Mention Monday was eaten; here are puppy pics instead.

Since I have no desire to write a brand new Mention Monday to replace the one the internet ate today, here are some pictures of my brand new puppy.

She’s a 7-week-oldYellow Lab/Basset Hound mix I named Busy after one of my favorite characters from Maladaptation, Take-Out, and Cluster B.

So far, she’s living up to her name; I couldn’t even get her to stay still long enough to get a good picture of her face.

Until next time, folks, it’s time for me t...

The Drunken Barista, Part 3 | Serial Sunday

Love is in the air, the sun is shining, everything is decorated in red and pink, heart-shaped glitter covers the ground upon which we walk…

Or not. This portion of the story wascreated through a couple of prompts, andis shorter than I thought it would be. That being said, it’san important piece of the Drunken Barista puzzle.

#2 –A Single Man
#3 –You Look Like…

Complex Characters with Joleene Naylor | Spotlight Saturday

I’m always on the lookout for an author whose style – whether it’s the way they put the words on the page, the kinds of stories they tell, or a particularly memorable character that they have created – stands out amongst all the books being published today. Now more than ever, readers can get their hands on any kind of book they want at an affordable price that is delivered straight to their door or e-reading device without any extra effort on their part.

It’s tough to dig an individual trenc...

Nerdy, Shy and Socially Inappropriate by Cynthia Kim | Book Review Wednesday

Say the word ‘autism,’ and you’ll get a prettybroad idea of what most people think that means. The first thing most people over 25 think of is Rain Man; for the younger crowd, characters like Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory come to mind. It’sa spread that makes sense, considering how many different flavors of autism there are on the spectrum, and the many people who have come out with their diagnostic or self-diagnosis. (Jerry Seinfeld is a notably self-diagnosed Aspie.)

So why do peo...

A Feast of Deviant Behaviors | Teaser Tuesday

I can’t believe it’s the middle of February. Where does the time go? I feel like I just finished writing my 2015 Wrap-Up post, and he we are on the crest ofthe third month of the year. The first quarter is halfway over, and so much is on the horizon in the months to come that I’m having trouble keeping track of it all. (I’m so thankful for the calendar function on my phone. Without it, I don’t know if anything would be finished on time!)

The Drunken Barista, Part 2 | Serial Sunday

Love is in the air, the sun is shining, everything is decorated in red and pink, heart-shaped glitter covers the ground upon which we walk…

Born from many prompts (the most recentof which I played fast and loose with), this little tale is not your typical love story. These people (for the most part) aren’t looking for love. Instead, they just want to spend the day forgetting all about the holiday that started with a massacre and ended up as a celebration of the fakest parts of dating, love, a...

The Drunken Barista, Part 1 | Serial Sunday

Love is in the air, the sun is shining, everything is decorated in red and pink, heart-shaped glitter covers the ground upon which we walk…

Yuck. Not everyone is a fan of Valentine’s Day. For some people, it’s a heartbreaking reminder of their own single status, and for others, it’s just a gross display of public affection that spreads more disease than Typhoid Mary on a bender.

Born from two prompts, this little tale is not your typical love story. These people (for the most part) aren’t loo...

The Tarnished Silver Lining of Rejection with Adrean Mesmer| Inside the Mind of an Editor

If authors have a hard road to tread, we must never forget that editors are trudging along beside us through the literary muck. All of us who have submitted work to an editor know the sting of the rejection letter. No one likes to be rejected; to have our story come back to us unwanted is like a slap to the face that says, “You didn’t do this right. And you call yourself an author!”

But an editor’s job is tough. They are tasked with reading everything that comes in – the dreck and the gold a...

Never Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth| Fiction Friday

This week’s Fiction Friday was spawned from two prompts: Be Kind Rewrite‘s Inspiration Monday (“stellar snarl“) and Our Write Side‘s Master Class Monday (“triggered penance“). I’d been toying with this idea since one of the Self-Publishing Podcast guys made an offhand comment about it on one of their recent podcasts. I don’t normally write in first person, but this story seemed to lend itself to just thatkind of pseudo-reflectiveness. Enjoy.

Burn, Rewrite, or Reread | Book Tag

Not long ago, I did an interview with fellow speculative fiction author Rami Ungar, so most of you will probably be familiar with his work. This week on his blog, he took part in something I’d never heard of called Book Tag, and tapped me in for the next round. I didn’t want to be a sore sport, so… here it is.

The instructions go like this:

Randomly choose three books.

Choose which of these three you would burn, rewrite, or reread.

Do three rounds of this, and then tag someone to do the book...
