Why 2016 Won’t Suck | New Year’s Eve 2015 Review

I know, I know. Everyone writes a year in review post. Most people even write one ofthose where they talk about their goals in the next year. I’ll touch on that, but I want to concentrate more on why 2016 is going to blow 2015 out of the water. But before I can get to 2016, or even 2015, I want to briefly flash back to last year.

Cull Your TBR List | #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks Challenge

This year, I took part in the Roof Beam Reader’s TBR List Challenge, and had a great time doing it. I got through a lot of books I had been meaning to read, but I also learned a lot about myself — and about the kinds of books I just couldn’t get through. So, when I tried to sign up for the 2016 TBR List Challenge, I was disappointed to learn that this year would be the last year for RBR to host it.

Thankfully, in my search, I ran across this post from Andi at Estella’s Revenge. In it, she des...

A Wolf at the Table by Augusten Burroughs | Book Review Wednesday

Most people have heard of Augusten Burroughs by now. He’s the memoirist some call a “phony” and others call “heartbreakingly funny.” He’s written several memoirs as of this writing, but the one I read at my wife’s suggestion was A Wolf at the Table.

“If my father caught me he would cut my neck, so I just kept going.” That’s how this memoir of a brutalized childhood begins: with a boy trying desperately to escape the violence of a man whose delusions have started to take over every inch of his...

What happened to Serial Sunday?

Serial Sunday is on hiatus until January 3, 2016!

I’ve been revamping my website, re-evaluating my posting schedule, coming up with new regular features, and dissecting why the old ones didn’t garner much attention for a better 2016.

Stay tuned at the end of the monthfor a run-down of my crazy 2015 and what my plans are for the coming year.

Lines Blur | A Sweet Christmas Romance

So, I know I’m primarily a dark author. I write horror, dark sci-fi, dark comedy, etc. on a pretty regular basis. That’s why this story came so out of the blue for me, because it’s not dark.

It’s sweet.

Granted, there are themes of death within, but there is no stalking monster – real or imagined, human or otherwise – in “Lines Blur”. There’s a little drama, a little of the bittersweet, but mostly… it’s a love story.

That being said, if you’re into love stories, you should definitely grab th...

Book Review Wednesday | Rubyfruit Jungle

Rita Mae Brown is a name that I had heard over and over again in LGBT fiction circles, but I never got around to reading her work until this year. I can’t believe I waited so long. I feel like I wasted years of my life not reading this Lambda Award-winning author.

Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown is the story of one of the most interesting characters I’ve ever read.Molly Bolt isa grown-up Scout Finch, if she had ever really embraced what most of us thought she would become: a stone-cold gay...

Crumbling | A Dark Christmas Tale

In honor of the coming holiday, I’ve just released a new standalone story called “Crumbling.” It’s the tale of a young baker with a number of social quirks who must overcome the past when it comes back to bite her. Undoubtedly a dark story, it’s also a story of shedding the trappings of childhood that is remarkably without any cursing or bloody violence.

You can find it on 24symbols, iBooks, NOOK, Kobo, Inktera, Scribd, Tolino, and Amazon. (More links coming as they become available.)

Don’t Drink & Drive, You May Spill Your Drink

An important message from a fellow blogger that everyone should read this holiday season. Be careful out there, folks.

The Lonely Author

My apologizes to all.

Lonely Author usually uploads a writing related post on Tuesday to stir up discussion. But I have an important message I want to share. I will try not to preach.

During this holiday season it is easy to get caught up in the festivities. When family and friends get together it will be tempting to have an extra glass of wine (or whatever...

Weekly Flash Fiction | Protect and Serve

Freedom is something that a lot of people talk about, but not many give it the same definition. Some people say freedom is the ability to do what you want when you want to. Others think it’s more about safety. Still others define it with money.

This week’s Inspiration Monday prompt got me thinking about what is going on in the United States and the world at large right now. Immigration, money, lethal attacks, Black Lives, Blue Lives, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights… So much hatred, so many lies...

Book Review Wednesday | Lethal by Sandra Brown

When my mother died earlier this year, my bookworm daughter and I inherited her massive library of collected books. Some of them, like her Harlequin romance novels, we donated immediately so that someone else might enjoy them. The stack of kids books went straight to my daughter, who has been devouring them one after another; she’s over halfway done now, and putting me to shame with her speed. But a lot of the books stayed with me, and Lethal by Sandra Brown was the first one to pop out at me...
