Understanding Gender Communication Differences

Some people don’t think men and women are inherently different in their communication styles. I reviewed the scientific data on this and was convinced that MOST men and MOST women have different styles of communication. Of course, there are exceptions, but if you focus on the majority of people, innate preferences, or what we “typically” see, you will find that women are more interested in building community and men are more interested in winning.  In this video, you’ll learn about data that supports that there are gender communication differences, and you’ll be surprised how early on they start.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ3cJeD32h4&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=gender_equalityVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: How To Achieve Gender Equality In The Workplace | Understanding Gender Communication Differences (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ3cJeD32h4&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=gender_equality)

How does this happen? Are these differences between the gender communication styles innate or are we trained differently? You might have assumed like me that it is both. And if there are distinct differences in communication between genders—at least for the majority of us—what do we know about it?

At work, it is important to consider whether this difference affects gender equality in the workplace. Which style is better for business? The simple answer is ‘neither’ but there is more to it than that. You must understand how and why it is important to have both. Disaster can occur when all perspectives are not ‘heard’—if you haven’t heard about my mic drop example of the invention of the airbag, watch the video.

Communication creates community. Community is essential to success on a team. Women are particularly gifted in creating teams and I have a theory as to why that is which I share, also. Learn more, then ’Like’ and share the video so that others can hear about this important issue.

2020 Superbowl Half Time Controversy

102 million viewers watched the Superbowl. They may have been cheering for the team from Kansas City or the team from San Francisco. They may not have really cared but just wanted to see the commercials. They may have watched it or it may have been background for food, drinks and fun and good company.

And they may have liked the half time show or hated it. After the event, I think there was more talk about the half time show than the game itself. Why?

You can watch this video to understand not only why the Superbowl half time show was –yet again—perceived so differently by one set of viewers than the other. How can the same thing create such diverse opinions? My view, as you will see, is that this is a ‘no brainer’. It all relates to the empowerment of women.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn-bpc7Qiss&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=business_developmentVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: The Superbowl Halftime Controversy | A Problem With Empowered Women? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn-bpc7Qiss&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=business_development)

The performers were empowered women. But, more than that, OLDER empowered women. More than that, OLDER empowered women who are MOTHERS. One is, actually, a SINGLE MOTHER. Talk about a bunch of ‘triggers’ for opinions–WOW, these are attributes that set people off. My personal view…. YAY for them.

Yours? Hmmm. Depends on how you feel about those attributes. Depends on YOU and your attitudes. And I’d like to hear what you think; how you felt about J. Lo and Shakira and that show. Love it? Hate it? Was it political? Was it not?  Please watch the video and share your comments. I’m eager to hear them.

Are There Gender Differences in Communication?

Watch my video to explore if there really are gender differences in communication. Is this a REAL thing? And, if so, what do we do about it?

There is a long-held belief that men and women ‘think differently’. I wonder if this is what causes inequality in the workplace? The different approach women and men have, has led to so many assumptions about how to overcome or manage gender differences in communication in the world of business. Is this even a necessity?

So many of us mistake ‘equality’ for ‘sameness’. What does this mean for women in the workplace which, we know, was built for men, by men? How do you own who you are, contribute based on your talents and find appreciation for that? Life, in general, can make this difficult. It is very important to manage this for your career and understanding these issues is one way to support yourself.

How do gender differences in the workplace play out? How can we make this less about differences and more about diversity and enhanced performance? How can we, as men and women in leadership positions, utilize all these potential differences to make out teams the best they can be?

This is one of my ‘hot topics.’ Because equality doesn’t mean “sameness” it means the equivalent. If done right, balanced leadership has an ROI—a huge one. Watch this video below to learn more about how communication — and thinking — works in men and women and how we make all of that WORK better for ourselves and our organizations. I think you’ll find it helpful.

The Problem of Sexist Dress Codes

There’s no doubt that dress codes are helpful in terms of creating a professional and unified workplace environment. It also takes the guess work out of dressing yourself every day. Problems arise when these dress codes start towing the line (or else crossing it completely) towards being sexist. The crown for demonstrating sexist dress codes goes to Ernst and Young. Here is an excerpt of their now famous memo.

“When women speak, they shouldn’t be shrill. Clothing must flatter, but short skirts are a no-no. After all, “sexuality scrambles the mind.” Women should look healthy and fit, with a “good haircut” and “manicured nails.” These were just a few pieces of advice that around 30 female executives at Ernst & Young received at a training held in the accounting giant’s gleaming new office in Hoboken, New Jersey, in June 2018 says HuffPost in their article that is guaranteed to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up straight.

The effects of sexist dress codes

Sexist dress codes can be extremely harmful for your wellbeing. They perpetuate the image that women have to dress themselves to appease others, and that the wrong outfit can label them a distraction.

It’s an understatement to say that sexist dress codes are often demeaning and many times inappropriate. I can never shake the Barbie feeling when I read things like this. An investigative report by Business Insider Japan revealed that some companies made female employees refrain from wearing eyeglasses, as these gave the workers a “cold impression.” Other Japanese companies encouraged female employees to wear high heels, which is not just uncomfortable if you stand or walk a lot, it’s also really bad for your feet. Earlier this year, cabin crew members from British Airways filed complaints after new guidelines went so far as to restrict the kind of bras they wore under their blouses.

Sexist dress codes are a global problem and also a generational one. In fact, sexist dress codes in American public high schools actually end up sexualizing young women. 71% of sexist dress codes in schools ban midriff exposure. The problem is, that this paints the image that this body part is overly sexual and must be covered up. I go back and forth on this issue. Chime in if you have a comment about this.

Wearing high heels and skirts, covering up your midriff, and being forced to wear makeup are all signs of sexist dress codes. Because someone else tells women what to wear. Such guidelines perpetuate the image that women’s bodies are public property, and that a woman’s value derives from her appearance rather than anything else.

Connecting sexist dress codes to body positivity

The problem with sexist dress codes is that they inevitably make all women look the same, creating the image of an ideal woman. Barbie anyone? The body positive movement thus sheds light on the ways that women can celebrate their bodies of all shapes and sizes, providing a way for women to gain empowerment and take the reins back. Model and business mogul Tyra Banks is the perfect embodiment of this cause: her famous speech on body-shaming still remains popular today, and her business empire is built around body positivity.

As a response to this scrutiny, some brands have popped up that solely champion body positivity: Woman Within’s wide range of dresses offer comfort and versatility while suiting a variety of body types. While sexist dress codes are still on their way out of the door, women everywhere are searching for and support their favorite brands to make a statement without sacrificing personal style. Universal Standard has also created a workwear line that encompasses sizes from 00-40, ensuring that no woman is left out.

My post on 10 Demands Every Woman Should Make highlights the importance of being vocal in order to elicit meaningful change at work. Questioning the purpose of sexist dress codes is a crucial step when it comes to fighting back. In the meantime, leaning on body positive clothing can give you a much-needed confidence boost to navigate the different social codes that come with being a working woman.

Let me know how you feel about this topic.

Let’s grow,

Beate

Do You Need Help Finding Balance In Life?

Finding balance in life is difficult for everyone. Particularly if you are a productive woman – some of us have been called super woman – you often spend all your time and energy rushing around making sure everyone else has their needs met. You are amazing and you make that happen for all those around you.

Bravo.

But what about you? What do you get?  Who takes care of you? When was the last time you asked that question?

There is a very good chance that you don’t do such a great job at taking care of yourself. How do I know this?

Because you are not alone. Because I was a ‘poster child’ for no work-life balance for years. I was a single mother, building a business, in deep debt and all I did was run from point A to point B, without a moment to spare. Certainly, there was no time (nor money) to spend on my peace, my wants, my wellness. And what happened?

Migraines. Horrible migraines that finally forced me to acknowledge that I also mattered. That made me understand that taking care of me was an urgent matter, too. From that, I developed a very simple tool that I use to help both me and my clients find a better balance between work and life, between supporting others and supporting myself, between overwhelmed and awesome. Watch this video to find out more about the Balance Planning Tool today.

And the best news after all these? I’m sharing it with you as a gift.

Yes, for free, for you.

All you need to do is register by clicking the button below and off you go. And then, I promise, in 10 or 15 minutes you’ll know what you need to do to find that work-life balance that has seemed so elusive. It will seem much more attainable. See you there!

How To Set Personal Goals That You Actually Achieve

Yes, it is that time of the year again. It is time for setting personal goals and for effective goal setting in the workplace!

Here we are at the beginning of a new year AND a new decade. If that doesn’t make you think it is time to ‘check in’ with how you are doing, nothing will. And, like most of us, you will inventory how both your personal and work life is going compared to what you think you want and find room for improvement.

It starts with setting goals. The data is obvious. People who set goals are more likely to achieve them. My experience—both for myself and the many people I coach, train and counsel—is that these goals should be simple. If you over complicate it, you will often end up frustrated and feeling like you’ve wasted your time or, worse, your efforts. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

I’ve developed a plan for what I call Super Simple Goal setting that takes all the guesswork out of your goal setting process. And, even better, I will share this with you AND help you through this process LIVE in my Super Simple 30-minute complimentary jam session on January 8th. Watch this very quick video to learn more and find out how to register for this free session or head on over to SuperSimpleGoals.com. Watch the video below to learn more.

Do it now so that you are ready for 2020 and have your simple, achievable goals in place as you get back to work and play. Oh, and share the link to the video with others around you so that they ALSO set super simple goals and everyone you know has a happier and more productive year. They will all thank you for the tip!

See you on the 8th.

2019 Holiday Message

Today, I want to do two things:

First, I want to thank every one of you who’s supported the channel throughout the year. It’s been a fantastic journey so far, and the positive reinforcement from you guys means a lot.

Second, I want to give a piece of advice to take home for the holidays: Don’t take your relationships with friends and family for granted. Now is a better time than ever to step away from work and spend some quality time with them.

No matter who you are, too much work isn’t good for you. You need time away from business with the people you care for. So if you don’t already have plans to step away and spend some time with friends, I highly encourage you to do so this holiday season.

MeToo Movement Backlash

Is #MeToo a risk management issue for men? YES, it is, sadly. Is it causing men to be fearful of mentoring women in the work environment? Yes.

It isn’t beneficial for men or women to feel anxiety and avoid each other. Plus, it is not good for equality in business. Businesses are stronger when there is diversity of thought because it mirrors the client base of the business, as well as its vendors, its community and the families of its own workforce.

I think it is SO important to understand what is happening because of #MeToo and the #MeToo backlash. We are all in this together and we need to confront the situation, address false information and the lack of understanding of the core issues TOGETHER.

We cannot promote segregation of men and women at work because of fear of #MeToo. But how do we deal with real worries of our male colleagues of unfair treatment or wrongful accussations?

We must provide training so that men understand what harassment looks like, and how to avoid crossing those lines while still engaging with their women managers, peers and subordinates. This is the ONLY way to move beyond both the horrible behaviors that brought #MeToo to the forefront. Watch the video to better understand my thoughts and, please, join this important conversation!

What Are Your Strong Points?

Capable, smart and competent women like you often are not advancing as quickly as they should in their careers. Instead, they watch others get ahead of them— the guy who golfs with the boss, the loudmouth on the team, the man who spends his energy taking out how he’ll take out the competition rather than doing good work.

These men are not more qualified, but often they get chosen before women do. It makes me sick to my stomach and it motivates me every day to find better ways to help women get what we deserve in terms of opportunities and success.

I created this FREE webinar that you can watch in it’s entirety on my YouTube channel called The Unapologetic Value Proposition— How to Pitch Anything to Anyone at Any Time.

What I am sharing with you is what I learned the hard way when I was building a business that I then sold to Bill Gates for millions. And, now, it is my passion and my mission to share what I learned with other women so that they can have the same success.

This webinar will teach you to talk about yourself in a way that answers that question… WHY YOU? Why should you get the job, the promotion, the project, the sale? What are your strong points? You must know. You have to not only know your unapologetic value proposition, but also be able to deliver itwith confidence, power, and energy.

If this sounds like something you want and need, check out the video and if you want to take it further please follow the link.
