Sunday Serials | Debate the Case, Part V
[Part I] | [Part II] | [Part III] | [Part IV]
Dramatic music played, lights swirled, and then fell to a flattering shimmer around her. For her part, Donna Lee Handy sat unmoving, the hint of a sarcastic smile on her face, as if she hadn’t had a hand in all the effects around her. As pictures of the Rusas faded in and out on the screen, she gave a slight nod now and again, but stayed silent as a soft, mournful song by an indie jazz artist played. When it was over, Donna leaned back and put on...

Plan B [Circuit Freaks, Part II] | Weekly Flash Fiction
On Monday, as Mark Gardner kindly pointed out, I didn’t post a Word a Week prompt. I didn’t do much over what I decided would be my long weekend (Friday afternoon through Monday night) because I was celebrating my birthday. That’s right, folks, I’m another year older!
So this week’s story is in response to only one prompt, Wendy Strain’s WOW555, in which she asked us to write about an orchard. Since I won last week, and since I really liked where the story was going, I chose to continue Circu...

Book Review Wednesday | When the Lights Go Out Anthology
A few days ago, I mentioned that a Halloween anthology featuring a story I wrote was available. It’s called When the Lights Go Out, and it was put out by the Ink Slingers’ League. The twenty-five stories within this anthology have something for everyone. Are ghosts your thing? They’re here in droves. Do vampires give you a thrill? They’re included, too.
For those of you like me who have a dark sense of humor, there are even a few dark comedy and parody stories. (My own story, “An Arm and a Le...

Sunday Serials | Debate the Case, Part IV
[Part I] | [Part II] | [Part III]
Quentin Woolridge presented his face to the makeup artist for powder and a touch-up of his faintly tinted lip color. Beside him, Donna Lee Handy sat nursing a cup of coffee as she read over the facts she had gathered. Between leaks in the police department, tabloids, and interviews of anyone connected to the case, she had amassed more clues than she thought she would, but an important piece was missing. For all her posturing, she still wasn’t sure Gennie Rusa...

The Evolution of Maladaptation | A Gif
In an effort to make my blog more accessible and enjoyable to readers, I have been trying strategies off and on that I have read about online, and this post gave me something to chew on recently. It has a load of cool resources, but the one that stuck out to me the most was Make a Gif.
As soon as I realized you couldcreate a gif from almost anything, I knew I had to make one that showcased the evolution of the cover for Maladaptation. Since it’s been my pet project for so long (over two years...

Circuit Freaks | Weekly Flash Fiction
I have three inspirations for my weekly flash fiction this week. My own Word a Week challenge, Inspiration Monday, and WOW555. If you haven’t already participated, Word a Week and Inspiration Monday are stillon!I am pretty close to the deadline, but I got it in just under the wire for the 5PM deadline.
Circuit Freaks
Condensation dripped off the edge of the pipe nearest her, and Aquarius swiped at it with the sleeve of her hoodie. Losing her grip would only mean another trip to the back alley...

“When the Lights Go Out” is Available Now For Download
I was going to write something about this, but it looks like Rami Ungar already said all that needs to be said. My story, “An Arm and a Leg,” is featured in this new anthology.
Originally posted on Rami Ungar The Writer:
Well, I didn’t know this was happening so soon, but I guess it’s an early treat, which is always better than an early trick. The latest anthology from the Ink Slingers’ League, When The Lights Go Out (also known as WTLGO for the sake of keeping things short), has...

What Color is Your Parachute? (Non-fiction) | Book Review Wednesday
Since I’ve recently been toying with the idea of giving up the career path — the IT path — that I’ve been on for the past several years in favor of writing for a living, this book popping up as a recommendation was something like kismet. It’s a self-help book designed for exactly that purpose: as a guide for peopleto help themselves out of a career rut by figuring out what their perfect career is, and how to land a job within that field (or a closely related one.)
“This helpful manual shares...

Word a Week | Week 29
Welcome to the 29thinstallment of Word a Week. You can find the other Word a Week words here.
This week’s word is:
inimical– (adjective)1. adverse in tendency or effect; unfavorable; harmful. 2. unfriendly; hostile.
This is one of those words whose meaning always caused me some confusion. For some reason, I assumed it was more along the lines of “friendly” or “comical.”
