5 Obstacles To Making Positive Changes
While some companies are making positive changes, it often feels that we are all still pretty ‘stuck’. Women represent a 51% majority of our society but why does it still feel like such an uphill battle to simple equality at work?
In this video, I am sharing what I have observed in the workplace and what drove me to create The Women’s Code and helping businesses to build a more balanced workplace.
There are FIVE major obstacles that continue to block the way. Watch as I take you through them one-by-one – you will find yourself nodding your head as you consider how your own work–and your whole life–is affected by these challenges that remain.

How to Get More Women on Boards?
In this video, I explore whether the increasing focus to have women serve on corporate boards is merely a fad. Will the call of having more women on boards pass or is this a trend that will grow? Here in California we are the first state where publicly traded companies are required to add one woman to their Board of Directors.
Perhaps even more important, what is the benefit for companies that make an effort to have women as leaders? There is a lot of evidence to explore and then just some ‘common sense’ facts to consider.
Here are Some Facts
Currently, for example, a full 57% of college graduates are women (!). That means it is the larger talent pool of qualified candidates. And women make 80% of the purchase decisions (!!) Based on those statistics, why wouldn’t you want to have the women’s perspective at hand when making key strategic decisions as a board?
As you can imagine, in the brewing gender war this is a hot topic and the same old trite sound bites are everywhere. “Shouldn’t it be about the most qualified candidate? What if there just aren’t any qualified women?”To no surprise these comments are made by the very men who believe that women are just not as smart. One YouTuber explained it to me that this is a fact because a man’s brain size is bigger. Therefor it means that men automatically smarter.
I bet you can imagine what I had to say about that!
More Women on Boards?
Please watch the video, ‘like’ and share, and then subscribe to stay connected to the conversation.
Because we are at such a critical time for women, I am asking you to please subscribe to my YouTube channel. YouTube likes to send the crazies to my channel and in order for me to retrain their algorithm I need more of the right subscribers and your comments. Please help me to get this message out to more women.

The Benefits Of Paid Parental Leave: Why We Should Offer Maternity And Paternity Leave In The US
Have you wondered what the benefits of paid parental leave are, and whether or not offering maternity and paternity leave in the US makes sense? Here is my bit on why companies should be required to offer paid maternity and paternity leave in the US because the benefits of paid parental leave far outweigh the differences of opinion on the issue.
An Unknown Fact
Did you know that the US is the only country among 41 other Western countries where paid parental leave isn’t mandatory? That fact alone should tell you something.
Businesses aren’t required to offer it, so many employees, businesses, and the workforce in general are missing out on the countless long-term benefits it provides.
Some consider maternity and paternity leave in the US to be unfair or unnecessary. If only women receive maternity care some think, “Why should a woman get paid to stay at home and take care of her baby?” Because it is offered mostly only to women so men already are in a disadvantaged position. And men have stigma to overcome, too “A father doesn’t need paternity leave when the mother is already taking maternity leave to care for their baby.”
The Benefits Of Paid Parental Leave
Business owners sometimes believe that paid parental leave will hurt their businesses. They should recognize that, on the contrary, the benefits of paid parental leave can help their business grow. Studies show that giving new mothers and fathers paid parental leave affects the workforce in positive ways:
It encourages employees to return to work instead of leaving permanently.
There are less turnover and costs with onboarding because it provides a friendly work environment.
Workers get to spend time with their children without worrying about lost wages or job security.
Happy workers do a better job and are more productive, creative and engaged.
It is in a company’s own best interest to have employees who are focused on their work instead of stressing about a newborn child in daycare.
Paternal leave gives employees a benefit they deserve as human beings and as a result they are more loyal to their employers and more likely to do work related things outside their regular office hours.
Please watch my video below and let me know what you think.
Do you agree that US businesses should be reaping the benefits of paid parental leave? Let’s push for maternity and paternity leave in the US, to promote a stronger workforce for the nation’s businesses.

What Makes A Good Role Model In Our Gender Equality Movement? Women Who Support Other Women
For the gender equality movement to succeed, women MUST support other women. In this video, I talk about leadership role models like Sheryl Sandberg and wonder whether we truly understand what makes a good role model.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akofajaQ-_Q&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=women_issuesVideo can’t be loaded: What Makes A Good Role Model In Our Gender Equality Movement? Women Who Support Other Women (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akofa...)
Why Do We Need Women Role Models In Our Gender Equality Movement?
First up, I suggest we bolster one another’s efforts rather than feed into the frequent backlash against women leader by decrying feminism.
Whatever your opinion of Facebook COO and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg, the fact is her efforts have made a positive difference to many women. She isn’t perfect, and her methodology or insights do not apply to every woman looking for an equal footing in business—but she’s raising the issue and fighting for the cause. That’s good enough for me.
When Successful Women Fail
Why do the messages of role models like Sheryl Sandberg often backfire and result in a fall from grace?
A leader’s message stems from her unique perspective and experience, which means it’s not relatable to everyone. If we want our gender equality movement to achieve widespread positive outcomes, we need more voices and many more women leaders. We can contribute our own individual viewpoints, support other women as we pass the baton, and work together for change.
More Women Need To Stand Up And We Must Support Them
What makes a good role model? She is a woman who takes a stand and courageously speaks out, despite the controversy that may follow.
How can you help? First set a good example in your response to women leaders. Respect and be kind to those who dare to speak out especially when you don’t agree to every single thing she says. Instead of tearing down the few women role models for their different approaches or shortcomings (we all have at least a few!), join them in their fight. Add that much needed perspective.
We can’t rest the duty of tackling the entire gender equality movement on just a handful of woman. IT TAKES ALL OF US TO WORK TOGETHER.
Most importantly, please support other women. Let’s do our part to show one another that we need and welcome the contributions of everyone. Recognize and appreciate what makes a good role model, encourage change, and keep us moving forward.

Beate

What Constitutes Wage Discrimination? Understanding the “Same Job, Different Pay” Scenario
To my critics out there: you’re going to LOVE this recent bit of news regarding wage discrimination. Surprisingly, Google OVER-paid women and UNDER-paid men! The “same job, different pay” alarm was sounded about a group of underpaid male software developers, and Google dispersed funds to counter the disparity.
When Google did their audit, they found those men were indeed underpaid. It should be noted, though, that the compensation in question wasn’t salary – male and female software developers received the same paychecks. In this case, the men got less discretionary funding than their female counterparts.
Is A “Same Job, Different Pay” Scenario Ever Okay?
On the flip side of the wage discrimination coin, Citigroup recently revealed they pay women 29% less than men. If you analyze the data without adjusting for factors such as tenure, number of direct reports, and experience, this Citigroup case points to an unfair “same job, different pay” scenario.
But you have to take those factors, and many others, into consideration when you talk about compensation. In certain studies, when differences in skill level and job responsibility are accounted for, it appears that women and men are compensated relatively equally and fairly. Watch the video below to learn more about this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1tAo4Sf57I&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=gender_equalityVideo can’t be loaded: What Constitutes Wage Discrimination? Is A “Same Job Different Pay” Scenario Ever Okay? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1tAo...)
Is there, or is there not, a wage discrimination?
This begs the question: Is there, or is there not, a gender pay gap? Does wage discrimination exist? And are the wage discrepancies we see based on gender or ethnicity, or are they the product of other variables that may be relevant and reasonable?
I think the way to achieve pay parity is to carefully consider “same job, different pay” situations and determine the exact reasons for any discrepancies to know if they are reasonable or arbitrary. Account for tenure, experience, and direct reports. And of course, eradicate actual wage discrimination wherever it exists.

Are Women Terrible in Negotiating Salaries? A Quick Look on Pay Difference Between Men and Women
Women make about 80 cents on the dollar compared to men in the same jobs. Why is there pay difference between men and women?
It’s often assumed that typical female traits are to blame for the pay difference between men and women. This is because there’s a perception that women are overly trusting, ask for less than men do, and undermine their own bargaining position. But, is it true that women are bad negotiators?
Are Women Terrible Negotiators?
A recent study debunks those assumptions. It turns out that women are just as savvy as men at negotiating salary. Here are some findings:
Negotiated outcomes by women are not significantly different than those negotiated by men.
Persistent wage differences are not due to differences in negotiated contracts.
Women are equally motivated toward self-interested behavior in economic matters.
Women are no more or less trusting than men of their superiors or subordinates.
Is The Gender Pay Gap Real?
Why, then, does this pay difference between men and women exist? It is truly puzzling. First, contrary to what some say, it does exist. The Institute for Women’s Policy Research says women in 2017 made 80.5 cents for every dollar that men earned. The American Association of University Women reports a gender pay gap across demographics, across the country, and in almost every field – even those dominated by women. To learn more about this study, watch it below.

What Do We Need To Do?
When it comes to women negotiating their salary on an equal playing field with all biases removed, women are just as effective as men. We need to look deeper and realize that the gender pay gap is an ongoing problem caused by external factors that women can’t control – YET.

Support Women’s Rights: Recognizing The Consequences Of Sexual Harassment
What lasting consequences of sexual harassment are endured by its victims? Does society understand and acknowledge women’s plight? In this video, I talk about the scrutiny women face when they speak up about sexual harassment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ9PCA8x0oQ&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=04222019Video can’t be loaded: Support Women’s Rights | Recognize The Consequences Of Sexual Harassment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ9PC...)
It’s Her Fault
People often fail to support women’s rights or rally around victims. For whatever reason, more often than not we see doubt and resentment of the victims of sexual harassment rather than the perpetrators.
We hear it all the time: “She’s claiming harassment because she’s looking for a big payout, like a settlement or book deal.” Or we hear, “How can we be sure it even happened?” But can you really believe that so many women would make formal complaints of sexual harassment for financial gain? Do you honestly think women are maliciously motivated to bring false accusations against innocent men?
What Benefit Can There Possibly Be?
The consequences of sexual harassment reporting often extend further than the trauma of the harassment itself. Women who pursue court cases are dragged through the mud. Their credibility is called into question. They’re blamed for their behavior and shamed for their sexual histories. Seeking justice after being sexually harassed can ruin a victim’s career, family, and future.
Women don’t derive undue benefits from bringing action against perpetrators. Instead, they encounter further humiliation by coming forward. In the video, I point to examples of the public’s negative attitudes towards victims. Christine Blasey Ford and Monica Lewinsky are two women who faced harsh criticism and stigmatism instead of sympathy. Too often, our society’s response is to suppress scandal rather than support women’s rights when sexual misconduct is exposed.
Please Step Up, Support Women’s Rights
Ask yourself, “How can I support women’s rights when they’ve been violated?” The answer: Direct your outrage and disdain towards sexual harassment offenders rather than victims.

Mission FAILURE: The Woman Space Suit Is A Vital Piece Of Astronaut Gear
Of all the astronaut gear necessary for a space mission, I would think that the suit is considered one of the most important items. So, why can’t NASA, with all of its highly-trained engineers and scientists, design a space suit specifically for women?
I mean, really. Have you heard about the recent all-woman spacewalk? It was a complete FAILURE. And nobody thought to give the astronauts—both of them women—suits that were meant for their bodies.
Why Was Designing a Woman Space Suit Overlooked?
I decided to investigate this topic because it was so surprising to me… How could NASA have apparently overlooked something as simple, yet crucial, as designing a woman space suit?
In the course of my research, I did find some heartening news. Apparently, NASA has reached gender parity; there are roughly the same number of men and women in the program—and that should be celebrated.
However, it does beg the question: Why isn’t there proper astronaut gear for women if there are so many of them employed at NASA?
In this instance, there are a few important details to keep in mind. The reason why the women-only space walk ultimately failed had to do with the effects of gravity on bodies in space. While in space, your spine elongates, but this can’t be simulated in training. Soon after going up, the effects of spinal elongation became apparent and one of the women could no longer fit into the suit intended for her and she had to make a difficult decision.
Our Bodies Are Not The Same
This partly explains why NASA didn’t foresee the problem. However, it doesn’t change the fact that one of our most technologically-advanced institutions is not meeting the needs of half of its people. They are lacking a critical piece of astronaut gear: the made-for-a-woman space suit.
Here are some further insights in what went on behind the scenes and my very personal message to NASA on how to solve this problem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgR-NPN1tJQ&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=04182019Video can’t be loaded: Mission FAILURE: The Woman Space Suit Is A Vital Piece Of Astronaut Gear (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgR-N...)
Let’s Grow,
Beate
NOTE: Be prepared for dissenting opinions. There is some other rationale for swapping out the astronaut that can be found here. It’s not that the suit isn’t meant for women, it’s that one woman astronaut decided the suit she had originally planned to wear was going to be too large and she opted to have a man go instead for reasons of her personal safety.

Do Courts Favor Mothers In Custody Battles? What is Family Court Female Bias?
Some men like to complain that they’re discriminated against in the courtroom. They ask, “Why do courts favor mothers in custody battles?”
Women’s Rights in Child Custody Battles Are Quite Strong
That’s because most women (82–96%) do the majority of work when it comes to raising the children. That’s where the so-called “family court female bias” comes from.
A man might think he’s a good father. After all, he plays with his children every weekend and has a good relationship with them. But if his wife is doing 20–30 hours more work per week taking care of the kids than he is, any child custody disputes are likely to be decided in her favor. There’s much more to raising children than playing with them.
Reasons Behind the Family Court Female Bias
Still wondering, “Why do courts favor mothers in custody battles?” The courts look at the facts and what’s best for the children.
Women’s careers are penalized because they are more likely to take time off to care for their kids. It’s hard to re-enter the workplace if employers consider you unreliable because you have children. Most men are happy to leave this part of childcare to their wives, and then complain about a family court female bias in the event of a custody battle.
If a man gives up his career to take care of his children and does the majority of the work, it’s quite likely that he’ll be given custody and receive child support. It isn’t so much women’s rights in child custody as it is the primary caregiver’s rights.
The gender bias in family courts comes from the fact that, most often, the primary caregiver is the woman.
If you’re still asking “Why do courts favor mothers in custody battles?” then feel free to do some research. I think you’ll find that the family court female bias is based on the realities of childcare, not any particular pro-women stance. In fact, many feminists fight for father’s rights. And those start when men step up to the plate and take equal responsibility in caring for their children.
If you like to hear more about my stand on this matter, watch this short video I recorded below.

How Did Women Owned Businesses Perform in 2018?
Women are often driven to start businesses out of economic necessity because there’s a lack of quality job opportunities for them or they cannot reconcile the demands of being a mother and work. That is why launching our own company is often not to take advantage of a market opportunity, but to make a living and have more time to take care of our families.
Why women owned businesses are still lagging behind?
The number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. has grown dramatically, and these companies create the largest number of new jobs. Yet, for all the strides women business owners have made, their revenues still don’t measure up. Women own 4 out of every 10 businesses but don’t achieve the same financial success that men do.
First, let’s look at these statistics* about women in business that illustrate the contribution versus compensation disparity:
Since 2007, the number of new businesses in the U.S. has increased by 12% overall. Of these new businesses, the number owned by women has increased by 58%.
From 2007-2018, employment by all businesses declined by 0.8%, yet employment by women-owned companies ROSE 21%.
But, nearly 90% of businesses owned by women generate less than $100,000 in revenue.
Watch this video to learn more in detail the statistics that show the inequality of profits between businesses owned by women versus men.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3qrb39nrso&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=03102019Video can’t be loaded: A Look At Recent Women In Business Statistics: How Are Women Owned Companies Doing? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3qrb...)
What’s our takeaway?
Women owned businesses almost never achieve revenues more than $250,000—the figure that triggers exponential financial growth. They miss out on the chance to develop their companies, hire significant numbers of new employees, and increase their own wealth. We have a lot of education to provide to ensure that women’s businesses are becoming more profitable. And still at this moment in time women struggle with combining our professional ambitions with their desire to raise our children.
