Does #MeToo Poison Trust Between Men and Women?

The #MeToo movement is a loaded topic. It feels like an avalanche of accusations with one high-profile name chasing another. Women are coming forward with claims of sexual harassment throughout business, politics, and entertainment. Does #MeToo poison trust between men and women?

Why #MeToo is so powerful

It’s simple. Women have endured unwanted sexual advances and harassment generation after generation. Not only are men physically stronger, but women have been taught that it’s somehow our fault if we’ve been harassed. Just look at some cultures who still put pressure on women to not draw attention to themselves so that men won’t be tempted to violate them.

And sadly, American culture allows a man to terrorize the mother of his children and attempt to drive her into poverty with his new wife or girlfriend at his side cheering him on.

That a man chooses to provide, and that he has the power to take it away, is still a prevailing idea.

#MeToo boiled over so quickly because women hold a lot of pent up anger. We have witnessed injustices at work and at home, and if it didn’t happen directly to us, it has certainly happened to someone we know. #MeToo is the release of anger that has been simmering in women’s hearts over the wrongs we’ve endured for far too long.

What did you expect?

The pendulum has swung all the way. Now women feel free to speak out.

What is your organization supposed to do?

The answer is Balanced Leadership. Men need to be part of this conversation and women must remove the hostility in order to truly communicate. Men need new guidelines and training on how they can act and react without violating their own code. Women need to support each other more and move quickly from the what-happened conversation to the what-we-can-do-to-change-this conversation.

I want to support you and your organization in this. To have an exploratory conversation, please click here. Let’s talk.

What Causes Sexual Harassment?

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the #MeToo movement, we are witnessing huge media publicity and scrutiny regarding all forms of sexual harassment.

But instead of talking about what happened to whom, I’d like to discuss the root causes. Can we dig deeper into personality traits that explain why sexual harassment happens?

In this video I break down the three types of men who are most likely to harass women, intentionally or unintentionally. These are:

#1: Men who believe they are superior

#2: Men who misunderstand and misread signals from women

#3: Neanderthals who don’t know (or don’t care) if their behavior is offensive

Please watch the video below:

https://youtu.be/2HP5ebP15iUVideo can’t be loaded: Causes Of Sexual Harassment (https://youtu.be/2HP5ebP15iU)

Change can only happen on a large scale when we challenge the norms that are deeply ingrained in a culture, and then educate society as to why these norms are problematic.

Let’s Kick Some Glass

Each January I select a word that will rule all my decision making for the year. After much contemplation, my word for 2018 is: IMPACT. It’s time to make a bigger impact by reaching more women and the businesses that support them. As my friend Pattie Grimm says: Let’s Kick Some Glass.

To make an impact, we need to collaborate with others. And that’s exactly what Pattie and I did.

Here are some of the topics we covered in the spirited interview:

Why do Millennial women believe inequality isn’t their problem?
What can men do in the wake of #MeToo?
Are men required to break the men’s code if they want to support women?

You can watch the YouTube video here:

Or listen to the Podcast here.

We are seeing a massive push toward equality and women are speaking up about what many of us have endured for decades.

As it was so eloquently put by Tarana Burke, founder of the ‘Me Too’ movement, “It’s not a moment. This is a movement.”

It’s Probably Nothing…

Every woman does her best to take care of herself and her health. Yet, sometimes our regular check-ups are not so regular. I consider myself quite healthy, but lately things had been a bit off. So I saw my doctor. And he saw something that is probably nothing…

A routine check-up

Going to the OB-GYN isn’t exactly the stuff dreams are made of. There’s poking and prodding in very intimate places. Add the ultrasound wand and not much is left to the imagination. I can see the ultrasound image on the screen and try to relax.

A dark spot

This spot looks like it doesn’t belong. And I can tell my doctor feels the same. He keeps going back and forth in the same area. He takes a picture, measures the spot’s size, and tells me he wants to do a biopsy. Just to make sure, but it’s probably nothing.

This hurts

He inserts a 15-inch stick and cuts off a piece. Ouch! Then he tells me I will know by Friday if it’s normal or abnormal. But, not to worry because it’s probably nothing.

Waiting is torture

I now understand all women who wait for a diagnosis. Days drag by. Friday comes and goes without any news. And, of course, this is weekend my man had planned with his pals ages ago and I am left alone to deal with the terror of my own thoughts.

Give more to yourself

I did my best to keep the bad thoughts at bay and wondered instead how I could turn this into something good. Then it dawned on me. I have to give to myself more. And stop punishing myself when things go wrong.

So, I treated myself all weekend long. I went to the museum, listened to a lecture, cooked myself good food, drank some nice wine, went to the gym and steam room, and enjoyed the outdoors with a hike. I rushed nothing and treated myself like a very important person. Only positive thoughts and emotions allowed.

A big wake-up call

Today I got the call from the doctor. It’s nothing. Well, actually that’s not quite right. It is a something. But not the something I feared. It is a wake-up call big enough to freak us all out.

So here’s the takeaway I learned and want to invite you to share it with me:

Give more to yourself. Not when you’ve done all your chores, but RIGHT NOW. For no other reason than because you are so fabulous.

Ready to start? Hit reply and tell me what you are giving to yourself right now. I just made myself a cup of my favorite tea and wrote a non-business post sharing how I feel. I enjoyed that.

You are brilliant—always remember it. Now go do something nice for your brilliant self.

Why Employee Engagement is Important

Only 30% of employees are engaged with the work they’re doing, and many contribute only the bare minimum required to keep their jobs. That’s a terrible ROI. What can we do to change a work environment so that employees actually want to be there and are inspired to put forth their best efforts?

Why Employee Engagement is Important

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT IS THE KEY and it is built on a foundation of equality and diversity within leadership ranks. That’s because employees are more likely to identify with and interact with those they can relate to, and that leads to them to caring more about their contributions or to put it bluntly “giving a shit.”

We need to talk about why employee engagement is important to companies, regardless of their size. Here is a short video I recorded where I discussed the importance of employee engagement. Listen to it below.

Are Some Women To Blame?

During a recent radio interview about women leadership with corporate trainer Pattie Grimm, the #MeToo movement came up. And so did the question that many men are thinking but don’t dare to ask: Are all women innocent victims, or are some women to blame?

It’s a loaded topic

First, every case is different. From someone honking at a woman while she is walking down the street, to being the victim of assault and rape—there is a broad range of what constitutes an unwanted advance and what causes physical or emotional harm. But understand this: No woman is ever asking to be hurt or violated. Ever.

Yet, the question posed by some men and conservative women alike is valid and worthy of discussion. Are all women entirely innocent and free of blame when they become victims?

Take responsibility for your own actions

As young girls, we learn that women care about their looks. Yes, we do this to make ourselves feel good, but we also often like to be noticed or to attract men. As we grow older and more aware of our bodies and sexuality, teenagers yearn to be more like women and less like young girls. The privilege of being young is enjoying the limited time for wearing ultra-short skirts with super-high heels, and having the energy to go out dancing all night long. You are only young once. Why not enjoy it?

Invitation to approach and pursue

Young women look amazing when well-dressed with their make-up done perfectly. They are fresh, full of fun, and they are exciting to watch. As the mother of a 25-year-old I attest to the vivaciousness and energy a young woman carries. Unfortunately, this signal is often misinterpreted. Some men believe it is a personal invitation to approach and pursue.

Women must be cautious, careful, and deliberate

Male leadership style is often about power. Power is an aphrodisiac and attracts women, no question. And because she finds it exciting to be noticed, a woman’s behavior regulator can be thrown out of whack. Every woman I know has fallen for a bad boy or two. Unfortunately, sometimes we learn the hard way just how bad they really are.

Young women can be naïve. I mean, how do you know what you haven’t yet learned? And who would assume that this nice, charming man you just met could be an opportunistic pig? Most women truly believe the initial attraction they feel is unique and something very special. Even if our internal alarm bells ring loudly, it’s easy in the moment to justify innocently flirting with a married man, or accepting an invitation to have a private nightcap with someone we’ve only known an hour. We think, the chance for true love means taking some risks, right? We’ve known these Prince Charming fantasies since watching Disney movies as children…

For a man, this signal is perceived as a clear-cut acceptance of something purely sexual. She wants me, she’s into me. After all, she is here with me and what else does she think will happen? Once you are in a room alone with a man who is high on power, booze, or drugs, it’s hard to get out unscathed. We all know it’s better to avoid the situation in the first place, but it happens before we even realize the danger. He seemed so nice…

Was she deliberate or naive?

It’s easy to be lured with compliments, free drinks, and attention from a man who is accustomed to being in charge. It takes experience and character to stand your ground, especially when saying no to someone powerful with influence over your career.

That’s why in The Women’s Code we don’t judge a woman’s behavior. Rather, we encourage women to protect themselves better so they can make informed decisions ahead of time. And say no more often.

A good man is willing to wait for the woman who interests him. A bad boy wants the goods now because he is high on the chase. Please, teach your daughters the difference.

Discover Your Superskill

After the craziness of 2017 it’s time to shift gears into making positive impacts with the one thing we have full control over—ourselves. For my part, I’d like to support you in showcasing yourself and your superskill in the very best light. But, do you know what your superskill even is?

What is a superskill?

A superskill is something you are naturally really good at. Some people can break down complex processes like it’s the easiest thing in the world. Others can quickly identify the big picture of a project and know who is needed on the team to achieve the objectives. Or, perhaps you are a natural leader with a knack for getting the very best work out of people.

Does your superskill get the credit it deserves?

Interestingly, our own superskill is often more obvious to those around us than it is to ourselves. People may say things like, “I don’t know how you do it” or, “I could have never done this as fast as you” or, “You handled that incredibly!” These statements are telltale signs that a superskill lays beneath. You don’t even think about HOW you do that thing, and yet it stands out to your team members, family, and friends.

How can you discover your superskill?

I’m glad you asked! You can join me for a superskill workshop in Seattle on January 12th, or stream the live broadcast online for free.

In this workshop I will show you step-by-step how to identify your superskill.

You’ll learn how to:

Identify and understand your personality type using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
Figure out what you’re naturally good at and how you can use that to advance your career.
Build your confidence by focusing on the positive aspects of who you are.
Perform a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) to identify your superskill and blind spots.
Create a convincing Professional Value Proposition.
Communicate your strengths and skills to your team, colleagues, superiors, and clients.

Join me in one of two ways:

Register for the free live stream taking place on January 12th. Please go to this page to register.
Be part of the studio audience in Seattle. Please fill out this short application to attend the live event for free. I’ll be interacting with the audience to demonstrate exactly how superskills are uncovered. YOU may be one of the lucky participants whose superskill is identified live on air!

Spots are limited, so please register immediately. See you next week!

A New Year’s Message For You

2017 is over. Thank goodness! I don’t know about you, but it’s been a very challenging year for me. I’m referring to it as a “transformational” year just to put a positive spin on things. Now it’s time to LET IT GO and focus on what’s ahead because I don’t want to schlepp any negativity and disappointment into the New Year.

Letting go is easier said than done, so here are four strategies that can help you clear your plate.

IT’S NOT FAIR

Yes, you are right. It’s not fair. From the guy who straight out lies, to that person who makes stuff up, to the credit someone took for your work, to you being unfairly singled out…it’s not fair. How do you let it go? Ask: are these people worth your energy? Because letting it go means they get nothing. Continuing to be angry only feeds the beast. And besides, the best revenge is to be very, very successful.

YOU DIDN’T DO ANYTHING

When my father died, I sat together and shared stories with my brother and sister. It’s astonishing how three people can have significantly differently viewpoints and perceptions of the exact same scene. Ask: is your viewpoint really the only valid one, or could there be another side to the story? This will require your very best active listening.

YOU ARE RIGHT

I just returned from a holiday trip to Germany to visit my mother. While some of the stories she recounted of our younger days sounded lovely, many of them are peppered with generous doses of fiction. My siblings and I want to remind her of what really happened. It’s tough, because our stories match whereas hers is completely different. Ask: while you may be correct, will it help or hurt this situation to make your correctness known? In my case I finally accepted that people who experienced extreme trauma, like my mother did during World War II, often create a bubble of more pleasant events that enable them to function. Pulling that safety blanket from them only creates conflict and pain.

YOU LOST

That’s a hard one. Even though you fought like a lion and worked your butt off, you didn’t get the promotion, the business failed, your idea tanked, or you experienced a big financial loss. Ask: why can’t you believe that things happen for a reason? It may actually be a blessing in disguise. Don’t things always work out? Just because you didn’t get it this time doesn’t mean it’s never going to happen. This perceived loss may just be the first stone in a new foundation for something bigger and better.

If you have any strategies you want to share, please comment below. I believe letting go is one of the most difficult things to do, and yet is one of the healthiest ways to find your inner peace.

From the bottom of my heart, and from the entire team at The Women’s Code, we wish you a Happy New Year!

My Christmas Wish for You… Stay Ridiculously Positive

During the holiday season, isn’t it true that while we look forward to spending time with family and friends (and some well-deserved downtime), many of us get overwhelmed? From shopping, to fretting over the right gift for the discerning connoisseur, to the spirited discussion of our family ghosts from the past—the holidays are stressful. How can you stay ridiculously positive during all of this?

False messaging sets wrong expectations

Emotion sells, which is why holiday music and movie storylines are so emotional. She gives him the car he always wanted while the young son looks adoringly at his father. (Sure, that’s a reality for most of us.) He gives her the diamond necklace and we shed a happy tear for them because he just appreciates her so much.

Our realities are different

The holidays are messy because we are messy. We eat too much, say the wrong things, unintentionally trigger someone else’s issue, and are often glad when it’s all over.

My Christmas wish for you

Instead of stressing for perfection, focus on how to remain ridiculously positive throughout the season. If you find this difficult, try faking it!

When the egg drops on the floor and the flour goes flying through the kitchen… laugh it off! When your favorite tea cup is knocked over and shatters… be grateful you were enjoying yourself at the time and that it didn’t break unceremoniously in the dishwasher. When Uncle Alfred says that sexist thing about women not being able to play soccer due to a shortness of the foot span (I swear that’s what he said)… it’s just so outrageous that you can’t help but giggle and promptly enroll your daughters into next year’s soccer program.

Whatever may come up for you—family messes, people who refuse to change, those who have changed too much (and for me, plenty of Daddy and Mommy issues)—remember to keep your focus not on them, but on you.

What can you do today to stay ridiculously positive?

Lock yourself in the bathroom for that 20-minute bath if needed (wear your headphones so you don’t hear them banging on the door), or grab your shoes and go for a walk or run, or head out for a cup of tea at the coffee shop. You can always take 20 minutes to get yourself back to center.

Take others for who they are and know in your heart that everybody does the best they can with what they’ve got.

Finally, I’d like to share my personal tip that helps me cope with the messiness of the season. Remember: of ten people who attend the same event, none will recall the exact same experience.

I keep reminding myself that my version of life experiences is mine alone.

Instead of disputing it and fighting for my viewpoint, I make the effort to just accept other people’s versions as their truths. When it gets touchy, this mindset helps me to keep emotional distance so I don’t get sucked into my ghosts of the past too often. It’s part of active listening.

Wishing you a great holiday season! Let me know how you stayed ridiculously positive. I’d love to know your strategies!

Let’s Grow!
