The Growth Of Women Owned Businesses

Here are some facts about the growth of women-owned businesses which I think you want to know. Are women really starting more businesses than men? What are the exact numbers of women entrepreneurs and what do these numbers tell us? Take a listen below…

https://youtu.be/vWgRciShxeQ?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=12022018Video can’t be loaded: Female Entrepreneurship Statistics Show The Growth Of Women Owned Businesses (https://youtu.be/vWgRciShxeQ?utm_sour...)

The female entrepreneurship statistics for 2015 and 2016 show a fantastic growth of women owned businesses. The rates of for female entrepreneurs doubled compared to males. That means twice as many women entrepreneurs than men opened their own businesses.

Let’s check the numbers

Throughout the US, women own 11.3 million businesses, or about 36% of the total. We haven’t reached equality yet, but we’re getting there. According to a study by Dell, the good news is that the US is still the top location for women to start a business. The Dell study looked at things like available startup funding, training, and legal red tape.

What’s more, female entrepreneurship statistics show that women-owned businesses tend to do very well, outperforming their male counterparts by up to 60%.

What’s slowing the growth of women owned businesses?

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says that one of the biggest problems women entrepreneurs face is that they have much less access to financing. Investors and venture capitalists tend to favor men. Fortune magazine shared that in 2017 from the entire annual investment funding of $58 billion, only $1.48 billion was invested in businesses owned by women.

That works out to only 2.5%, which does not correspond with the economic impact that female entrepreneurs make.

Do gender really matter?

Gender shouldn’t matter when it comes to choosing a company in which to invest. Investors should measure the company’s likelihood of success and make their decisions based on that.

Women still have a ways to go to achieve parity in terms of entrepreneurship and access to funding. Things are certainly better than they used to be, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

How To Improve Gender Equality In The Workplace

Whenever someone brings up the changes in the modern workplace that have taken place over the last few years, they seem to instantly become the target of anger from both men and women. Why? It’s not like the problem of how to improve gender equality in the workplace is a new one.

Understanding Changes In The Modern Workplace

In some ways it’s understandable—the system is broken. For hundreds of years, men worked in men-only workplaces that were designed for them and only them. The few women who did manage to find a place there acted enough like men that they didn’t make too many waves. Nobody thought about how to improve gender equality in the workplace because they didn’t see it as necessary.

Nowadays, millions of women are entering the workforce who are not like men at all. They may have a much less direct and assertive interpersonal style, and they may want to have children. The current system wasn’t designed to take the load of these changes and has disintegrated under the strain. Changes in the modern workplace are coming whether we like it or not.

Watch another episode in my #MusingWhileDriving series where I discuss what we can do to make workplaces less hostile, more inclusive and more equal.

How To Improve Gender Equality in the Workplace

The gap between men and women isn’t just the result of male entitlement, but accelerating social change is forcing the issue wide open. Workplaces will have to accommodate both sexes if we as a society are to meet our economic needs going forward. For women at work, this means adequate provision for child birth and child care. Men should have the option of parental leave as well.

These changes in modern workplaces have the potential to bring a better future for everyone. In an increasingly diverse and globally-conscious world, companies with limited viewpoints will go under. We all need to figure out how to improve gender equality in the workplace—not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes economic sense.

How Gender Impacts Your Career

Have you thought about how gender impacts your career? Well, you definitely will think about it if you ever become a mother. Why? Because the stereotypes about working moms can really hurt your job and promotion prospects.

How Gender Impacts Your Career: The Choice You Need To Make

Young women don’t usually have a huge problem with discrimination. Feminism has made a lot of progress in that area. Men and women start out being hired at fairly equal rates (in developed countries, at least). It’s different when you hit your late 20s and 30s. You’ll have a difficult choice to make: Do you want to have children now or will you concentrate on your career instead?

Watch this short video I recorded to learn more about how gender impacts your career especially as a working mom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld6ZOkxeZAs&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=11182018Video can’t be loaded: How Gender Impacts Your Career: The Damaging Stereotypes About Working Moms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld6ZO...)

The Damaging Stereotypes About Working Moms

The difficulties that come with bearing children over the age of 40 are well-known. What’s not often talked about is the damage you do to your career by having children just when it’s starting to take off. Watch my video “Closing The Pay Gap For Working Moms | How Can Gender Parity Be Achieved?” to learn about what happens if you decide to take time off to care for your child.

And even if you don’t take time off, the stereotypes about working moms will really hurt your career. You’ve probably heard them: “A working mother isn’t reliable. She’s not committed to her job.” As if parenting were some kind of sin! Then you’ll really see how gender impacts your career—working fathers don’t face this kind of job discrimination.

Some employers have gotten it into their heads that moms are lazy. Anyone who’s ever spent the whole day with children knows that’s not true. Kids are hard work! Balancing the demands of work and family actually makes you a more capable and resourceful person, not less so. Dealing with rational adults, no matter how difficult, is a relief after trying to get a toddler to daycare on time.

We need to get rid of these negative stereotypes about working moms for good. How gender impacts your career shouldn’t be based on doing a job that our entire society depends on—which is raising the next generation.

What Does Real Leadership Look Like?

For many people, the concept of leadership means that someone “takes charge” and “tells people what to do.” But how well does this style of leadership really work?

Exactly What Makes An Effective Leader?

Recent research suggests that women leaders have more-or-less similar leadership qualities compared to their male counterparts. They say it’s a matter of personal style more than anything. However, it’s very possible that women in the upper echelons of business got there because they were able to make it in a man’s world—to act, and lead, like men.

To women in the lower levels of management, the picture looks very different. For one thing, standards for appropriate women’s behavior are very different from men’s. Where a man is described as a “tough negotiator,” a woman is deemed “pushy and abrasive.”

Lots of women don’t want to deal with the bad-mouthing and disrespect, and many have a soft-spoken and gentle personal style anyway. But even though she may have a more gentle style, a woman still understands what makes an effective leader.

Watch another video of my #MusingWhileDriving series and share your thoughts about what real leadership is and how you would describe an effective leader in the comments below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEshrHgAN0s&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=11112018Video can’t be loaded: What Does Real Leadership Look Like And Exactly What Makes An Effective Leader? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEshr...)

So What Does Real Leadership Look Like?

Transformational leadership (at which women tend to excel) inspires high performance. Team members are encouraged to take ownership of issues instead of waiting for the boss to tell them what to do.

Of course, this style of leadership isn’t limited to women. We need to get away from assumptions that tell us men have a hard time giving support or showing empathy. We should have balanced leadership that takes the best from both leadership styles. After all, sometimes you really do need someone to take charge and tell everyone what to do.

How To Gain Respect From Men At Work

If you’re struggling to make your voice heard amongst the men in your workplace, you might wonder, “What kind of a woman does a man respect?” It might seem like they’re always talking over you, ignoring you, and treating you with the very opposite of respect. Well here’s the thing, you can change this.

What Kind Of A Woman Does A Man Respect?

Gaining a man’s respect is the first thing you need to do to establish a good working relationship. Give up on trying to be liked—you want to be respected. Most men will push back hard the first time you open your mouth. It’s their way of seeing what you’re made of. To get a guy’s respect, push back harder. Hit them over the head with a (metaphorical) two-by-four if necessary.

It’s vitally important to establish strong boundaries from the very beginning. Know your stuff, have your facts straight, and don’t back down. If you do, they’ll think they can walk all over you, and you’ll be left asking yourself, “What kind of a woman does a man respect, anyway?”

To know more on how you can gain a man’s respect at work, watch this short video in my Musing While Driving series.

We Need Solutions to End Gender Inequality

How can we find solutions to end gender inequality? It’s a common misconception that the gender gap has been closed, but a quick look at the current gender discrimination facts says otherwise.

Some Facts on Gender Discrimination

Gender inequality is alive and well. In general, white women make about 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, but it’s much worse for women of color. Black women only make 64% and Latina women only make 56% compared to men. For women 15–24 years old worldwide, rape and domestic abuse are the leading causes of death, coming in over cancer, accidents, war, and malaria.

Another fact taken into account: Did you know that any medications aren’t even tested on women, let alone pregnant women? And very few speak up about it because less than 30% of the world’s scientific researchers are women.

And in the business world, only 4.8% of the S&P 500 companies have a female CEO. In the US, countrywide rates are even lower – about 2% (notice how the most successful companies are more than twice as likely to be headed by a woman). Watch this short video to further understand my case and other facts available on gender discrimination.

We Need Solutions to End Gender Inequality

If we really want to make a difference, one of the best solutions to end gender inequality is to promote better care for infants and pregnant women. If we met women’s needs for family planning and newborn health services, 250 thousand maternal death and as many as 1.7 million newborn deaths could be averted.

It’s time for action! The world needs to step away from the same treatment and go to equal treatment. Women obviously have different needs than men, especially when it comes to pregnancy and childcare.

What’s your stand on this matter? Have you experienced gender discrimination in your workplace and/or community? How did you handle it? Do you have any solutions to end gender inequality? You know what to do! I love to hear it all!

Ending the Cycle of Executive Inequality

Let’s be clear—discrimination against women is systemic. And sometimes, it’s also unintentional.

The Hard, Data-Driven Truth

If your company offers a corporate development program, it likely benefits your male colleagues more than the women you work alongside. How so? Recent data shows many organizations unknowingly perpetuate the gender gap by continuing to give more time, energy, and resources to helping men rise. In doing so, intentionally or not, businesses deny women opportunities to gain the critical leadership skills necessary for advancement—opportunities to which many men have always had access.

The good news? The data also allows us to draw conclusions and make recommendations on how to remove barriers preventing women from equal leadership opportunities.

Ending the Cycle of Executive Inequality

Check out a new eBook by CreativeLive that offers insights and advice on how corporate learning and development programs can play a direct role in helping women rise. I’m honored they included my class, “Become An Influencer At Work” (page 15) as part of their recommendation.

Download the e-Book Here

This eBook provides concrete actions companies can take to remove barriers that are currently preventing women from rising in the ranks. It pinpoints five core areas where women need increased access to learning and skill-building opportunities, including strategic thinking.

It’s time to commit to learning and development programs that break down access barriers for women. I stand with CreativeLive in the effort to level the leadership playing field. Will you stand with me?

Get your copy of this exciting eBook today! Download the eBook here.

Will you please take advantage of this cool resource today and share it? It takes all of us to move the needle.

Spread the Word, Move the Vote

Feeling exhausted from watching politics lately? You’re not alone. It’s hard to sit back and swallow what is happening in America right now.

When 48% of Americans don’t show up to the polls, all hell breaks loose—the evidence is in the headlines. If you want the USA to get back on track and regain its position as a respected country, something must change. And you know what I’m talking about…

I’ve joined the Move The Vote movement where creative individuals are motivating fellow Americans through art to hit the polls for the midterm elections on November 6th. We need your help.

You can contribute in simple but meaningful ways by making art that boldly incorporates the color red, speaking about what moves you to vote, and posting your picture on social media with the hashtag #movethevote. Watch this short video I recorded to learn more.

Why Does Gender Equality Matter In The Modern World?

Some people—men and women—might ask, “Is gender equality still relevant?” Didn’t we accomplish all we needed twenty years ago? After all, women don’t need a male co-signer anymore when they want to open a bank account with their own money. They can go to the college of their choice. They can even enter into former “old boys clubs” to golf and network with the men.

What Is Gender Equality In The Modern World?

Young women especially might not see a need for feminism to continue fighting for gender equality. They look around and see a fairly equal world. Depending on their industry, they might see a 50/50 gender distribution, with men and women being paid about the same. “What wage gap?” they ask.

And it’s true, the view from an entry-level job can look equal. There are a lot of women in entry-level jobs. But as you ascend higher and higher up the corporate ladder you’ll see fewer and fewer women. Less than 6.4% of Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs. Doesn’t look so equal now, does it?

Is Gender Equality Still relevant?

Are you still asking, “Is gender equality still relevant?” Women’s equality and the fight for pay equality are as important now as they ever were. Sure, we’re no longer treated like property or incompetent children, but there’s a long way still to go. Why does gender equality matter? Because women want what men have always had— the right to make our own decisions.
