Morbid Traditions: Day of the Dead and Plan Your Epitaph Day

The Day of the Dead. Most everyone has heard of it, but many don’t know exactly what it’s about. I have always loved the art and pageantry that went along with Dia de los Muertos, but I haven’t ever been able to accurately celebrate it — until now.

In central and southern Mexico, the indigenous peoples believe that on the night of October 31st, the gates of the afterlife open up, and the spirits of departed children (angelitos) re...

Word a Week | Week 34

Welcome to the 34thinstallment of Word a Week! You can find the other Word a Week words here.

Halloween is over, and the Halloween Fairy Witch is on her way to visit my children and take their sweet contributions to her spooky cause. Oh? You don’t know about her? Maybe I’ll write her story one day. The TL;DR version is that they give up the rest of their Halloween candy, and the HFW leaves a non-candy prize, like a small toy or cold, hard cash.

NaNoWriMo 2015: Origins, Past, and the Project I’m Working on This Year

Your regularly scheduled Sunday Serials will be back next week. Instead, because today is such a special day, I decided to celebrate it with a little backstory. Follow me into the depths of the NaNoWriMo experience from its origins(and my experiences with it) towhat I plan on doing this year.

It’s called Cluster B, and it’s the second book in my Deviant Behaviors series. It picks up where Maladaptation left off and follows one of the main three characters (what? you...

9 Resources for Your Best Halloween in 2015 | Link Roundup

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. As you read this, I will probably be celebrating in one way or another, whether it’s through making last-minute spookysnacks, watching a spooky PGflick with the kids, or even writing a hackles-raising scene in my next book.

In honor of my favorite holiday, I thought I would give my readers a list of fun things to do to celebrate. This list has reading, viewing, learning, and – of course – treats for this darkest of holidays.

Weekly Flash Fiction | All Ghosts Day

We’re getting into the Halloween spirit in my household. Last night, we painted tiny, decorative haunted houses. Tonight, we’ll hang the rest of the decorations, and go see the Goosebumps movie in celebration of good grades in school this six weeks.

In reading about All Souls Day and Day of the Dead, I got a piece of an idea for this story. 3 Word Wednesday gave me the prompts to bring it to life. Here’s the story of a young...

Dear Mister Essay Writer Guy by Dinty W. Moore | Book Review Wednesday

This author’s name caught me right away and made me laugh. C’mon, Dinty Moore? As in Hormel’s beef stew? As it turns out, it’s Dinty W. Moore,as inthe American essayist with a flare for the dramatic and a strange sense of humor.

Dear Mister Essay Writer Guy: Advice and Confessions on Writing, Love, and Cannibals is a lot like what it sounds like, but there are some real gems hidden amongst the child-like humor and funny little pencil drawings on cocktail napkins.

Deserted street at night scary Halloween prompt

There are few memories from my childhood more full of warmth, happiness, and cheer that Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday, and I’d trade just about any other for another Halloween any day. Christmas? Pfft. Santa shouldn’t be the only one dressed up. Thanksgiving? Get lost, candied ham; I want REAL candy.

To celebrate my favorite holiday, I’m going to immediately post up my contribution to this wee...

Sunday Serials | Debate The Case, Part VII

This week, I knew I had to draw Debate the Case to a close. I’ve really enjoyed writing it, learning more and more about this high-profile case as I go, in bits and pieces. I took inspiration for this seventh installment in the story from Inspiration Monday.

Scorpio stood at the mouth of Libra’s office with a wide grin on his face. Aquarius stared back at him. She had a lot to say to him about not being at his post, about leaving her stranded without a plan, but now wasn’t the time. Not in front of Ophiuchus. And especially not...

Book Review Wednesday | The Blue Place by Nicole Griffith

Sometimes, when I’m reading a book, I find myself salivating. Did that sound weird? What I mean is that these certain books have so much to offer in lush, vibrant description —language that speaks to me somewhere deep inside my emotional core — that I almost want to devour it. The Blue Place by Nicola Griffith gave me all that and more.
