Is This Unconscious or Conscious Bias?
Susan Chira’s article certainly hit a nerve. The Universal Phenomenon of Men Interrupting Women concludes that “academic studies and countless anecdotes make it clear that being interrupted, talked over, shut down or penalized for speaking out is nearly a universal experience for women when they are outnumbered by men.” This must-read article will cause your jaw to hang open as you read story after story of women being interrupted and spoken over by men.
Why are women not taken seriously and why is our input downplayed, ridiculed, or simply ignored?
I wonder, is this bias unconscious or conscious? Is talking over women something that exists today only because it always has? Perhaps this behavior is so deeply ingrained that we don’t even know it is happening. Is this embedded DNA? The men’s code that causes men to stick together and willingly target women as the object of their displeasure? Or, is it a reflex of feeling threatened that makes men deliberately attempt to diminish women’s contribution until women are regarded as small and insignificant? Is this for self-bravado or due to a fear of breaking the brotherhood bond? I’m at a loss. If you have insights, please share them.
Women who speak up and ask questions are NOT admired as daring, bold, and fierce. When we raise our voices to be heard, we are called difficult to deal with, opinionated, disruptive, the b* word—or worse. Jokes are made about our emotional or hormonal state. Our right to our opinion is challenged and we are often considered incompetent or not knowledgeable. All because we have something important to say. This is a big reason why women need other women!
Don’t believe me? Here are some recent public examples:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell objected to Elizabeth Warren’s choice of quoting a letter that was written by Coretta Scott King. Warren was told, “the Senator is to take her seat” when the content of that letter was perceived as violating Rule 19, which basically states that no senator should use words to impute another senator.
During a recent Uber board meeting, Arianne Huffington remarked that more women need to be brought onto the Uber board. Board member David Bonderman said in response, “actually, what it shows is that it’s much more likely to be more talking.” That alone would be bad enough publicity for Uber. But it leaves you speechless when you remember the board members were meeting to address the hostile sexist culture of Uber. Seriously. Bonderman resigned under much public pressure—and that’s how a bad joke can cost you a board position.
Here in California, we elected former prosecutor and outspoken woman, Kamala Harris, to ask hard questions and get answers. Jason Miller, a former adviser to President Trump’s campaign described Senator Harris as “hysterical” and said she was shouting during her questioning of Mr. Sessions.
The problem is pervasive
I wrote about this phenomenon in my book Happy Woman Happy World. I believe this behavior in modern-day men is a leftover from the caveman days where everything revolved around survival. Men sought out other men with the highest skill levels. They tolerated the biggest jerk, even supported him, if it meant survival. Does this remind you of something? Men still do this TODAY!
Women, however, evolved. And history shows that every time women try to make leaps forward, the same men who still believe the same old stuff put us in our place. Literally and virtually.
So, what are we going to do about it? How do we react to being told to be quiet and sit down?
The good news is there are great men out there who have shed their caveman ways and evolved into respectful men of the 21st century. They figured out that the tides have shifted, and they know supporting women is the right thing to do. These men encourage women to speak up and stand up in their organizations so together we can discover new and better ways of doing things.
Turn on your TV and tell me if you think that it’s working out well for the desperate white males who are holding onto their power behavior. Data shows conclusively that we are better together. That means nothing but 50-50% is acceptable.
In the words of an executive at a public company, “When I hire white men I know what the outcome will be. The same as it’s always been.”
I am ready for change. Are you?

The Megyn Kelly Affair, and Why I Am Not Having Any Of It
Why is it that every time a woman steps into a position of power or takes on a daring task, we must find as many things wrong with her as possible? What is the reason for this? Let’s take a look at the unfolding Megyn Kelly affair and why I am not having any of it. (She’s a blonde bimbo that I wrote about earlier.)
The subject of women not supporting other women, and media outlets ripping women to pieces, makes me mad as hell. This dilemma is one that I have witnessed for many years and it is the reason I created The Women’s Code.
Here is the story. Megyn Kelly first stepped into the spotlight in 2016 when Donald Trump made sexist and inappropriate remarks about her after she co-moderated a presidential candidate interview. The comments were cruel and vile and no man would dare call another man something comparable.
Megyn Kelly left Fox News to run her own talk show on NBC. Her first interview was with Vladimir Putin. Let’s be clear, no journalist could find a bigger score. It simply does not get any bigger than that.
And what do we do?
We engage in a conversation about how disappointed we are that she didn’t push Putin hard enough. We said she wasn’t aggressive enough on the tough questions.
This is baffling to me. I have worked in journalism, so I know a few things about interviews. The job of an interviewer is built on relationships. Meaning, you approach every interview as a partner to your guest, not as an enemy. The quality of the interview depends on your ability to make the person comfortable. Often, you and your guest agree beforehand which topics will be discussed and what is off limits. It is common practice for celebrities to exclude certain topics or only answer pre-approved questions. If you violate their wishes, they are likely to walk out and you are left with a destroyed reputation and few people left to talk to. One mistake can cost you an entire career.
You must consider the intelligence and the objective of your interviewee. In this case, Vladimir Putin is a former super spy, the current President of the Russian Federation, his enemies seem to mysteriously disappear or die, and he has strategically outsmarted entire countries by meddling with their affairs behind the scenes.
Megyn Kelly somehow managed to get this person to sit down and agree to an interview. And we are upset that she’s not asking hard enough questions? That thought process is so ridiculous that I don’t have anything else to say about it.
This past weekend I was at the Supermarket and glanced at the headlines in the checkout lane. People magazine picked up a story from the National Enquirer, the world’s most dishonest and trashiest publication. Yet People runs with the story about Kelly’s decade-long plastic surgery addiction to the tune of $1.4 million.
I would be laughing if this wasn’t so sad. The systematic destruction (based on nonsense) of women who are the trailblazers of our times must be stopped. We are better than this.
We have to eradicate and deny our permission to take another woman down, even if she is controversial. Especially one who is making the way for many more women journalists to fight through a male-dominated and sexist industry called The Media. And I know, because I’ve been in that business. Our stories are not pretty.
To change the way women are perceived, we have to become that change. This is what Gandhi famously said and it has resonated with me since I first heard it.
Let’s not participate in discussions that take other women down. Let’s not buy the trash magazines. Let’s not engage in conversations of 140 characters that demean women.
I am not having any of it, and I hope you won’t either. To step into leadership as women we need to have each others’ backs and stand on each others shoulders. Let’s discuss the facts, and let’s not give permission to divert away from the real issues we face. Equality—not cat fights.
And to Megyn Kelly, while I don’t agree with all of your views, I respect and admire you. I will continue to cheer you on and I certainly will have your back. Because what you are doing is pretty fabulous.
Onward!

A Company’s Nightmare—$41 Million Settlement Because She Leads Like a Man
Alexis Berger, the aggressive and competitive 32-year-old marketing executive at Kargo Global earned over $1 million per year, plus bonuses. She helped grow the company from annual revenue of $5 million to $135 million.
And then she got fired.
Most companies spend days, weeks, sometimes months with their C-Level executives to establish the mission, vision, and core value of a business. But without proper balanced leadership training, how can an organizations culture change to reflect of all this effort?
In this example there is a woman leader who making big contributions to the bottom line and she still gets singled out.
It all began with vague complaints about Alexis Berger’s behavior even though Kargo Global’s culture was shaped by aggressive men. For example one male employee has a documented history of sexual discrimination, and another known “hothead” toxified the office climate to unbearable levels.
That is what the arbitrator, Mr. Colombaro’s 32 findings state. Berger was punished for the same behavior that men got away with. Poignantly, the arbitrator stated, “it is clear from Kargo’s actions and collective attitude that a woman is not permitted to act like a man.”
This double standard cost the company 41 MILLION DOLLARS that were awarded in arbitration to Alexis Berger.
This costly fiasco could have been prevented
Imagine if the company had invested $75-250 thousand dollars to assess their leadership imbalance, derive a customized plan, and provided balanced Executive Leadership training along with a company-wide roll out instead. And let’s not even talk about the insurance premiums that Kargo Global will have to dish out for the coming years.
I founded The Women’s Code to address the multiple facets needed to create a FAIR and balanced workspace.
But first, we must establish the baseline. Without a clearly identified baseline and established leadership attributes that range from female to male centric, without that, there cannot be a fair work environment and there will never be balance.
We have many examples of what doesn’t work. For example hiring a couple more women and hoping for the best. That’s like the re-education of the wolf. Behavior is ingrained in the culture and merely raising the issue won’t fix it. We have to demonstrate how everybody wins. If I were to discuss with a predominately white, middle-aged, male workforce how they need to be less biased and more supportive toward women, they will all nod in agreement. But unless we demonstrate that there is a benefit for them there won’t be lasting change. Because there is no buy in, just another thing that men have done wrong that needs to be fixed (and men hate feeling that way.)
That is why without buy in, training is useless. In fact, it can create more hostility.
There is a simple way to do this. I call it The Women’s Code Sliding Scale Of Leadership Attributes. It demonstrates how supporting women is a good thing for even the men, and what’s in it for them. With a Sliding Scale Of Leadership Attributes you have female- and male-centric leadership attributes that are aligned with the core values and the mission and vision of your organization. Your employees choose a few attributes that they want to develop.
Men can finally broaden their own leadership skills and women can identify and find the recognition for our own leadership style that we so badly crave.
Let’s discuss how this this small idea can be the leadership game-changer in your organization and profoundly influence your culture—naturally and with buy in from everyone. Everyone wins, the men and the women.

The Illusion of Limitation
Sometimes we hit a bump in the road. And after our initial reaction our internal voice suggest ever so slightly: “It’s you – not them.”
Lately I’ve been dealing with… well… life. My daughter is moving which causes me sleepless nights and a lot of worry. I thought that when they are adults that my job is done but that is whole other story.
What I want to share with you is one of the tools we can use to get back to center. Here is where the words of Guy Finley come in who reminds me ofThe Illusion of Limitation… and suggests The Liberation of Self
Because I like his work and find him refreshingly simple and trustworthy I want to share two resources over the next two days that can support you to break free and be the person you were meant to be.

True leaders don’t divide; true leaders unite
The man knows no boundaries. History is all but meaningless. When will we learn? This and a thousand other thoughts race through my head as I turn on the news lately. So many different messages, many of them using fear to feed extreme viewpoints. What we don’t know—don’t understand—must be eradicated. What is different from [...]

I would like your input on happiness because it is something that affects each one of us. Between twiddling thumbs, playing hours of video games, and binge watching TV... What matters now? This is the question Dr. Marilyn Joyce asked me and it brought our conversation to a screeching halt. But let me back up first... Leadership in Crisis

Much like the rest of the world, I wonder where things went wrong for those men. One news segment suggested the terrorists [...]
