A Quote to Live By | April Blogging Challenge

Sometime last month, someone posted a 30-day challenge for April that I really liked. I saved the picture, added dates into my posting calendar, and… promptly forgot who posted it, as well as deleted the photo.

The prompt for today was ‘a quote you try to live by,’ and it gave me pause. Do I have one of those? Am I the type to live by quotes or ideals, or am I just flapping in the wind? I had a long, hard think on it. I cruised some quote websites. And I finally came up with something that I...

A Mission of Helpfulness with Honorée Corder| Spotlight Saturday

In my journey to publication, many people have inspired me to reach further and take scary leaps of faith to make my dreams a reality, and today’s Spotlight author is one of the greats. Author, coach, and inspirational speaker, Honorée Corder is one of those people you can’t help but listen to, because you can hear the determination and wisdom in her voice.

The first time I heard her speak was on Joanna Penn’s Creative Penn podcast; as soon as the podcast was over, I looked her up, signed up...

Driving Oscar | Fiction Friday

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Fiction Friday story, so I thought you guys deserved something special. This is a story I’ve been working on for a while, but hadn’t quite found the right fit for it in an anthology or magazine.

Fans of horror, crime, and dark fiction, this one is for you.

Warning: This post contains potentially triggering content.

Published Fiction | #FirstLineFriday

I’ve been nudged a few times in the years that I’ve been blogging to take part in this or that blog game or tag post, and for the most part, I’ve obliged. I like to take part in the things people are doing and tagging each other in, because it’s a great way to bring the writing and reading communities together.

But, as many times as I’ve been tagged for #FirstLineFriday, I’ve never actually posted one.

Everything You Have is Mine (Lauren Laurano #1) by Sandra Scoppettone | Book Review Wednesday

My wife has been bugging me for months (well, maybe years…) to read Sandra Scoppettone’s Lauren Laurano series of mystery books. I resisted, not because I wasn’t interested in a lesbian private detective, but because I wasn’t ready to start a new series. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to stop once I had started, since I already had the full set on the book shelf staring at me. (And since I had already loved some of her previous books.)

A few days ago, I finally decided to take her word for...

Three Kids’ Horror Books | Book Review Wednesday

I had so much fun reading books written for children again in celebration of my daughter’s birthday that I didn’t stop with just the books I read to review for March. I had to keep going, and I started with some of the books my little reader recommended in her Mention Monday guest post late last month.

Shapeshifting with Mercedes Fox | Spotlight Saturday Author Interview

In January, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by horror author Mercedes Fox on her writing blog. I’ve interviewed lots of authors on this blog, but I’ve never interviewed one who wrote about shapeshifters until now.

Mercedes has released three books so far centering on werewolves: Vengeance of the Werewolf, Poaching the Immortal, and Life After. She’s also released an erotic short story called Mitch that has a cover that made even me blush.

Bad Dreams (Fear Street #22) by R.L. Stine | Book Review Wednesday

So far this month, I’ve read and reviewed three R. L. Stine books in honor of my daughter’s tenth birthday. Like me, my daughter loves scary stories. But I want to save her from reading books that are too scary too soon like I did. I started on books above my maturity level at a young age due to my reading ability, and I want to save her from the same fate.

That’s why, while I’ve been reading R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, I’ve also been reading some books from his Fear Street series to gaug...

My 10-Year-Old’s Top 8 Favorite Books | Mention Monday

I’ve mentioned a few times already in the past weeks that my daughter is celebrating her 10th birthday this month. In honor of that momentous occasion, I’ve posted several book reviews from my point of view. It occurred to me, however, that it would be fun for her to write something for my blog.

What follows is sort of a guest post from my little reader. I asked her to give me a list of her favorite books, and why she liked them. Without any further introduction, here are her top 8 favorite b...
