Rich Versus Poor Mindset and Other Mindset Myths

The Influence of Previous Programming

Whether you realize it or not, your brain has been programmed throughout your life, and much of the programming was set in your early childhood by the people closest to you. These people, usually parents, had a great deal of influence in how you respond to the world around you. They embedded their fears and beliefs into you and because of this, the meaning you prescribe to what you encounter is shaded by the meaning they gave to those things. For instance, a simple example would be, if you were told that being out in the dark is dangerous, then you will likely grow up to be afraid of the dark and expect bad things to happen in dark places. This previous programming is powerful, and you must acknowledge its existence in order to make a shift from a poor to a rich mindset.

Habits of a Poor Mindset

Poor mindset revolves around reacting to the things that happen around you, and allows you to become a victim and live in victimhood. Instead of your being in control, everything happens because of someone or some event–it centers on the blame of others. You didn’t get the promotion because “they” didn’t see your potential– “they” don’t know what they are missing. Everything is always about how you are somehow a victim of circumstances or it’s because other people are being idiots.

This poor mindset becomes a vicious cycle, because no matter what happens that you find as negative, you will find reasons that justify your poor mindset.  You will find a way to prove to yourself that what you are already thinking is true–even if it is completely wrong. Isn’t that ridiculous? You mind goes into overdrive to defend your thought process–even if what you’re thinking is completely idiotic. It takes awareness to overcome this type of poor mindset, and it must be defeated!

Elements of a Rich Mindset

On the other hand, when you have a rich mindset, you view the world around you and your circumstances as something that you have influence over. When something negative happens in your life, you ask yourself what you can do to fix it. You stop focusing on why it happened and you begin to focus on how you can change things. You have faith and an expectation that a higher-power is for you and desires to deliver abundance into your life. You stop listening to the negative programming from the past and the current programming from a 24/7 news cycle that bombards you with all of the things that are terrible happening around you. This takes recognition of the thoughts in your head and the messages you have speaking into your life. Establishing a rich mindset requires a constant check on what you are thinking and how you are choosing to respond to the things that happen around you.

How Do You Change Your Mindset?

So, how do you shift your mindset from poor to rich? It takes an awareness and honest assessment of your previous and current programming. One way to think about it is to imagine that you have a USB port inserted into your mind, and it has been running your whole life, influencing your thoughts and reactions to the world around you. In order to change your mindset, you have to upload a new drive into your mind to override the old programing with a completely new code. This is the only way to get out of a reactionary mindset that places you in a victim role and quiet the assumption that the world is out to get you–because that is not true! When you stop and understand that it is you–your mindset–that is keeping you from achieving your goals, it is time to make the shift. Your old programming is not worth your future success, so you owe it to yourself to shift it to a positive, rich mindset.

At the Growth Architect, we want to help you break through your past programming that is keeping you defeated and in the role of a victim, and we want to provide you with the strategies and tools to shift you into a rich mindset. That’s what we do! If you enjoyed this article, watch my video Change Your Mindset,Change Your Life.

How To Prepare Future Leaders To Adapt To The New Normal

Although we may be beginning to shift from an isolated, COVID-19 environment and back into work, organizations will not simply go back to what was considered “normal.” The past year of uncertainty and change will continue to impact team members in the workplace and will require thoughtful, intentional leadership to guide this transitioning workforce.

Providing Safe Spaces

The past year brought with it an inordinate amount of uncertainty and, for many people–fear. To meet the needs of team members re-entering the work environment, leaders must consider the feelings of their people and create the safe spaces needed to accommodate the emotions they will be bringing back with them. This safe space is not just about physical safety but also about creating a space that provides for mental and emotional safety, as well. It requires a space that allows for expression about new challenges and fears, including the challenges they face with childcare and meeting the demands of helping their children with virtual schooling while juggling work and other responsibilities.

For leaders to effectively navigate these changes, they must engage in conversation about what this safe space comprises and recognize that the unprecedented challenges from the past year did not simply go away. The leaders that emerge effective in this transition will acknowledge that their team members have been through a great deal of stress and find ways to create the safe space needed to encourage open conversations and support.

Creating Transparent Engagement

Throughout this transition to a hybrid approach for organizations, the most significant results have been accomplished by organizations committed to having open, transparent conversations and engagement with their teams. Transparent engagement involves talking about everything, even when the answers may be completely unknown, and the outcomes are just as uncertain. In these unprecedented times, everyone understands that these are uncharted waters and that the leader does not have all of the answers. Still, it is crucial that the members of the organization hear from you–the leader.

In times of uncertainty, the organization members are craving information, and if they do not hear from the leader, they will fill in the blanks from some other source. Stop and think for just a minute, whom would you rather they glean their information from–you or an inaccurate outside source? Your team members will appreciate hearing from you, and in this time of significant change, they understand that you will have to monitor and adjust.

Fostering Diversity of Thought

Diversity of thought on a team teaches the members to view challenges from different vantage points and allows them to see opportunities they may have missed if everyone had similar backgrounds and life experiences. Recent events have shifted diversity of thought from simply a buzzword to part of our new reality that must be promoted and embraced. Throughout this pandemic, female leadership and female-centric leadership attributes have worked quite effectively in this uncertain environment. This past year has also brimmed with social and economic challenges that rose to the forefront with Black and Brown people standing up and saying enough is enough.

With women and minorities dominating many of the changes experienced, it is not enough to place a phrase or a black square on your Instagram. Leaders must find ways to showcase that diversity of thought is a priority and that it is not just symbolized, but that it actually occurs and is a vital piece of the culture. Influential leaders do not seek sameness–they pursue excellence.

Designing an Equitable Workforce

The new normal is bringing about a new business code that centers around designing an equitable workforce. This new code comprises the Men’s Code which has been the traditional business model that revolved around powers of persuasion, winning strategies, physical strength, and generally accomplishing tasks in a man’s kind of way. What this traditional code had been missing is the Women’s Code, which focuses on the female-centric principles of leadership, including community collaboration and empowerment.

The goal is not to have one or the other, but rather to create a new business code that successfully merges the Men’s and Women’s code to achieve a unisex business code. To be successful in this new, emerging hybrid workforce, it will be vital for leaders to design a business code that values an equitable workforce.

What Is A Victim Mindset, and How Can I Stop It?

If you have ever had to deal with someone who lives with a victim mentality, you know how difficult it can be to deal with their view of the world around them. One perplexing problem with the victim mindset is that it’s much easier to notice in other people and much harder to see in ourselves. Sometimes, taking the time to evaluate the way we view our circumstances may reveal that we are harboring some of the toxic characteristics of the victim mindset. One of the tell-tale signs is when you discover yourself finding fault in others yet never seeing it yourself. At this point, it is time to pause and realize that you have begun functioning in a victim mentality–and it’s time to make changes.

Recognize Your Choices

One of the most potent antidotes for living in victimhood is developing self-awareness and a spirit of responsibility–learning to take full responsibility for the things in your life. Stop making excuses. As an adult, it is essential to realize that everything around you is a product of choices that you have made. Does that mean that there are no other factors that have influenced outcomes–no, but it means that you had a choice in the matter as well. No one forced you into your job; no one chose your partner; no one made you have children–regardless of the situation, these are all products of choices you have made. This can be an incredibly liberating thought for many, while for others, it can cause an angry, defensive response. You are not responsible for how other people act or the choices they have made–but you are entirely responsible for the choices that put you where you are. It is impossible to move forward from a victim mentality if you refuse to own your decision-making.

Stop the Blame–Begin the Change

Unfortunately, difficult situations are part of life. These challenges actually create growth opportunities, and sometimes you have to remind yourself that you only know enough to get to a certain point, and when you want to do more–become more–you have to make a shift. Suppose you want to grow and go further than the wall you seem to hit continually. In that case, it requires you to evaluate your current situation, be consciously aware of the decision-making on your part, and then find areas to change. In order to get to the place you want to be, something has to change. And if you are blaming anyone else for your current situation, then you have to shift from that victim mentality to reach past where you currently are; the only way to get there is change.

Change is a non-negotiable requirement for you to get to a different point in the future. This requires you to stop looking for the problem and begin searching for the opportunities presented as gifts from the challenges you face. Stop thinking, “poor me, there must be some conspiracy against me,” and start seeing the problems as a chance to grow and look for the reasons you need these lessons–how could this problem be shaping and preparing me for the future?

Change Your Perceptions

When you come to a place where you can shift your circumstances from blame to personal responsibility, then you will be on your way to overcoming the trap of the victim mentality. I encourage you to take an honest look at your mindset and make the necessary shifts in perception to move forward. No matter your goals, if others are finding ways to accomplish them–losing weight, making more money, signing more clients–then it means it is possible. If it is possible for them, then it is just as possible for it to occur in your life. So, what are you doing to reach your ultimate goals? If you are not where you want to be, you have two options–make excuses and blame others, or take responsibility and make changes. You can view the world as an unfriendly place with people out to get you, or you can choose to see it as a great place to be where the sky’s the limit. The perception you choose to embrace will shape your reality–choose wisely.

At the Growth Architect, we want to help you break through the victim mindset that is keeping you defeated and provide you with the strategies and tools to shift you into a positive mindset that puts you back in control of your outcomes. Overcoming Resistance

One of the most impactful skills to learn that will automatically drive you toward success is knowing how to recognize resistance and overcome it. It is inevitable that you will encounter resistance in all facets of your life, but the one type of resistance you need to laser focus on and eradicate is the kind you can control–resistance that you create!

Recognize Inner Resistance

You have set a goal–something that you know you absolutely need to do to take your business to the next level, and you just stop or talk yourself out of it. That is resistance, and you will find that you usually have “good reasons” for why you just quit. Often, resistance shows up disguised as other tasks you need to accomplish. Maybe you had some emails to return, or you thought of a phone call you needed to make or any other excuse you can come up with for not doing what you know needs to be done. THAT is inner resistance! It is YOU creating a reason for not doing what you said you were going to do–not doing what you know needs to be done.

Stop Basing Actions of Feelings

Another way self-created resistance shows up is in the form of feelings. To me, this is the funniest one–the excuse of–I don’t feel like it. What? Since when did feeling like doing something determine if something gets accomplished or not? When you were in school or your first job, did you get to decide what you felt like doing? Of course not! So why would you decrease your chances of success at this point in your life–your career–by taking actions based solely on feelings?

If you think you will magically wake up one morning excited about doing something you are not particularly interested in doing, I have bad news. It’s never going to happen because it is not a habit in your life yet. The resistance shows up when you make a commitment, or you set a goal to achieve something that you haven’t achieved–it will always show up. You have to take the initiative to push through those feelings and keep moving forward.

Reprogram Status Quo

The reason that resistance always shows up is that it is part of your lifetime of programming designed to keep you at the status quo. Why? Because the status quo is always safe. No matter how much you dislike where you are, no matter how broken it is, no matter how much you crave walking away from the status quo, it is hardwired into your subconscious to keep you exactly where you are because it represents safety.

Every action you take has to be with an intentional commitment to overcome that internal, built-in resistance whose job it is to keep you where you are. If you genuinely desire to break through to a different level, then it is vital that you make choices and overcome the resistance. The resistance, in most cases, is bullshit. You are not too old; you are not too young; you are smart enough–you have to get over these paralyzing thoughts because these thoughts just keep you from taking the next steps.

Be Truthful with Yourself

If you want to stop the self-defeating practice of resistance, you must conduct a truthful assessment of your mindset. Take an honest account of the programming that has been running in your mind and keeping you from stepping out and making the changes you need to make. Most of the answers you will discover are lies and completely untrue–they are complete bullshit. You owe it to yourself to know what is holding you back, and not lie to yourself about why you are not overcoming the resistance!

Take Action

When you arrive at this truth, it is time to take action. Whatever you have been resisting, take a bold move in the direction of overcoming it. Do not allow that fear–that resistance–that old programming designed to keep you where you are to stifle your commitment to the next step.

Because if you don’t change anything–that point you want to reach is always at a distant part in the future. That’s what the resistance is designed to do–it is designed to keep pushing that point out further and further and further until you give up. Once the resistance is overcome and you take decisive action, then everything starts to fall into motion. That is how you overcome resistance by the conscious effort and recognition of what resistance is and by finding the courage to push through it.

My job as a strategist is to help you understand how your mindset, growth, and business strategies work together. That’s what I do! If you want coaching or more support in the area of overcoming resistance and making bold moves toward your professional goals, then join me at The Growth Architect

How Can Employers Survive the Great Resignation?

Since the pandemic began, organizations all over the map are dealing with astronomical numbers in lack of engagement, low retention, and workers simply quitting their jobs. This new phenomenon has left many leaders scratching their heads and trying to assess what can be done to get their companies back to normal and fix this new personnel problem, unlike anything modern culture has faced.

What Is Causing the Exodus?

When the shutdowns began, many companies took advantage of the opportunity to make drastic cuts to their budgets. One of the quickest ways to make radical changes to the bottom line is by cutting the most expensive workers–the over 50 crowd, and that’s precisely what they did. With these employees gone, the budget problem was solved, but it created a new issue. Although removing these workers saved a chunk of payroll, the companies also lost the most knowledgeable people in their industries. But most companies were not worried–they assumed that they would entice young, fresh talent with incentives and “Freebie Fridays” and just like that–new, energetic workers would fill the office. But the pandemic changed things, and leaders now realize that recruiting and retaining their people looks extremely different in the new normal.

The Comforts of Home

The pandemic brought with it the new reality of working from home, an option that had rarely before been available to employees. Unlike the past, where people lacked the tools needed to work from home, everyone was equipped with every device required to be successful, which allowed companies to avoid the dip in productivity that many had predicted. With productivity in full swing, many workers realized that they preferred this new way of working rather than going to the office. For the first time, they found time to enjoy their families, stopped wasting time stuck in traffic, and actually got the chance to tuck their children into bed at night. Why would they ever want to return to the office? Herein lies the first problem–companies that want people to go back to the office are having a hard time because many will quit if required to return.

Cost of Living Reductions

Working from home also had another consequence; people migrated away from big, unaffordable cities like Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and found more affordable places to live. These moves resulted in having much larger homes for much less money. Suddenly, families realized that with the cost of living so much lower, they could live the lifestyle they enjoy on only one salary. Now, one person could work, and the other is free to focus on the family or perhaps work a part-time job. This has contributed to the resignation issue because businesses are now losing employees who will potentially be out of the workforce for a long time.

Need for Connection

When the more experienced workers lost their jobs to make a significant dent in the payroll, these companies hired many Gen Z employees. One common attribute of this generation of workers is their intense desire to be tied into a mission and vision. They have a sincere desire to believe in what a company stands for and connect to the organization. When they sense problems or feel disconnected, then they have no problem moving on. It is pretty difficult to keep a Gen Z employee when they sense issues in the culture because they have no trouble quitting a job they are uncomfortable with.

Building a Dream

Shutdowns also unleashed the entrepreneurial spirit in many people. Many entry-level workers could survive on unemployment and government stipends, and they used that time to advance themselves or research the dream of running their own business. This time away from their jobs with income still coming in has resulted in the largest ever number of new businesses being built. It is unlikely that these workers will reenter the workforce doing what they did before the pandemic.

How Can Your Business Weather This Storm? People Matter–Spreadsheets Lie

If you are an employer, in the short term, you will face a multitude of challenges that will require you to focus on what really matters. You may have been trained to measure all success from a spreadsheet; now is the time to realize that is a lie. The only thing that ever has mattered and ever will matter is the people doing the work. The minute you stop focusing on the people in your organization and begin focusing solely on the bottom line, you will struggle to make it. People do not do business with a business–they do business with a person, and so many leaders have forgotten this rule and have tried to make people replaceable, and they are not. The new workers we have in place today will never buy into a business that operates that way. The generation that believed people are replaceable were pushed out of this workforce by many of these exact leaders. Now, they are learning the hard way that the people matter the most.

Get to Know What Your People Want

If leaders want to retain and attract talent in this new work environment, they will have to make a conscious effort to make people feel connected and cared for. Organizations can’t achieve this with gimmicks like “Freebie Fridays” because these workers have something much more compelling to compare it to–they have been home and tasted what it feels like to live a much fuller life. They want that balance and to have time to spend with their families and friends. The only chance you have to keep them is through a genuine desire to understand what they need. This can’t be assumed; you have to ask them what they want and find a way to meet their needs. Leaders that are not willing to reach out and create an environment where people feel valued and heard will struggle to make it through this new resignation season.

At the Growth Architect, we want to provide you with the tools and techniques to help you navigate the challenges of this great resignation. As a strategist, I want to help you create a plan for attracting and retaining talent in this challenging time. The Importance of Self Care

Balance and self-care are popular terms these days, but what do they really mean?

It’s easy to feel strung out and overwhelmed lately – but if you’re taking care of yourself then it’s easier to mitigate those feelings. Start by asking yourself: Am I eating right? Am I sleeping enough? Am I drinking too much or watching too much TV? Am I finding time to consciously decompress?

If you’re not satisfied with any of your answers to those questions then here’s what you need to do to get balance back.

First, make a list of all of the habits in your life that you could change for the better. Maybe you drink a little too much too often, or maybe you’re always scrolling on your phone late into the night. Whatever it may be, recognize the things in your life that are keeping you from being healthy and focused and start mindfully cutting back on them.

Then, think about what good habits you would like to develop and add more of the healthy habits that you enjoy. Hiking, playing a musical instrument, or doing yoga could all be activities that you already enjoy and that you can use as a way to treat yourself.

Now you can start replacing negative habits with positive ones. The trick is to be intentional. Maybe watching television really is a great way for you to unwind and recharge. In that case, be conscious about the fact that you’re watching in order to relax and take care of yourself. Doing an activity mindlessly does not make it rejuvenating – it makes it a distraction. But any activity, when done right, can be used to achieve more balanced living. Just be aware of why you’re doing it!

Remember, don’t try to change all the bad habits at once. Begin by choosing one of the negative habits you listed and replace that habit with something better for you that enjoy doing. For example, if you watch a lot of television, you could decide to go for a walk or read a book instead of picking up the remote.

Take advantage of my balance planning tool at balance.tips and in just 10 minutes you can build a schedule that incorporates with self-care into your busy life. Take care of yourself and I guarantee you’ll start feeling more healthy, productive and motivated in no time.

Let’s grow!

How Can You Let Others See Your FULL POTENTIAL?

If you have ever wanted to uplevel, get a better job title, and make more money, now is the time. For the first time in ages, employees have the upper hand in the job market. The only problem is that with a turnover rate in companies of around 40%–everyone else is vying to make the same moves, so you must discover how to display your potential and your brilliance. If you are tired of being overlooked and passed over for great opportunities, then it is time for you to learn the art of getting others to recognize your greatness without feeling arrogant or pretending to be something you are not.

Find Your Voice

The first step in displaying your potential is learning to speak up and tell others about what you do well. It may seem forward, but this is precisely what C-level executives want to hear. Your leaders want you to walk into their office, clearly articulate what you want, what you can accomplish, and then allow them to react to your requests. If you are waiting for your supervisor to walk through your door, tell you that you are awesome, and that they want to give you a promotion and more money, then you are going to keep waiting because the odds of that ever happening are extremely low. It’s not because you are not doing a great job, but because they are busy with their own careers, families, and managing through all of this tremendous change–and they simply do not have time to notice everything you do. Especially in a hybrid work environment, it is pivotal that you learn how to stand out and use your voice for what you do and what you want.

Own Your Greatness

If you fail to see your full potential, you must begin focusing on what I like to call the “inside work.” Becoming confident in who you are and what you do means practicing the mindset necessary to appreciate your potential. It is imperative that you get into the mindset that you deserve to be seen for who you are and who you are growing into. When you begin to own your greatness, it takes the awkwardness away when telling others about who you are and where your brilliance lies. The odd feeling that you are bragging or arrogant will begin to fade when you truly believe that you are valuable and that others need what you have to offer.

Stop Defending. Start Articulating

Investing in the inner work is vital in articulating your value because there cannot be a discrepancy between what your inner voice tells you and what you say. When you speak up and say to a decision-maker that you deserve a raise or a promotion, be prepared, they are going to ask you why. At that point, you must be able to articulate your value to the company, what you bring to the table, how they can rely on you, and how you make their life better. That is the message you should be prepared to articulate, and it needs to feel like a natural conversation.

When the inner work is not complete, and your mindset is not right–the simple question of “Why?” can easily place you on the defensive and begin a spindown of all of your old programming that tells you to justify your right to be there. The bold you that walked in to ask for what you want can quickly turn into an insecure mess that begins to ask questions, “I can’t believe you’re asking me this? Have I not proven myself? Why are you questioning my work? Have I done something wrong?” To keep this nasty wave of defensiveness from sweeping over everything, you must go into the situation prepped with the proper mindset work, knowing your value, and confident in your ability to articulate your what and why.

Simple Ways to Crack The Productivity Code

Most people find it almost impossible to stay at their desks all day and be productive, and there are a couple of reasons why. For one, your brain is wired to need some type of distraction after periods of intense focus–a break from the activity. Another reason you may get off task is because of the way your subconscious has programmed your mindset. This old programming is set to keep you comfortable–to keep you exactly where you have always been–and it boycotts you from making any advances in your life or your career. If you want to be more productive than you typically are, and you want to take your business, your personal life to a totally different level, you have to change some habits. And when you do that, it will increase your ability to be productive because if you want to do more, if you’re going to be more successful, you have to make changes to the way you operate. You have to program your brain and your mindset for productivity.

Productivity Defined

So, what exactly do I mean when I use the word productivity? I define productivity as what your output is in a particular amount of time. Sitting at your desk does not make you productive. You are productive when you have your to-do list, your action items, and you start going through them and crossing them off the list, one by one–then you are productive. Simply sitting in the office or at that desk is not being productive–accomplishing tasks is when you reach productivity.

Get Unplugged

To really create a productive work environment, you have to get somewhat unplugged. You do not literally have to turn everything off, but you MUST turn off all notifications that come through your phone or computer. This is of such importance because those rings, dings, and pop-ups serve to distract you from the task at hand. When you become distracted, it takes the typical person 20 minutes to get back to highly focused work. Those 20 minutes that you lost in distraction could have been spent later on something useful, like a walk to rest your brain. All emails and social media need a set time to be checked.

You can either allow notifications to dictate your time and take you off task, or you can have a plan for when to address them and take control of your productivity.

Set Your Timer

If you want to become uber-productive, you must control your time and schedule everything. When you sit down to accomplish a task, give yourself a particular amount of time to work and stay within that time frame. If the job needs two hours, then set a timer to go off every 30 minutes and take a 5 to 10-minute brain break away from the task. During this time, you can get up and walk around, make a phone call, check the email and social media notifications that came through, have coffee–do whatever you need to do away from the task–then come right back to it.

To take charge of your clock and your calendar, make sure you schedule everything you can schedule–workouts, time-off–everything possible. This helps your brain prepare for the workload and gives you the motivation needed to complete intense tasks. If you want to know more about scheduling time, I have a video dedicated to this step alone; check it out.

Own Your Mindset

Productivity is a mindset; it takes inner work, and this intentionality to mindset is critical to your success–it has to take place every single day. One way to accomplish this is to listen to mindset training or podcasts on mindfulness. You can do this when you are getting ready, driving to work, walking, or exercising–make it part of your day. By becoming disciplined to your inner mindset, you continue to move forward and remind yourself that to be super productive, there has to be an alignment of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Happiness is what makes you the most productive because when you’re happy, work seems to fly right off the desk–it appears easy–and you begin to enjoy that feeling of accomplishment.

Career Focus Hack: How to Stay Focused

One of the most important habits that will lead to increased productivity is learning to practice the art of time management. So often, entrepreneurs, business owners, and busy professionals struggle with time management and effectively mapping out their entire day. They seem to be lacking a plan to know what they are going to do, when it will happen, and how they will accomplish it. My number one tip to fuel productivity revolves around creating timed segments and staying disciplined.

Create Timed Productivity Segments

When a schedule looks overwhelming, our brains’ natural response is to try to escape and seek some reprieve. Knowing that a schedule full of hour-after-hour tasks tends to create a sense of overload, it is crucial to find a way to segment the work to create motivation to complete tasks and not find a reason to run away from them.

A powerful tool that will assist you in becoming the execution machine you desire to be is to begin segmenting tasks into 30-minute work intervals. Set a timer and work for 30 straight minutes–focused entirely on the task at hand. This short increment of time is long enough to spend quality time focused on one specific task but short enough to keep your brain from becoming overwhelmed with the amount of work. The timer also keeps distractions at bay because the timer gives you permission to leave the task and take a scheduled break.

Be Disciplined to the Task

As with most things in life, the trick to the 30-minute productivity hack requires discipline. During this time, you cannot check your email; you cannot read the newspaper; you cannot shop online–all you can allow yourself to do is stay focused on the task. By implementing these short work periods with breaks every 30 minutes, you allow your brain to focus on a task completely, and you learn to resist the temptation to veer from the work. When the timer goes off–do what you need to do, and then set the timer and get started for another 30-minute segment.

One great way to spend your short break is by practicing active relaxation methods that prepare you mentally and physically to get back to work. By setting realistic time expectations, you set your brain up for success. Instead of forcing work, you are suddenly motivating yourself for outstanding results. This is why it is my number one productivity tool on how to get things accomplished.

Which Business Certifications Should I Get – Are Minority Certifications Worth It?

As an entrepreneur, it is critical to learn how to successfully scale your business to new heights. Often, this serves as a challenge for many females and minority small business owners that don’t have a strategy in place to do so. One step in your plan that can amplify your results is seeking out and obtaining specialized business certifications.

Set Yourself Apart

One of the most important reasons to secure specialized and minority certifications is because it has the ability to set you apart. Therefore, I recommend that anyone– Women, Veterans, African Americans, LGBTQ, or whatever minority group classification you may identify with–find what is out there and get certified. The reason this is so important is because it allows you to find specific audiences and can help you access corporations by giving you a backdoor entrance into working with their organizations.

Make Yourself Easy to Find

By securing minority certifications, you make your business much easier to find. Many municipalities, governments and cities, and large corporations want to do business with specific minority groups–especially females–but they can’t find them. Often, they indicate that there is a shortage of companies that fall into a particular minority category. What is the answer? Make yourself easy to find by getting your certification! Many of these entities have money set aside to work specifically with a particular minority group, but they do not receive proposals from businesses with certifications specific to the category they are searching for. The best way to keep this from happening is to obtain a certification that indicates who you are.

Shift Your Mindset

Receiving a certification that identifies your specific group and letting others know you are a minority-certified business in no way indicates asking for help or shows a sign of weakness. You must shift from that mindset. By seeking out these certifications, you are not asking to be considered for something you are not qualified for; you are simply finding a new way to the table. When you realize the benefit that these certifications bring to your business and how they broaden your prospects, you can appreciate the value they bring not only to your business but to others seeking what you have to offer.

At the Growth Architect, we want to help you develop a strategy to advance your business and give you the tools to help make your vision happen. If you want to know more about minority certifications and the value they hold, then watch my interview on The Atlanta Small Business Show.
