BBQ and Pretty Blondes | Interview with Kenneth Deville, Author of All the Colors (Copper, Texas #2)

“Modern Day Gothic Western” is not necessarily on my favorite genres list, but I have to say, I really enjoyed both of Kenneth Deville’s Copper, Texas books. The eponymous first book, Copper, Texas, was a fun, fast-paced read. The second, All the Colors, pulled the story and the characters up by their bootstraps and made them really dance.

The series starts with a strange, but not uncommon, mystery:

“Twenty-six year-old Ernie just wants to start over. All he needs is some cash to take him a...

Word a Week | Week 32

Welcome to the 32ndinstallment of Word a Week! You can find the other Word a Week words here.

Yesterday marked an important day in my career: my first novel, Maladaptation, was released. In honor of that, I’m going to promise to match any writers who respond to the Word a Week challenge. I will write a story in the same general vein as yours, or – even more fun – you can challenge me with an off-the-wall topic for my flash fiction piece.

Any takers?

Sunday Serials | Debate the Case, Part VI

This week, I took inspiration from Master Class Monday. Writers, if you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. It’s another great source of inspiration for fiction. The weekly challenge offers three prompts; choose one, write and post your story, then link back to the original post. I look forward to what MCM might inspire me to write in the future!

Here’s the next installment in my current Sunday Serial, Debate the Case.

The Moppet Murders | I Made the Darkness Halloween Writing Contest [VIDEO]

For the past several weeks, R.L. Daman has been hosting a Halloween writing contest on his website called “I Made the Darkness.” He put out a weekly call for entries, and has been choosing one lucky story per week for feature in a video reading session on Youtube.

In Week 5, my story, “The Moppet Murders,” was chosen. (Woo!) You can watch the video below, and if you like it, give it a thumbs up. Be sure to watch the other videos, too, of which I believe there are four. The video story with th...

Weekly Flash Fiction | Inside The Orchard [Circuit Freaks, Part III]

For the past two weeks, my regular readers will probably have noticed a trend. I have two stories in progress, and I’ve been posting them piece-by-piece as I write them. Sunday Serials gets the parody who-dun-it, Debate the Case, so my weekly flash fiction posts have been consumed with this post-apocalyptic tale. My prompts this week were WOW555 and my own Word a Week.

Book Review Wednesday | All the Colors (Copper, Texas #2) by Kenneth Deville

There’s nothing like hometown writers, is there? If you’re lucky, you get to see their work grow, like an angst-filled teenager morphing into an honest-to-goodness adult, and the progression can be anything from slow and steady to raw, animal fury.

Copper, Texas by Kenneth Deville book cover

I actually had the pleasure to meet a local writer, Kenneth Deville, just after his first novel, Copper, Texas, was released. The description calls it a “modern day Gothic Western,” and I think that hits pretty close to the mark. It’s the first in...
