Phoenix, Part V| Sunday Serials

This story has been brewing inside me for a long time. It took quite a while for me to poke and prod the characters into telling me what they were fighting for — and about. But it’s finally coming to a close this week, and I have to say I’m kind of proud of it. For fans of stories that end Happily Ever After, I have to apologize. Here’s the last part of “Phoenix.”

Phoenix, Part V

[Part I | Part II | Part III | Part IV]

A crudely-pointed weapon was at her throat before she knew it, and her e...

Weekly Flash Fiction | Goody Two-Faces

This week’s flash fiction was inspired by a prompt by Our Write Side author, A.L. Mabry, for her regular feature, Coldly Calculating. The prompt was called “Knocking Down Miss Goody Two-Shoes.” I may have interpreted it a little broadly, but I think this story does it justice, and it was a BLAST to write.

Goody Two-Faces

“Third place, with 102 votes, Anna Courts!”

Breathe.

“Second place, with 144 votes, Fiona Lancette!”

Are you breathing?

“And first place, with 189 votes, is the girl we all...

What Should I Post? | A Poll

As the year draws to a close, I couldn’t help but start to go back through all my posts for the year and see that some of my regular features weren’t drawing much attention. I can only assume that these posts weren’t what my readers wanted to see, so I’ve decided to change some of them up.

Of my regular features, the ones that I am definitely keeping are Book Review Wednesday, Weekly Flash Fiction, and Serial Sunday. My question to all of you is this: Is there something else you want to see h...

Book Review Wednesday | Eight the Hard Way

Eight the Hard Way was one of those short story collections I grabbed while it was available for free on Amazon. Anthologies like this are great if you’re looking for new authors to read, and this one was no exception. It boasts “eight thrilling stories from eight masters of suspense.”

The first, “Paydown” by Nick Stephenson, centers on criminologist Leopold Blake’s first ever murder investigation. Wall Street, algorithms, snark, and murder are on the menu for this tale, and it delivers the p...

Phoenix, Part IV | Sunday Serials

If you have been following Sunday Serials here at AdanRamie.com, you will be familiar with this story. “Phoenix” is the story of a child leader, a girl who must lead others like her to a new era, where they are treated with respect instead of scrutiny and violence. There will only be one part past this one, so catch up while you can. The 20th will bring a whole new story.

Phoenix, Part IV

[Part I | Part II | Part III]

“Your kind isn’t welcome here.”

The boy’s voice was cold. He held his tor...

Apologetic Offerings | About my missing posts this month…

For those of you who have been following along with me this month, you might have noticed that posts were sporadic, missing, or out of place. The only thing I have in way of explanation is that NaNoWriMo stole my brain.

In November, I finished the first draft of the second book in my Deviant Behaviors series, Cluster B. It picks up just about where Maladaptation leaves off, though there will be a short story in between that I’ll be releasing separately sometime early next year that will tie t...

Book Review Wednesday | Tall Order! and Prosperity for Writers Productivity Journal

In early November, I joined self-help guru Honoree Corder’s advanced reading team. Two of the books I wanted to read immediately were Tall Order! and the Prosperity for Writers Productivity Journal.

Tall Order! Seven Master Strategies to Organize Your Life and Double Your Success in Half the Timeis a great inspirational resource. These seven strategies include visualizing your goals, a 100-day action plan, and advice on how to find the right mentor.

The goal of Tall Order! is to help entrepre...

Weekly Flash Fiction | A little taste of Cluster B… (And a sale!)

This week, instead of a new standalone story, I decided to follow Chuck Wendig’s prompt and give you a taste of the second book in my Deviant Behaviors seriesthat picks up whereMaladaptation left off. Here’s a little snippet of the rough, unedited draft of Cluster B:

Harry saw the lights and avoided them. If anyone saw her, she would be screwed, and her case would likely be decided long before she ever saw the police board. Instead she kept to the side streets and alleys with her head ducked...

Book Review Wednesday | Phone Kitten by Marika Christian

This was one of those books that I’m not sure where I got it, or when I got it, but it was on my Kindle carousel and sounded like a fun read, so I started reading it on a whim. And, wow, I sure am glad I bought it! This book was funny, smart, and while it had suspense and mystery, a very light read.

Phone Kitten by Marika Christian is listed as “Nancy Drew meets Bridget Jones,” and I can see where readers have drawn that comparison from. The main character, Emily, is a former big girl who has...

Word a Week | Week 37

Welcome to the 37thinstallment of Word a Week! You can find the other Word a Week words here.

For those of us in America, Thanksgiving is coming up. I have a love/hate relationship with Thanksgiving. I love it because of the food. Who doesn’t love all that junk? Turkey sandwiches for days!

But I also feel really conflicted. Thanksgiving represents the breaking of bread between the white interlopers and the indigenous people who lived here. I find it difficult to celebrate the fact that one gr...
