Ground Zero | Fiction Friday

This week’s Fiction Friday was spawned from two prompts. The first, my own, was to look more into the backstory of one of my favorite characters in my Deviant Behaviors series, Detective Harry Thresher. The second prompt came from author Chuck Wendig. His challenge was to 1,000 wordsbased on a random Flickr image.

The image above (“. baby it’s cold outside,” by the user fernotte) caught my eye immediately, and started telling me a story that happened before Cluster B or Maladaptation. I hope...

Til Death Do Us Part by Stephanie Ayers | Book Review Wednesday

Til Death Do Us Part by Stephanie Ayers is an action-packed drama that dips into the lives of a cast of characters who all have some connection to one diamond ring. Unfortunately for everyone whose lives are touched by this seemingly innocuous piece of jewelry, it brings with it aspark of darknessthat shoots a crack through each of them at their core, leaving each ofthem reeling from grief – or worse.

When Ian buys Elizabeth a Tiffany’s engagement ring, he unwittingly sets off a series of dea...

If You Like A, You’ll Like B | Mention Monday

I mentioned earlier this month that things are changing around my blog. In order to make readers happier, I will be testing out several new regular post topics until some start to stick. One of those regular topics will be dual-purpose. Mention Mondays will come twice each month; the first will be “If You Liked A, You’ll Like B,” with A and B being books, stories, movies, genres, or even foods. (The second will be discussed later in the month.)

So, for this first installment of Mention Monday...

7 Ways to Keep Your Name on Their Lips, Part 2 | Serial Sunday

Before I begin again this week, I want to make one thing perfectly clear: I do not sympathize with murderers, especially not with those who kill innocent strangers.

That being said, something about this character seems so modern to me. She fits into the landscape like a puzzle piece. She seems as real to me as any of the bozos we all see on the news killing for the sake of a cause, whether its real or imagined. She also seems as real as every person whose name has become a hashtag in recent y...

The Accident | Fiction Friday

Instead of Weekly Flash Fiction, I’ve decided to post fiction strictly on Fridays and call it Fiction Friday. This limits me to post on just one day, and keeps me from letting my posting schedule drag. It also allows me to post any length of fiction I want in this space, whether 20 words or 20,000.

As for this week’s tale, I’m not quite sure where this story came from. It’s more of a vignette, a slice of life from the view of a disabled girl, than a true story. I only hope that I’ve handled t...

The Fallen Curtain by Ruth Rendell | Book Review Wednesday

My second anthology in as many months, this one was even more enjoyable than the last. This was one of those books that I had hoarded away in a box in the back of the closet after a library book sale. I had never heard of Ruth Rendell before, so I’m glad that the cover caught my eye.

WithinThe Fallen Curtain by RuthRendell areeleven mystery stories, including the one from which the anthology gets its name, are all slow-burning mystery gems.

“The Fallen Curtain” is the story of a boy whose lif...

5 Reasons to Give Up Coffee & 1 Reason They Don’t Matter | In Other Words Tuesday

Recently, in my quest to add moreheterogeneous posts, I came across a weekly challenge called In Other Words. The premise is simple: Patricia, blogger at Patricia’s Place, posts up a quote or word as a prompt. Our job as bloggers is to post a response, whether it be fiction, poetry, or opinion piece, based on the prompt.

Those who have been following my progress for a while know that I love just this kind of challenge. It’s regular, so it keeps me posting, and it opens me up to writing things...

7 Ways to Keep Your Name on Their Lips, Part 1 | Serial Sunday

Self-help. How to be stronger, smarter, faster, slimmer, better…. We’ve all seen the articles, blog posts, videos, and books that promise to help us all become something that we’re not. Some of this advice is good, but recycled. Some of it, though, can be downright dangerous if followed, especially if your motivation isn’t entirely positive.

That’s part of what inspired this month’s Serial Sunday. For the rest, I can give credit to my wife and the strange, spooky dreams that she has sometimes...

A Certain Type of Violence, Interview with Rami Ungar | Spotlight Saturday

As part of my blog revamp, I’ve added a few new monthly posts. One of those is Spotlight Saturday, a once-monthlyfeaturein which I will interview orhighlight an author or editor and their work. In the years I’ve been pursuing a writing career,I’ve gotten a lot of help and advice from the writing community, especially the self-publishing sect, and I really wanted to give back.

My first Spotlight Saturday author is Rami Ungar, author of the Reborn City series andSnake. He’s also a fellow Strang...
