The One Thing You Need to Know About Setting Goals

Well, we made it.

We survived 2020, and I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty proud of us. There were days (weeks/months) when I wasn’t so sure, but we did it. Way to go us!

This time of year is all about setting resolutions. Maybe you’ve already resolved to fix some of those bad habits leftover from 9 months of quarantine… I know I have!

Today, I have a resolution to propose. I want you to…

Set bigger goals!

Most people don’t know how to effectively set goals. Here’s what I’ve learned about how to set bigger goals and actively work towards them:

You must create a mental image of what you desire and then attach an emotion to it.

When an emotion is attached to a desire, your mind bypasses your intellectual capabilities, and it goes directly into your subconscious – making it far more powerful!

https://youtu.be/J6wePapG5OsVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Goal Setting Tips For The New Year (https://youtu.be/J6wePapG5Os)

So, think about a goal that has an emotional meaning for you.

Better yet, think of something that will stretch your capabilities. Don’t worry about being realistic, because here’s the thing:

If you have a desire and someone else has already done it, then it exists. If it exists it must be possible. Don’t waste time thinking about why you can’t do something. Focus on how to make it happen and run full steam in that direction.

If you need help setting your 2021 goals, sign up for my Super Simple Goal Setting – it’s live NOW on my Inevitable Recovery Facebook group. I hope to see you there!

So, where do you want to be in six months or a year (and I don’t mean vaccinated and traveling somewhere exotic, because…obviously)? What quantum leaps do you want to achieve?? Share your ideas below!

Let’s grow,
Beate

Mindset: Changing Negative to Positive Thoughts

Have you ever noticed how good things keep happening to some people while others seem to always attract negativity? The secret may lie in their mindsets…

You see, whatever goes on in your mind is what you’ll attract in your life. So if you’re one of those people who nothing good ever happens to, you might be stuck in a negative mindset loop…and probably have been for years.

Maybe it started when you were a kid because you were laughed at when you said you wanted to be a professional race car driver or an actor. Or maybe later someone told you to be realistic when you said you wanted to travel the world and be a multimillionaire. Or maybe someone told you your business idea was stupid. And then one day you woke up making just enough money to pay your bills, wondering what happened to those big ideas…

Little by little, the people around you planted seeds of doubt which limited your thinking and actually made you believe that you are incapable of doing whatever you set your mind to. Now you don’t even need someone else to laugh at your ideas because you’re carrying around a negative little voice in the back of your head that does it for them.

You’re stuck in a negative spiral and this is why it seems like nothing good is ever happening in your life.

Well, my friend, it’s time to reprogram your mindset and break out of the muck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InqwTaWb6O4Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: How To Change Your Mindset (The POWERFUL Truth About Positive Thinking) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InqwTaWb6O4)

Cultivate Awareness

To learn how to change your mindset, start by cultivating your awareness. Become very familiar with what’s going on in your head. If there’s a voice perpetually shooting you down or fearing for the worst, then muzzle it!

Ask yourself: Is this thought useful? Is this thought true? No? Then it has no place in your head. Take a breath and reassess.

Make Incremental Changes to Your Thoughts

The trick to changing your mindset is incremental change. Reintroduce positive thoughts incrementally until the big ideas don’t seem quite so impossible. In other words, what would it take to get from where you are right now to where you want to go? Map it out on a piece of paper.

For example, if you’re broke today, moving into a mansion tomorrow is unlikely – but giving up is also getting you nowhere. In this case, the first incremental thoughts might be “I can’t wait to move out of my apartment,” followed by, “I can’t wait to move into a house.” The more specific, the better! “I cannot wait to move into my house that has three bedrooms and a swimming pool.” Hold onto these achievable goals and the universe will help you find a way to make them happen.

As you internalize these thoughts, you will shut out the doubt and in fact attract more positivity and opportunities. Apply this same tactic to your business, your career, your relationships, and see how you suddenly become one of those people that everything goes right for.

What big dreams did you have as a kid? Share them with me or a friend, give some love and see for yourself how positivity and focusing on a dream can be contagious and even achieve results!

Let’s grow,

Beate

What Helps Scale Women-Owned Businesses?

Are you one call away from success?

16 years ago, I met with the largest image-provider in the world, armed with 450 images/stock photos, and a great idea – and they almost laughed me out of the room!

These executives were accustomed to companies coming in with expansive libraries filled with millions of images. But it didn’t matter to me how small my company and library were. I was determined, and I convinced them that I had 450 valuable images. If they gave me a chance, I could nimbly adapt to new data that we would glean from future purchases, driving performance, and make them even more money.

And that’s how I sold my business to Bill Gates and completely changed my life.

But, before Microsoft purchased my company, I was a deeply in debt, single mother and I was terrified. I wanted to give up. But I stuck with it because I knew I had a good idea…and it paid off!

Maybe this sounds familiar to you. Maybe the obstacles seem insurmountable sometimes making you want to give up. Just remember:

You might be one phone call away from epic success. Don’t give up now.

Women Business Owners Facing Adversity

Even in what we now can call ‘normal times’, before the pandemic turned our world upside down and inside out, women often ran up against gender barriers when trying to be successful entrepreneurs. There is a full range of these and all of us have experienced some of them. Many of us have faced all of them AND had to deal with all the usual stressors of trying to grow the scope of our own business. It can be very intimidating—daunting even—just to start a business. It can be incredibly demanding to grow it. It can feel nearly impossible to do that as a woman business owner. But it is NOT impossible—it just feels that way.

In this video from a television appearance, I talk through some of these issues with the show host, Jim Fitzpatrick. We list some of those issues—the preconceived notions that you AND others have that make these gender barriers so common and even, sometimes, hard to recognize. We talk about their basis and how these inaccurate but common perceptions get in the way of women feeling confident, supported, and ‘awesome’ as they navigate business ownership and growth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfh-9dvaARcVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: How Women Can Overcome Difficulties In Business | Don’t Let Gender Barriers Hold You Back (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfh-9dvaARc)

We also celebrate how strong and successful these same women can be once they overcome those difficulties and release those limiting thoughts. It is truly inspiring to focus on this—particularly now—and I hope you enjoy watching this and learning from it. If you find it lifts your spirits, makes you want to get to that place in your own life, and could be beneficial to other women (and men) that you know, then please ‘Like’ the video and share it amongst your colleagues and friends.  We can all use the lift!

Setting Goals: Think Bigger

The Truth About Setting Goals: Think Bigger!

Are you setting big goals or are you settling for what’s “realistic”? Here’s why you should be thinking bigger!

From a psychological perspective, most of us are programmed to expect a certain level of comfort. We are encouraged by our parents, peers, colleagues, and maybe even customers to be realistic. Many of you may have even voiced big ideas, only to be shot down by naysayers. So, we stay within our safe zones. We set realistic goals that seem within reach. And we celebrate a job well done when we achieve these attainable goals. But here is the problem with this “realistic” mindset: Limiting yourself to what seems real and what you are comfortable with is a trap. You will never scale your business or be as successful a leader as you can be if you stay comfortable. It’s time to stop settling and start thinking bigger.

Let’s say you want to become a millionaire, or turn your store into a franchise, or have 100K followers, or surpass 1 million Shopify sales. Does that seem impossible to you? Ask yourself this: If others can do it, why not you? Push yourself out of your comfort zone and stop listening to the people who would hold you back – including yourself!

With my Goal Setting Tool, you can start setting life-changing, STRETCH GOALS in just 10 minutes. This tool will help you think bigger and put you on a path to making the impossible a reality.

How A Good Media Strategy Will Make You an Expert

So you’ve honed in on your market space and positioning and now you’re ready for more – for bigger and better. But how? How do you broaden out to new potential clients and share your expertise with the world?

You need to be become an authority figure – a known expert in your niche or category. It’s called an Authority Platform and it’s going to get you the publicity and media exposure you need to scale your business.

Don’t believe the self-doubt that says you’re not an expert yet and therefore not an authority – and don’t wait until your retired to write your manifesto. It has to be a part of your media strategy now. Start building your authority on the way up.

So, here’s my advice: Find your unique message and then amplify it as widely and loudly as possible. Write the book now. Get active on LinkedIn and Social Media. Start posting videos on YouTube and TikTok. Stop neglecting your media strategy. If you aren’t telling your story now, you are losing out on potential growth.

Ignore the voices that say to put yourself out there is greedy or vain. It’s not about money or attention. It’s about impact. How many people can you serve? How many lives can you make better? Because as entrepreneurs we’re here to solve problems. This is what helps you get the win.

Learn more by watching this video where I discuss authority building with Jim Fitzpatrick, during his show, The Atlanta Small Business Show.

How To Find An Executive Coach

3 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Leadership Coach | Executive Coaching

Frankly, most of us are not born leaders. It is a skill/collection of skills that takes time, energy, and patience to master – but you can jumpstart that process by hiring an Executive Coach. I have been an Executive Coach for years and have helped thousands become more equipped and balanced leaders. Today, I hope to demystify the process of hiring a Coach!

Start by identifying your end goal.  Often, people employ an executive coach under their organization’s recommendation. That’s great! This means they see potential in you – and there’s likely a leadership role in your future. However, it’s also a clear indication that there’s something in your leadership that could be improved. To ensure you’re working towards you and your employers’ desired outcome, make sure it is clearly defined.

Next, schedule meet and greets with a handful of potential coaches (there are lots of them and most have their own ways of doing things). To sift through your options, here are 3 questions to ask to help you find the right Executive Leadership Coach for you:

What Engagement Levels do you offer?

Different Leadership Coaches will offer different ways to employ their services. This ranges from hourly to monthly. However, the results will be very different for each…

What is the minimum and maximum amount of time required in order for me to achieve a particular result?

The best Leadership Coaching – and the best bang for your buck – will require a monthly retainer, rather than dollar-for-time. You’re looking for an expert who’s invested 10,000+ hours, developing their own methods and shortcuts to make sure the work sticks. I work with my clients for a minimum of 4-6 months to ensure consistent results.

What are your expectations of what I need to be doing?

You’re hiring a Coach because something needs to change – and change rarely comes easy. So, find out what degree of commitment your potential coach is expecting. Personally, I believe that you get out what you put in and I ask all of my clients to give me 100%!

The #1 Mistake Businesses Need to Avoid

There is no playbook for doing business in a pandemic. People are out of work or simply stuck and home and feeling low. Paychecks are being slashed or are nonexistent – and people are already missing payments. At this rate, it is only going to get worse.

Now, if you are the company looking at this crisis thinking, “Gotta get what’s mine.” You will fail. Being a hostile force and kicking people when they are down will not only damage your customer relationships…it will destroy your reputation and lose your business.

Don’t make this massive mistake! Instead, establish yourself as a partner or friend.

Let me share an anecdote – I missed my tax payment on my house (an honest oversight given everything going on). The county assessor was very understanding and forgiving. They showed empathy. However, Citibank responded by employing imperious language and delivering FINAL WARNINGS. I’ve been a Citibank member for years, and yet, when I make a mistake, they threaten to throw the book at me. Clearly, my loyalty means nothing to them, and this punitive treatment leaves me wanting to take my business elsewhere.

When you turn against your customers, you lose them very quickly. The data shows companies with zero-tolerance for what their customers are going through are getting 93% negative feedback from customers who HATE them now.

However, by putting effort into helping your customers when they need it, by waiving a late fee or interest charge, extending the payment terms, or even forgiving the payment – the numbers flip.

You can gain loyalty and trust by establishing yourself as a valuable partner and friend in difficult times. The benefit of that customer loyalty will far outweigh the cost of forgiveness.

Avoid being a jerk — it’s the biggest business mistake that you can make.

How to Facilitate Difficult Conversations

How to have difficult conversations that can end well? Yes, this is a skill you can learn. Now, more than ever, difficult conversations are everywhere. You and many people around you are full of fear and anxiety, understandably. You–and they–are feeling discomfort and disappointment. You are struggling but trying to do your best to keep a ‘clean mindset’. And yet, everywhere there are others who are also very upset, and hostile conversations are happening.

How can you do a better job in those—since they are so frequent right now? I share my experience and my knowledge about this in the video because there ARE ways to do this right. First, you must accept that your perspective is yours alone. And the person on the other side of that conversation has a different perspective, based on their life and their experiences.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlHA4bKUSukVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Learn How To Have Difficult Conversations | Why Listening Well Is The Key To Avoiding Conflict (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlHA4bKUSuk)

In the video, I help you understand the steps to listening well and how much that can change the nature and the outcome of those potentially nasty discussions. It is worth it to take the time, now, to learn about this so that you are prepared the next time an interaction with someone is starting to get confrontational. You’ll be able to pull back and have that difficult conversation in a manner that will be less stressful, less damaging, and more effective. And, if you recognize that it will work for you, ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ it to help others. Maybe, together, we can ‘turn down the temperature a bit’ in our world and help everyone feel a little less anxious and unsettled.

How Will You Achieve A Healthy Work Life Balance During The Crisis?

Getting Help For Working Moms

The pandemic has affected all sectors of the population, but one particularly hard-hit group is the working moms, who are now facing difficult choices about how best to care for their kids while still bringing in enough money to support their family. This question of finding a decent quality of work-life balance is not going to have an easy solution, and it will be different for everyone. In this video, I ask a simple question: How are mothers handling this crisis?

In a recent study of 550 private and nonprofit organizations, the company Willis Towers Watson found that amongst employers with over 100 employees, less than one third have a plan in place to help women figure out childcare, 50% don’t offer any kind of resources for women, and 66% say that that doesn’t mean they have to adjust their performance expectations for women. With so little regard for working moms, how are they to maintain a healthy quality of work-life balance? There seems to be an expectation that women will be able to handle anything that gets thrown their way. But with employers offering limited or no assistance, and schools reopening in the fall, working mothers are going to have before them a herculean task: figuring out how to do remote working while still being present enough to provide adequate care for their children.

So, with the lack of resources and assistance for working moms, what do you need in order to feel supported? What kind of help would be necessary for you to be able to achieve a healthy quality of work-life balance? Let’s start a discussion. I look forward to hearing from you!
