Book Review Wednesday | The Mud People: A Parable of Recovery

A long time ago, I had a therapist that recommended that I find and read a book called The Mud People. She promised that, if read with an open mind and heart, I would find solace and hope within the pages. She told me it might be hard to find, but it would be worth it to my recovery from years of abuse. Before I left that day, she gave me a copy of the scan of the book cover, and made me promise to try to find it.

It has been probably five years since that day, and I didn’t actually get my h...

A New Celebration | Flash Fiction for WOW555 and WriteNow Challenges

In honor of America’s upcoming Fourth of July celebration, I decided tocombine the WOW555 and WriteNow challenges in a holiday-inspired piece of fiction. I don’t believe I’ve ever written from the perspective of a non-humanoid, so it was a fun exercise, and I hope you all enjoy reading it. Without further introduction, here’s the story:
